@MichaelT I don't necessarily disagree, but it is a useful artifact to know languages with an overarching stability if for no other reason than studying the effects that has had on them
that's ignoring the usefulness of knowing such a language existed in the event a use came up

@Dynamic Since sometime mid-november

4:53 PM
@Rachel Really? I didn't think he was one of the more well-known members who removed their account...
That stinks.

@Dynamic you may find more details here: plus.google.com/u/0/107485877062152067451/posts/jQzpvHwYQVE
"...I feel I played it out to death on the various metas over the past few months that it's become uninteresting and simply amounts to me not enjoying my time on Stack Exchange anymore. I have mentioned it elsewhere on other social networks, so I will say that a large part of my lack of enjoyment derives from the institutionalized moderator program Stack Exchange has"

@Dynamic Yep. Its in the starred rss feed still.

Mark Trapp is gone? :(

5:12 PM
@gnat Just got done reading that... man.
That was the week I was on vacation... didn't notice that.

regarding mod program, here's one of his last posts at MSO...

A: Handling Calls to Remove a Moderator

user149432While it's no secret I'm very much in favor of periodic elections1, others have already voiced that position here so I'll offer something different: the ability to escalate an issue to Stack Exchange, Inc. for arbitration. Having some experience in the capacity of being a moderator, particularly...

5:30 PM
I really am curious why he left though... he was such an active member on many of the sites. I wish he had gone into more detail about what made him start deleting his accounts

Ha! I didn't even notice he was gone. Looks like he picked up his toys and went home.

@Rachel given his mention of "played it out to death on the various metas over the past few months" and this answer, it's likely he wanted moderators to be re-electable instead of what we have now

On a related note, I still miss @Pierre303.

@gnat I suppose that's possible, but I didn't think that would be a big enough reason to leave the sites entirely

...that is to have limited term service after which they would have to apply for elections if they wanted to continue

5:37 PM
@gnat That's his opinion of course, and I agree with it to an extent, but I don't believe that's any reason to leave.
@Rachel I completely agree.

@Rachel note: "large part of my lack of enjoyment derives from the institutionalized moderator program Stack Exchange has"

@gnat I still don't understand that...
When I first started using the site, it seemed like he agreed with the moderation.

6:01 PM
@Dynamic "past few months" suggests that things changed some time later after you started (your profile says "member for 1 year, 4 months")
for the record, I am not pretending to understand, just carefully reading what he wrote
and trying to draw conclusions based on that

6:25 PM
@gnat I understand, but nothing changed about the rules of moderation during that time as far as I know.

7:20 PM
@Dynamic agree; I didn't notice substantial changes either. This makes it most likely that something changed in his attitude towards these; you know as time goes by our understanding and point of view can change....
...we may change our mind; what we thought is good in the past may feel bad later

Human beings are not stateless entities, we recurse over a continuous set of stochastic quantum expressions, unpacking and repacking abstractions until some meaning results. The meaning itself, however, is volatile and unsafe and should be isolated in a monad for good measure...then occasionally poked with a stick just to see what happens.

10:17 PM
Is that supposed to be some kind of type theorists poetry or something?
or are you merely suggest we go around poking people with broom sticks?

user20683
@JimmyHoffa I suggested we poke meanings with sticks

user20683
and honestly I've no idea

user20683
I've a humanities degree, I've got enough post-modernism running through my brain to be able to sound profound but be full of drivel.

user20683
so who knows

user20683
meaning is what you make it

user20683
10:19 PM
or how you poke it

user20683
also I've been reading this

user20683
I think my brain might ooze out my ears

He has an interesting picture of state in his local state is evil but I think it's totally and completely misguided
He's complaining he had trouble implementing a language with local state that could go beyond the bounds of well..the local... in a performant way because he had to recompose it repeatedly, though this is a problem that has been solved by pure languages already which intelligently cache and share values in their implementation though not allowing the developer to do so
Not saying it's easy to implement the solution; I sure as hell couldn't do it, but it has been solved and there is a solution is all I'm saying
and his idea of a stateful substrate that we all live upon blindly ignores transactionality of global state that becomes ever important in our current multi-core distributed-programming models
he'd be trading one performance nightmare (purism's effects on the lifetime of local scope) for another (transaction queues for everything)

user20683
@JimmyHoffa does that make us Nightmare Merchants?

@WorldEngineer There is a spoken human language that does not contain recursion. One can't say "My brother's wife's sister" to an arbitrary depth in that language. So, not all humans are recursive.

user20683
@MichaelT whether Piraha lacks recursion is disputed

user20683
their language can also apparently be whistled

I guess people with cleft lips are considered mute then

user20683
can be != always

user20683
also there's only around 400 speakers of said language

user55340
10:43 PM
Have you looked into more recent investigations in to the Sapir-Worf hypothesis?

psr
@WorldEngineer - That did not sound profound.

11:15 PM
Tapir-Wolf hypothesis.. the hypothesis that left together in the same room for a while, the wolf would eat the tapir

user55340
Does Your Language Shape How You Think? by NYTimes. Its an interesting read (assuming you still have articles left before hitting the paywall)

Your hypothesis is cool and all, but mine would get way more views on youtube

user55340
11:34 PM
@JimmyHoffa I counter with the "cute cats do stupid things" hypothesis.

11:47 PM
I withdrawal my hypothesis.
@WorldEngineer if you want to read some blogs that brood on about high level stuff without sounding mostly like brain effing nonsense and being practical, might I suggest james-iry.blogspot.com/2009/08/… good article, really helped me out a while back in conceptualizing some things I was running into, plus the guys entire blog is actually really good (if terribly inactive)
