I have asked a question that I thought was a nomenclature question, but it's attracting some extremely quick downvotes. Is there a better place to ask about terminology? Is it off-topic?

@detly Naming-related questions are very difficult. You have clearly put a lot of effort into the question, but that doesn't mean it is answerable. This site had a lot of discussion about whether naming questions are on topic. In short: it's complicated and there is no strong consensus.
