once she graduated from intern, she basically had FNC, CNN, and one other media company poach her back and forth for the next 5 years as a producer
finally Glenn Beck poached her to move to dallas and I don't know what she makes but I'm sure it's north of half a million

A: How to run 32-bit app in Ubuntu 64-bit?

MiphixYou also have to remember that the i686 architecture wasn't a Sandy Bridge type of design as you may have now. The true difference is the fact the more recent 64-bit architectures now lack a northbridge and the processor now handles the tasks that would typically be handled by the northbridge. T...

positioning yourself to be the target of a bidding war is a good thing, amirite?
most people don't want to go through that trouble, and our industry is what it is as a result.

@LightnessRacesinOrbit I like the last bit
> Your i386 program has 32 dudes on a bus that carries 64. The bus driver then says to you and every one aboard, that's not fair to the other 32 bits, and I'm not going anywhere! Then promptly starts eating his lunch.

no, the "I'll get paid what I'm worth automatically (won't I? please?)" problem causes that @durron597

why do I get the stars for @LightnessRacesinOrbit's post

9:04 PM
@enderland imposter syndrome FTL

user55340
I got a 20k pay raise moving to the public sector.

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit That answer is comically incorrect. I never thought to describe a computer bus by saying "imagine 32 dudes on a bus, but your computer requires 64 dudes..."

@durron597 I have that so bad. :(

@MichaelT s/the public sector/a higher cost of living area/

user55340
@durron597 same fo all the state.

user55340
9:06 PM
And I moved within the state.

@MichaelT the cost of living is the same in Eau Claire than Madison? Really? (your profile says where you live)

user55340
No, the pay for the civil servant grade I am in is the same if I work in any part of the state.

public employee salaries FTW!

user55340
And there are techs in this grade who work 15 miles from where I used to live.

@MichaelT Your former employer was not public sector.

user55340
9:08 PM
Not a job I want there though.

user55340
The cost of living alone would only be a 7k-10k raise.

user55340
And that says nothing about vacation and benefits.

user55340

@MichaelT It just sounds like Employer^ was crap, that's all.

user55340
Small company. I'm fairly sure you know how that goes.

9:18 PM
@MichaelT Now whatever gave you that idea?

user55340
There was one other Java coder, two JavaScript guys (one fresh out of college) and a python guy.

user55340
(JavaScript and front end... The python was for system duct tape between us and our partner/vendors)

user55340
@durron597 btw, Madison is 75 square miles... And then adjacent cities which identify as Madisonish.

user114359
There are few things more satisfying on this site than casting the 5th vote on a terribad question.

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Everyone talks about how peaceful Europe is compared to the USA with firearms pretty much banned, so bad guys just casually carve people up with swords instead :-(

user55340
@LightnessRacesinOrbit reddit.com/r/nottheonion

@Snowman they do it remarkably infrequently, though
@Snowman FFS AUTOPLAY VIDEO
and that cheesy over-excited intro lol
the US is like a tween I swear

user55340

Curse of the Colonel (カーネルサンダースの呪い, Kāneru Sandāsu no Noroi) refers to an urban legend regarding a reputed curse placed on the Japanese Kansai-based Hanshin Tigers baseball team by deceased KFC founder and mascot Colonel Harland Sanders. The curse was said to be placed on the team because of the Colonel's anger over treatment of one of his store-front statues, which was thrown into the Dōtonbori River by celebrating Hanshin fans following their team's victory in the 1985 Japan Championship Series. As is common with sports-related curses, the Curse of the Colonel was used to explain the team...

user114359
I got rid of flash long ago, unfortunately there are a few hoops to jump through to get HTML5 video not to play automatically

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Yes, although I blame the USA for that. We have a very ethnically and culturally diverse population. Cultures that still hate each other (and sometimes themselves) to this day. I was watching 60 Minutes recently and they were talking about how most European nations are nowhere near as diverse, and where foreigners immigrate and set up shop, they tend to have problems. Clashing cultures normally ends with annihilation, if history tells us anything.

@Snowman I can't speak for "most" European nations, but last I checked the UK was one of the most diverse on Earth. I find it hard to imagine any comparable area of the US is more so.
That being said, I doubt Sweden is terribly so.
Your words seem logical in the main.

