Giving your ♦ the benefit of the doubt, I guess I must be missing something that explains why this question isn't entirely too broad. Did you read the C# specification? The behavior is intentional and not obscure at all. There are many examples of "practical utility", far too many to describe in a Stack Overflow answer. The basic language design philosophy behind this is that each constructed generic type is in fact a completely different type; so static members exist uniquely for each constructed generic type, just as they would for any other separate and unique type. — Peter Duniho 45 mins ago
Hoo, boy.

This question might be on topic for Programmers Stack Exchange as a "software architecture and design" question... although I think it would still require a tighter focus, even on Programmers. There are way too many questions in this post for a single Stack Exchange question. — Kevin J. Chase 45 secs ago

anyone on?
So string is a class
I heard somewhere that if we make a variable using string
then that variable will be an object, and we can call methods on it, unlike primitive data types
in java
is that right?

String is the class java.lang.String you can find its documentation at: docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/java/lang/String.html

@RobertHarvey @ThomasOwens I just figured that current grammar we propose for not-about section of help center makes it rather hard to plug it in after words "not about...". Can we maybe somehow rephrase to the same meaning but in a way that would more naturally look when written after "not about..."?

@gnat Ideally, I'd like to move all of that stuff to the /help/dont-ask page. I want /help/on-topic to only be about things that you can ask here. It's not mod-editable, but we can ask the CMs to put it there. We're going on the assumption that people probably aren't going to read that far down the help/on-topic page anyway, so breaking it up makes the pages smaller and more logical.

10:27 AM
@ThomasOwens I see, that makes sense. What's your take on how to approach that "not about" section in help/on-topic page? Do we plan to ask SE to just remove that section from our page (this will likely require some dev effort), or do we make some text to put it there?

11:08 AM
@gnat The /help/on-topic is mod editable. It just won't be there.
Of course, if SE can't or won't add it to dont-ask, it will have to go somewhere.

11:35 AM
@ThomasOwens oh I see now! so the plan is like this, if SE agrees to edit help/don't ask we put these statements there, there will be no need to change their current wording in this case (and we will remove "not about" from help/on-topic). If they don't then we tweak the wording a little and put them in "not about". Or maybe remove or rephrase the "not about" to match, since it is mod editable

@gnat The not about is going to be somewhere, it's just a matter of where. The only thing I want to make sure of is that it isn't too verbose.

@ThomasOwens understood. Wrt verbosity I think in current form it's okay. Robert put quite a lot effort into making it as brief as possible

@RobertHarvey how did I find the linked SO question? I think I just googled "c# static generic class constructor" or something like it.

looking for help of 10Kers or moderators to undelete this question I voted it down by mistake and I guess asker removed it because of that. (I added minor edit to unlock my vote after deletion)

Oh 10K, I was wondering the reason of getting 404
Hi everyone btw \o

@gnat Done.

@ThomasOwens thanks! hope not to bother you with requests like that frequently, I think I didn't vote by mistake for at least a year, probably more than that :)

No worries. I just happened to see the message.

So I constructed and tested an XPath query, and it returns as expected on the tester, but not when I actually execute the code. I am so confused by this.

2:21 PM
OK, so I am not understanding the lifecycle of the code I'm working right now.
I think.
Because I think I'm not getting the ids when I execute the code because the ids don't show up until the element is bound. So I don't know how to or if I can do that.

2:44 PM
@KitZ.Fox Is this about HTML Agility Pack?

Yes.
I hadn't gotten that far in my thinking yet. There is a set of elements that is bound and that can be toggled when viewing the page.
I'm not sure how to write a test to compare those elements.

Do you have an URL?

HTML Agility Pack is working great as a solution for comparing all the other elements though.

Comparing?

Yes. I'm comparing between the QA page and the Dev page.

2:48 PM
Oh, I see.

sometimes I am such a derp.

Everyone has derp moments.

I was examining the objects from the page that doesn't have those elements and wondering why the objects were null.
Why can't code just read my mind?

Maybe a better question for ProgrammersMrFlick 17 secs ago

That's a legit question. Thanks, Duga.

you were given a very misleading advice at Stack Overflow, sorry about that — gnat 5 mins ago
^^^ typo there - should read "why did you choose to ignore two consequent comments that warned about question being poor fit for Programmers"

4:41 PM
OK, I'm doing something wrong. I created a class and it's telling me I can't access it due to its protection level.
but it's public.
oh ffs, of course I have to set the attributes as well.

Adi
how can i know how many compartments my CPU has?
\

I don't know what you mean.

Adi
CPUs have compartments right?
diff. compartments for doing diff. processes

you mean threads or cores?

Adi
and a GPU has a LOT of mini compartments all dedicated to rendering graphics
yes threads
the ability to do diff. things at once

4:46 PM
You can see how many threads you have going by using task manager.
It's under performance.

Adi
inter(R)core

Is that what you meant?

Adi
yes
in the control panel?

Right-click the task bar, select task manager.

yea
wats up time?

4:49 PM
the opposite of down time

Adi
wats down time?

up time ~ how long your computer has been on and not hibernating.
I think sleep counts in the total, but I'm not sure.

Adi
mine is 6days but i switched it off 3 hrs ago

Was it off or sleeping?

Adi
wats diff. between sleep and st down?
off shut down

4:50 PM
Or you just turned off the monitors?
Then I don't know.

Adi
shut down

Weird. Pretty sure it's a measure since boot.
oh, hmm, but as I say that, hibernate wouldn't be a boot event. I don't think.
Maybe you just hibernated it.

Adi
wats hybernation?
also, does project name have to equal the main public class name in a java program??

Hibernation shuts down more stuff than sleep. I don't remember about Java naming.

Adi
5:08 PM
oh k bai

5:51 PM
OK, here's the thing. I can grab all the elements (using HtmlAgilityPack) except for the pricing. I think it's because the pricing display is bound late and can be toggled by a control, but I'm not sure if that's right. If it is, I'm not sure how to figure out how to cycle through the option to get the elements.
Dev says that part is Knockout.

It would seem that some people just have trouble finding the documentation.
