I didn't vote to close this question, but it doesn't look very suitable for Stack Overflow in my opinion. It looks very theoretical. Stack Overflow is about practical programming problems. I appreciate the feedback and don't disagree. It's hard for me to think of how to get at the core of what I'm asking while breaking down the scope, though. For example, I could keep the code example, but ask, "Will this cause problems with debugging down the road?"

I don't *think* "Does the code run?" is supposed to be the gold standard of a solution on SO, but it seems hard to frame this as a topic worth thinking about.
