Why does Java's Collection.size() return an int? This limits the size of collections to just over 2 billion entries. With the rapidly increasing amounts of memory available to us, this seems a little short-sighted - no?

Aside, 2^31 entries is Fricking Huge memory if you are going to fill them up. Not insignificant fractions of a terabyte. If it was nothing more than 4 bytes each, thats 8 gigabytes of space.

@SimpleJ broken = stack. Working, but could be improved = code review. Conceptual/theoretical = programmers. I'd say if you're asking about a specific problem (which you're facing), SO is a better place. Questions that ask "where do I start" are typically too broad and are not a good fit for this site. People have their own method for approaching the problem and because of this there cannot be a correct answer. Give a good read over Where to Start, then address your post. — Kyll 45 secs ago