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Pick any major US city and walk two miles through it. Odds are you will pass through multiple ethnic neighborhoods, each of them griping about the people in the neighborhoods around them.

@Snowman That sounds like every UK city.
But with more griping.
(Back to tweens again :P)

user114359
9:52 PM
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Can you end up with a knife in your back for being born belonging to the wrong group and daring to walk across the wrong turf?

@Snowman Yes, but as I said before, remarkably infrequently. I think what I'm trying to say is that we're not actually less diverse (we may even be more so): we're just less violent.

user114359
I'm agreeing with most non-US people here: this country is awful in many ways, even if it is great in others.

United States has almost 2x as many non-whites percentagewise as UK

Tolerance across the board seems to be a real problem in the US. The way you treat your women (oh my god), the fact that you guys still care about skin colour so much (lol!) .. it's like you're still in the 1950s. Perhaps that's what you're seeing.

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit That's the word I was looking for: tolerance. Doesn't exist in the USA.

9:54 PM
@enderland I imagine a large proportion of those are Hispanics, who are not deemed "ethnic" here.
@enderland Though the article probably says one way or another - I haven't looked ;p

user55340
One of those odd bits: Caucasian, born within 50 miles... Currently in a minority at workplace.

@Snowman There we go
@Snowman You're all so hell-bent on having the "freedom" to do whatever you want that you sort of forgot to teach your kids how to let other people do what they want too

@MichaelT only American in my team...

user114359
@LightnessRacesinOrbit Bingo. That is the crux of my libertarian philosophy on life.

@Snowman The irony is, basically all Western countries have as much or more freedom than the USA, but without invoking it all the bloody time we are not psychologically predisposed to obsess over it at the expense of other important things. Like good upbringing and lack of murder :)(

user55340
9:56 PM
@enderland no telecommuters here.

@MichaelT giggle
@enderland 'ang on where are you getting your "non-white" data on that page?

user55340
@LightnessRacesinOrbit key consideration - most of the US is rural.

oh, found it

user55340
When the nearest population center of more than 1000 people is over 100 miles away, different ideas about guns and government are to be found.

@enderland yeah I honestly think you're misinterpreting that a bit. you guys have a very narrow definition of "white" and it seems to have carried over onto those tables, despite the very clear breakdown - it just means you can't do a direct like-for-like comparison of the "white" line..

user114359
9:58 PM
@LightnessRacesinOrbit of all the Western countries, only in the USA can I attach a bayonet to my AR-15 and use it as an eating utensil.

@MichaelT I think that's a really key part of it
People sometimes talk about the US's population like the fact that it's x% more than some other country is important and everything should scale, but life doesn't work that way

user55340
Much of the frontier spirit is still strongly in place in the American psyche.

Your population distribution and the sheer scale of your country compared with the size of a human being is a huge factor in how your society has developed from others, I'd guess
Right, 'sactly

user114359
@MichaelT This. Or how about Alaska, where if you walk outside without a rifle loaded with +P rounds you are liable to be eaten by a bear.

Basically, you're all living on the moon, occasionally pretending to be civilised when the Earth's in comms range..

user55340
10:00 PM
And, unless the state is very urban, it is a dominant attitude. Regulating that spirit is very hard.

user114359
@MichaelT So, you basically described Texas.

user55340
In Europe, 100 miles is a long distance. In America, 100 years is a long time.
3

y'know, if this conversation were in the Lounge, three 60-year old Americans would have started streaming obscenities and vile personal comments at me by now. lulz
@MichaelT nice

user55340
Welcome to the only room on the SE network that doesn't have or need a code of conduct.

yeah my commute is 125 miles and it's getting to be a pain in the arse quite frankly
only there and back once a week mind you

user114359
10:02 PM
My commute is approximately 20 feet from my bed to the room across the hall.

user55340
When living in Eau Claire is drive 90 miles for dinner at times. Each way.

user55340
(There was a restaurant I liked in the next city over)

@Snowman That's the rest of the week :)
I've just done a quick calculation in my head and I'm going to say 12 feet from bed to where I am now

user55340
Room thing: I don't think we've had to flag or kick a user out of the room in over a year.

