So your question is more about a library conception issue rather than a programming one? If so you might be better off going on a sister site such as softwareengineering.stackexchange.com, see their FAQ and our help center. FWIW, I do think that the event should be triggered ― Why would you care where the "selection" action is coming from? It happened. — Paul Stenne 55 secs ago

Is "What's it called when..." an on-topic question for this SE? I'm vaguely aware that it's a code smell to have a line which accesses several layers deep of members of members of an object but can't think what principles this specifically contravenes...

@Will No, such single-word requests are not considered on-topic on Software Engineering.SE
So thank you for asking here first!
You are probably thinking of the “Law of Demeter”

Here's a question on softwareengineering.stackexchange.com about having separate constructors for unit testing. softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/385804/…Scott Hannen 37 secs ago

Althoug LoD is less about deep accesses (“number of dots”) and more about the total API surface of some class.

@amon Thanks - that fits the bill. I'd come across this as principle of least knowledge, and it's a good enough "law" to justify the choices I'm making in this particular case

Sorry, but Stackoverflow is dedicated to helping programmers solve their programming code problem. This looks like a configuration issue. It would be more appropriate on unix.stackexchange.com . Please post there and then delete this version. Please read Help On-topic and Help How-to-ask before posting more Qs here. Good luck. — shellter 48 secs ago
