Q: Why does Java's Collection.size() return an int?

sanityWhy does Java's Collection.size() return an int? This limits the size of collections to just over 2 billion entries. With the rapidly increasing amounts of memory available to us, this seems a little short-sighted - no?

user55340
Aside, 2^31 entries is Fricking Huge memory if you are going to fill them up. Not insignificant fractions of a terabyte. If it was nothing more than 4 bytes each, thats 8 gigabytes of space.

You really need to sit down and learn the language. Asking (what is in effect) how to program Java question by question isn't the most productive way of going about things. docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/index.htmlMichaelT 19 mins ago

user55340
I can't find this in any mainstream books, programs, documents, or classes. I'm stumped. Thus- Stack exchange. — Caleb Woodman 1 min ago

Its right there on the side bar under "Language Basics" in the link above. Read all those pages. If Oracle's tutorials on Java isn't a mainstream document, then... you've got problems. — MichaelT 52 secs ago

user55340
sigh I'm almost going to do a recursive enum, try { } catch { } solution for this.

user55340
My apologies for putting this bluntly - if you are unable to go through a language basics tutorial and understand it, any answer we give will be unintelligible to you. You do not know the language if you are asking this question. Walking you through control structure by control structure (and how to use variables) is an excise in patience for us and doesn't do a good job of making useful material for other people to read (and have read the language tutorial). — MichaelT 12 secs ago

@MichaelT I saw that. I am not going to copy that answer, that is pointless, but I did switch both of mine to simple string searching instead of regex. I got both programs down to 140 ± 1 between that, removing optional braces, and some other stupid little tricks.

user55340
@Snowman I do like that someone did a bit manipulation approach rather than string and regex.

user114359
@MichaelT While that is fairly opinion-based on the surface, there are some interesting nuggets of knowledge that one could talk about based on the implications. For example, the fact that very large collections can be iterated regardless of size, and whether or not the whole collection can even fit in memory at once.

user55340
It is still replete with 'meh'.

A: Why does Java's Collection.size() return an int?

ebalenAnd who knows? Maybe when 2 billion is too small, they would have updated Java so an int holds more, or make a new primitive type.

user55340

A: Why does Java's Collection.size() return an int?

Dmitrythere is a problem to store all array values into RAM so such big lists will cause usage of swap file and make system too slow, i think it is a bad idea. You'd better use more suitable structures to store such amount of data

user55340
1:48 AM
There is one answer (maybe two) that try to actually answer the question. Everything else is guessing as to the reason and providing opinions.

user114359
I did notice several answers and comments making an unsafe assumption that clearly everything is about ArrayList due to "internal array size" and "indexing" which make no sense for a LinkedList or a non-list data structure, respectively.

user114359
I honestly kind of enjoyed that code golf using a non-esolang (normal-lang?). Feels like there are more opportunities to try vastly different solutions, and the thought process can help me in my every day coding.

user55340
@Snowman That is indeed the joy of code golf.

user55340
Now, I'm thinking about writing my own esolang for approaching this type of "pattern in numbers" type question.

@MichaelT I have always wanted to write my own language, but that is a tall order even with a CS background.

A: Iterated partial sums

ZeregesC++14, 102 103 + 17 (include) = 120 bytes #include<vector> auto f(std::vector<int> a,int n){int i,j=0;for(;j++<n;)for(i=0;i<a.size()-1;++i)a[i+1]+=a[i];return a;} Ungolfed, with test case #include <vector> #include <iostream> auto f(std::vector<int> a, int n) { int i, j = 0; for (; j++

user55340
This translates to (each pair of letters):
State A has 0 to A, 1 to b
State b has 0 to c, 1 to A
State c has 1 to c, 0 to b.

user114359
2:00 AM
I will have to poke around meta and see what the rules are for that. I might be able to squeeze more bytes out of my C++ solution.

user55340
Since A is capitalized, it is a "print this if this is the final state of the input"

user55340
Bit more than just that though, but you get the idea... encode a DFA in a string.

user114359
I'm not sure I quite follow the encoding

user55340
A:0A,1b;b:0c,1A;c:0b,1c

user114359
I actually did write a program to model a DFA once, but the encoding was a bit more verbose

user55340
2:02 AM
A bit more verbose approach.