though I'd have to already be perched on the end of the bed that's nearest the bedroom door
@MichaelT lol 90 miles for dinner

user55340
10:05 PM
That's the next city of more than 1000 people.

unless it's like an event or something (visiting family who live elsewhere, say), I wouldn't go more than 5 miles for a meal. don't be absurd ;p
in fact dangit I'm hungry *opens takeaway website*

My boss is taking tomorrow off, so today is my last day with him here

I did drive 40 miles or so to a cinema once just because I quite liked the shopping complex it was in. A little treat for myself. Felt like a really weird thing to do, though.

Just had the first completely honest conversation with him I've had in two years

user55340
North it is closer to two hours drive. West was 70 miles depending on where you claimed Minneapolis to start. South was 90 miles too.

10:07 PM
@durron597 Did you finally tell him you hate him?

@durron597 what sort of things did you both say?

funny thing is that he completely agrees with me about almost everything I was unhappy about here

@durron597 It works that way sometimes. Can't be honest when you might have to see each other's faces the next day.

oh hang on what

@LightnessRacesinOrbit he is? I thought @durron597 was the one leaving

10:08 PM
ooh ok

oh nvm

he said he hates houston as much if not more than i do

Houston, we've had a problem.
(I get to say it if I get it right, right?)

and he hates how much of a subtraction from society finance is, just like me
and he agrees that he and i both are super underpaid
and that our work is super boring and that we need more people to do it right
but boss's boss and uber uber boss don't want to invest
anyway, gotta run, good evening all.

user55340
IT and technology are often seen as cost centers to be minimized.

user55340
10:13 PM
We, however, are value multipliers and cost dividers.

user55340
There is a cost, but we double the value of the product or cut the cost of other necessary things in half.

user55340
(Or more)

which costs are unnecessary is sooooo subjective

user55340
This leads to higher ups only seeing the cost without the roi in other areas.

user55340
Picture HR without computers today. Who keeps those running?

10:15 PM
pretty much any job you could call an "agent" or a "bureaucrat" is a useless cost centre to me

user55340
Any ways, that's the rant from Employer^^

user114359
I am grateful to be in a job where my time is billable at a large rate. I am most certainly in a profit center.

@MichaelT Doesn't help that they're universally morons

user55340
Tech companies typically realize the value as they are tech companies. Though line of business is often second fiddle.

the financial company I work at is trying to shift its brand towards that of a tech company
I think the goal is to improve the quality of programmers that apply to us, but they already seem to understand the value of us techies pretty well

10:22 PM
Any company that wants to be successful in the next 20 years needs to become a tech company

that's probably true

absolutely right
there's no future in food production, for example
pharmaceuticals likely on their way out too

unless you're automating them

I wouldn't call any company that uses tech "a tech company", personally
otherwise I think you'll find all but the smallest hippy businesses that use mechanical tills for the novelty factor (#irony) are tech companies!

I'm guessing what enderland had in mind was "a company that employs programmers to develop software for them or their clients"
if he meant "a company that uses computers" we're already at that stage

10:33 PM
mm
well then I stand by my initial response

Q: How do I start to develop a forensic software for data recovery

C. S. F. JuniorI wanna know which path follow to develop a forensic data recover software. Archtecture of computers, etc. Thanks in advance.

the statement is obviously ridiculous

user114359
Pick a random close reason

I appreciate the general sentiment, though :)

user114359
Too broad? Check. Unclear? Check. POB? Check. Off-topic? Check.

10:34 PM
@Snowman It's literally not a question.
Too bad I don't have VTC privs here
(PS. dammit, only just saw the title. well YKNOW)

missiles launched

psr
@Snowman Get your question deleted on PSE.

user114359
I'm in the kind of mood where I really want to answer that question but I don't think Yannis et al want to deal with my shenanigans.

lulz
bye for now ladies

Ugh, so many meetings.

11:40 PM
@Ixrec right. Companies are going to have to include tech pieces in their items in nearly all cases
car companies? tech companies. washer/driers? tech.. etc

11:52 PM
ugh what a miserable world we are building
