Q: Sales Tax: Is it charged per item or per transaction?

Jacob ValentaThe question says it all. I am a programmer and don't have very much experience with tax and accounting. I ask because if I charge tax per item, and have to round to the next cent, the ending tax total could be off. What if some of my items are not taxable? Such as food?

I wanted to comment on this, but didn't want the thread to go on any longer, so I'll do it here
I'm a programmer for a major retailer and one of my primary areas is sales tax. It's ridiculously complicated as littleadv points out
It's also exceedingly prone to change.
Most major retailers purchase a package that calculates sales tax and gets automatic updates.