user55340
Thing is, since you've got N transitions (for base N) for each state, you can pack it without needing to specify the '0' or '1'.

user55340
Add a bit more stuff with a "use base N" and "range of numbers" type information at the start of the program.... but thats the basic idea.

user55340
Now, for a language even more verbose than BF... esolangs.org/wiki/Mornington_Crescent

I'm sorry, I am using Visual Studio 2010, which is a "software tool commonly used by programmers". My question is "a practical, answerable problem that is unique to software development". It doesn't fit into the six categories defined in the help center as being a no-no. According to your rules, it's a valid question, but clearly several of you think it isn't, just because there isn't a code snippet. Clearly I misunderstood this site as being a place for developers to help other developers. Thanks, Sayse, for at least trying to be helpful, I will try UX. — CigarDoug 45 secs ago

user41796
Today's mud-slinging debate. Should you use an enum or an array of strings to represent a fixed collection of values?

what are the values?
and how do you use them

user41796
suits of cards, face values of cards.

enums
no need for the strings there IMO

user41796
That was my thought too

user41796
2:44 PM
About half of the exercises I get back have them defined as an array of strings

if you aren't allowed to use enums (for "reasons") then an int would also be ok

user55340
Unless you are playing mtg, number of valid cards is unlikely to change.

user55340
German card deck is 32 cards. An int is 32 bits. Coincidence?

@MichaelT TIL....

@GlenH7 what is the use case? it seems likely you might want some sort of custom basic class/etc if you are going to be doing things like comparisons (is K > Q?) or (KS > KH?)

user55340

@ratchetfreak These are (supposed to be) experienced professionals

ah, so something like "write a program that creates a deck of cards?"

I think it's more like design a class to represent a deck of cards
which can be done with a array of Card where each card is immutable and has a field Suit and Value

So not really super trivial, but still really straightforward and basic

user41796
@enderland I've uncovered blatant plagiarists too. :-(

user41796
2:51 PM
@enderland exactly

user41796
enough to demonstrate their logic or scruples.

good increasing levels of difficulty requirements but not "spend 8 hours on this"

so an List<Card> and some helper methods that forward to essentially deck.addAll and Collections.shuffle

user41796
@ratchetfreak You are leagues ahead of most candidates... :-(

@ratchetfreak an interesting part is combining decks

user41796
2:52 PM
most common approach is a fixed array using a magic number (52) for the deck

I'd probably over engineer the hands though
like make each hand hold indices into the deck

user41796
@enderland I have a number of variant questions I can about with changing the design based upon different requirements. Regrettably, most candidates don't get there

user41796
@ratchetfreak Woah there. Think about the responsibilities of the classes and the knowledge they should represent

@GlenH7 the straightforward approach initially is to make the "deck" the main class, with all the "draw" / "shuffle" etc operations on it, but if you have multiple decks.. that makes it more complicated

user41796
Good to want to prevent cheating, but tying the hand to the deck isn't a good idea IMO

2:54 PM
unless you make a deckbuilder class, which populates a single deck

user41796
@enderland some have gone down that road. Most have pursued uglier paths. :-)

which is probably the best way to go, since you could do "addStandardUSDeck" or "addJoker" operations pretty trivially and then your deck works fine
@GlenH7 really? this makes me sad

user41796
@enderland There has been more than one candidate where I've flat out rejected based upon the ugliness of their code and the horrors of their (lack of) logic.

ok that's what I'd do, at least for those requirements it's very simple to do everything using a simple deck, deckbuilder class, and card class (well depending on what you do with the poker reqs)
deckbuilder accounts for the "ah, but what about a 32 card German deck?" or "what about playing pinochle" situations easily

user41796
Yeah, it's meant to be a fun little exercise that's pretty quick to knock out and gives a chance to showcase logic.

user41796
2:57 PM
or a six deck shoe...

a hand is always dealt from a deck

@GlenH7 I might write this up as a fun example, now that I'm thinking about this haha

user55340
My particular use case for that German deck was Monte Carlo runs. Millions of hands dealt quickly and examined.

