Is "What's it called when..." an on-topic question for this SE? I'm vaguely aware that it's a code smell to have a line which accesses several layers deep of members of members of an object but can't think what principles this specifically contravenes...

@amon Thanks - that fits the bill. I'd come across this as principle of least knowledge, and it's a good enough "law" to justify the choices I'm making in this particular case