@enderland toss it up on codereview later

@ratchetfreak nah Glen wouldn't like that :P

user55340
2:58 PM
How often does one player lack any trump cards?

user41796
@enderland I'd ask that you don't copy the exact text of the exercise publicly

can't you get that from the probabilities

user41796
I've already got problems enough with people cheating by copying & pasting whole solutions. That particular version has been tweaked multiple times in order to force people down paths that other solutions I've seen on-line haven't addressed.

user55340
(After excluding cases of a miss deal - no ace, no face, no trump)

user55340
How often is a player finding the ace of trump their highest trump card?

user55340
3:00 PM
Easy to code. Hard to math.

user55340
Especially if you toss in more heuristics.

user41796
@MichaelT - do you know of any techniques to parallelize the operations after a portion of the deck has been dealt?

I hope you used a good RNG for that...

@GlenH7 yeah, I won't do that if I do it, but I might do it in a language relevant to potential-future-gig :|

user55340
How often when you have 8 points of trump (q is 4, j is 3, all other diamonds 1) is there trump in the blind?

user41796
3:02 PM
For example, in some games, the number of cards that may be dealt will vary by hand. But you'll have a number of descendant paths to consider that you'd like to run in parallel

user41796
@enderland Good for showing them a non-proprietary code sample

@GlenH7 if the entire point is to run millions of simulations you could just parallelize the entire shuffle/deck/etc thing

user55340
@GlenH7 oh hell.

user41796
@enderland Well, kinda

user41796
3:04 PM
I'm obviously thinking about something other than cards at this point... :-)

user41796
The broader problem is attempting to parallelize a problem where the current operations depend upon the state of prior operations.

unless you can math that out. Like multiplying with that previous 0/1 result to null out the unneeded operation

@GlenH7 well depends on how much you care, ie do you want to run 1000 hands in a row 1 million times? or 1 milllion hands in a row 1000 times? you can play with that pretty easily and quickly

user41796
A given run could have up to 31M iterations

user41796
Currently, we run all of those in series as the results of the prior operation affect the state of the current operation

3:10 PM
oh yeah!?!?!

do 2 runs in parallel?

user41796
But what I really want to do, is have a range of input parameters and slam those against that 31M iterations.

@GlenH7 reeeally???

user41796
Yes, really. :-)

the single & defeats short circuiting

user41796
yep

unless it's about the operator priority
though I believe it's == before & (not sure though)

user41796
3:19 PM
it equates to:

user41796
if( bool & bool & bool & bool )

only 4 bools

user41796
Doing a bitwise operation against bools is a bit nonsensical

2
A: Why is there both a short-circuit OR as well as unshort-circuited variation of that operator in C#?

ratchet freakthere would be 2 reasons: keeping side effects (but that's clearer to code with a temporary variable) thwart timing attacks by avoiding the fork in the short circuit (this may even improve the runtime efficiency if the second operand is a variable but that is a micro-optimization)

user41796
Nice.

user41796
3:23 PM
From my perspective, it's a mistake in logic that could prove quite painful later on. But I wonder if that's just my C bias showing through.

@JuanMendes I thought design questions should go to programmers.se? E.g., if you're thinking of your problem at the keyboard, then it's SO; if you're thinking of your problem at the whiteboard, then it's programmers.se. — Fuhrmanator 46 secs ago
@Fuhrmanator if you have working code that you want reviewed, CodeReview is a good bet (but make sure to read their guidelines). If you have a design question Programmers.SE is a good place. In this case it doesn't look like this code is functional yet so the question is more, "how can I design this class?" which is a better fit on Programmers.SE. But it's not clear if the question is feedback on working code or feedback on mostly working code. — enderland 40 secs ago
Thanks to all of those that have pointed to other portals such codereview.stackexchange.com or programmers.se. I did not know those portals, and I will ask there. Should I remove this question then? — Danielo515 58 secs ago
@Fuhrmanator - the design portion of this question is primarily opinion based and not a good fit for Programmers. For instance "But, I feel that I'm going to complicated for this task, and I want your opinion about it." and "Any opinion / constructive criticism is very welcome." — GlenH7 1 min ago

@GlenH7 I can't really figure out what that person is asking
It feels like they have a problem buried in their somewhere they want solved but.. ?

user41796
@enderland He's wringing his hands and thinks the design is bad but doesn't know why

@Danielo515 - Please don't re-ask this question on Programmers, it will get closed as primarily opinion based. As far as code review, you really need to review their help / on-topic page first before asking. If you do re-ask elsewhere, yes, you should close and delete the question here. — GlenH7 57 secs ago

Did you not read my comment on your cross-posted question?? This question is not a good fit for the StackExchange Q&A format as it's much too broad. — GlenH7 48 secs ago

Flamethrowers on that one, please.

user41796
@enderland temporary reprieves can be a very good thing indeed

Q: How do we find a better forum?

CigarDougI have been a Stack Overflow user for many years now, and have been overall very happy with the experience. I am all in favor of directing users to a better forum to answer their question, but telling a user "go find a better forum" is NOT helpful. I asked a design question for a Windows form. No...

LOL

Probably. Though it would explain the politics site too.

user41796
> Nope, no clue. I really hate sharepoint too.

user41796
And anybody who knows you know otherwise will know why you made that white lie

For all of the dog ear folks in here, I'm really, really, really impressed with the beyerdynamic dt770 pros

But they point out just how much of a bass fiend I am and how biased I am from my previous pair of headphones

@GlenH7 man this stuff really is so perfect timing

where she currnetly works also is having a FT position open up in spring (her grad 20/hr job is converting to FTE I guess) which might be the double bonus of all this if I end up bailing on megacorp

user41796
@enderland Assuming it's anything better than grad ass't slave wages... :-)

the grad jobs that suck are the 60 hour/week for "20 hours pay" jobs

user41796

Bennies can offset a lot. I had one with expectations for 40 hr / week for maybe 20 hrs pay

yeah, that's how mine was - hers is super great, good team to work with, she likes the work, is good at it, etc

        var processorFactory = new Func<ILoggingService, IExternalServiceProcessor>(l => new WebsiteProcessor(l));
        var websiteProcessor = processorFactory(new LoggingService());
Can anyone speculate on why that lambda is there?
Other than to be deliberately obtuse?
Or why you even need a Func there, really.

Oh. Everyone should go see Bridge of Spies. Good movie. Some of the timing of events is a little off. But it's really good.

user55340
Hmm. That migration took 30 minutes to go through.

@RobertHarvey lazy instantiation?

That's entirely possible. I hadn't thought of that.

user41796
one moment and I'll have a link.

long moment...
hahahahaah

user41796
@RobertHarvey Skeet covers that lazy initialization approach here: csharpindepth.com/Articles/General/Singleton.aspx#nested-cctor

@GlenH7 Thanks!

user41796
I happened to have been creating a singleton lately, and that's my go-to reference to make sure I get it right

Because six ways to do it are better than one.

user41796
A few of them are obviously bad.... And the value is in understanding why they're bad

user41796
Because obvious isn't obvious until you understand why

Makes it a bit hard to say no to your request when he's likely asking the same thing of his boss

yeah I forgot lol. but let's just say that streamlines all our "what to do with life" decisions in the future...

@SimpleJ broken = stack. Working, but could be improved = code review. Conceptual/theoretical = programmers. I'd say if you're asking about a specific problem (which you're facing), SO is a better place. CR is more for reviewing your app once its done than helping you with design decisions. — Dan Pantry 50 secs ago

I love it when I buy something fully-assembled and there is an extra screw loose in the box.

user55340

@MichaelT is that better than the on site search?

user114359
@RobertHarvey Nice.

user55340
@enderland it's Google backed for all SE sites.

So you search so, p.se, su, ... With one go.

well for duplicates I normally just want one site though

user55340
Can help finding relevant sites when unsure. Very useful for the "well, where should I ask it" type.

definitely

Q: Is this a good question? - How come Land Speed Records for Cars get higher speeds than motorcycles? (Even though they're less aerodynamic?)

MalandyIs this a good question? How come Land Speed Records for Cars get higher speeds than motorcycles? (Even though they're less aerodynamic?) Is it because more rocket can be packed onto a car, as compared to a motorbike? Posted, and flagged for a move to Engineering: What are the biggest reaso...

Questions that ask "where do I start" are typically too broad and are not a good fit for this site. People have their own method for approaching the problem and because of this there cannot be a correct answer. Give a good read over Where to Start, then address your post. — Kyll 45 secs ago

During the day, I'm a chatter via mobile only. Kind of sucks.

user41796
@MichaelT Physics migrated it to Engineering. An evil, overbearing mod who realized it was ridiculously broad kicked it back to the curb where it belonged.
