@gnat I think it's better closed against the linked-to question in the suggested dupe. Your answer there with the specification pattern addresses how to refactor the code.

@GlenH7 probably so. This time, I hesitated to flag for refund-and-close (like I did 2 or 3 days ago): question doesn't feel bad enough to justify such an intervention
thought it can wait till the natural end of bounty

user41796
it's not a bad question, but it's not great. And it is a dup.

@GlenH7 agree. Oh btw, here's another dead man walking for you. It's a dup and it's bad...

Q: What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn?

Recursion Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? I have been using Dokuwiki but it is not very elegant and really doesn't look very nice. So does anybody else have any other recommendations?

user41796
@gnat I'll let you know what happens with my flag on that question.

user41796
@gnat BAM! @YannisRizos nailed it.

user41796
7:06 PM
hey @Chad. How are ya? Did we send more crap over to TW? We'll beat our mods for it, if you'd like.

@GlenH7 lol no
I did refer a user to here from this:workplace.stackexchange.com/q/17385/16
but i suggested they as in chat not on the site

user41796
@Chad Perfect Q for chat. We get those periodically

user41796
And that person has 47 rep on SO so they can drop into any chat room.

user41796
Ugh! I'm a measly 2 rep from being able to see vote splits on MSO. <sigh> The impatience...

@GlenH7 impatience? Surely you can answer some stupid .NET question on SO. It's stupidly easy getting rep on SO sometimes, just not satisfying

7:14 PM
@GlenH7 There you should lub me lots :p

user41796
yes!

I'm here from the question Glen was referring to. There's no real point in spamming it here, since it's already been linked, so could anyone give me any advice?

user41796
@JimmyHoffa not SO, MSO. Didn't you see the maelstrom I unleashed?

@GlenH7 nope, but That is pretty awesome

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell Blame Chad, he linked it. :-)

7:16 PM
Yeah, I meant Chad, not Glen

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell so you're wanting to get into programming, but don't know where to start?

You can see vote splits now

yes. Looking at other forums, many of the people asking have little to no experience in programming, but I am pretty familiar with it already

bravo on choice of images for the example

user41796
@JimmyHoffa thanks!

7:17 PM
@JimmyHoffa he was one angry little man

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell Direct to Uni is out of the question? And why seattle? There's lots of good Universities for comp sci & software engineering

user41796
@Ampt was

@JoshuaMerrell Find an entry level position with a company doing java. Show them your work, offer to do it for cheap... work there a year or 2 and move on to somewhere that will pay you going rate... that is the easiest way in

Well no, but I'm not really well off financially at the moment, that's why I'm at job corps. And because I like the city. It's not so much because of my career, but because I want to live there.

@GlenH7 err was? did he pass?

7:18 PM
@Chad Alright. I've worked with it plenty, but I'm not really a fan of Java, but if it means getting my foot in the door, then so be it :/

wheres a link to that question again?

@JoshuaMerrell What are you wanting to work in?

JavaEE has a large grasp in a lot of places

user41796
@Ampt - yes. Ping me again later

Software development, but I'm not really sure on what exactly I want to do with it yet.

7:20 PM

Q: Getting into the software development field

Joshua MerrellI apologize if this isn't the right subform for this, but I would like some advice. I am planning on pursuing a software development/programming career, but I'm not sure about the specifics of actually getting started aside from an obvious bachelor's degree in CS. I am currently attending Job Co...

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell - that helps clarify some things. Are you in a decent sized metro area already?

user41796
or in a tiny place?

@JoshuaMerrell no offence, but I haven't seen certs carry any weight around the programming world

grrrr time to rant about a different subject... I hate when people pile on down votes to questions by new users that are not horrible just off topic... /rant off

not that you need a degree, but cert's probably aren't a great use of your time

user41796
7:21 PM
@Ampt that's true. People even argue about Professional Engineer licensure....

Possibly some kind of lower level web development, since I've worked with it a little bit, but I'm not sure yet
@GlenH7 It's not huge, but it's a decent sized city

user41796
@Chad they'll pick up a -1 on Progs to indicate VTC and remove.

@Ampt none taken, but I thought I remember hearing somewhere that a cert might help. Oh well.

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell so you're looking to lay out a strategy for short term + longer term after going to Uni.

@JoshuaMerrell honestly, if I had to do it without getting a degree, I would do a ton of open source in my spare time

7:22 PM
Yes

open source projects are sometimes hard to get on because of their size

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell they often aren't worth the effort / cost to obtain.

but if you can point to commits and say "I made this" employers will be impressed

@Ampt that's what I do already. It's not very big, but my main project right now is bitbucket.org/eggbertx/gochan if that means anything

Good good. Try and jump on well known projects too. You'd be surprised at what all is open source

7:23 PM
@Ampt I have never had an employer even look at any of my commits... but yes having them there has helped

user41796
Something is always better than nothing. Our local resident, @JimmyHoffa, has been a professional programmer for eons but never went to college. So it's an option to consider. But he's also had some lucky breaks in having doors opened for him.

@GlenH7 - no prob. Though that specific user has been deleted. Gone. Is no more. — Oded 2 hours ago
He has ceased to be

user41796
Going to college is probably the easiest route to get plugged into internships because employers will go to the Uni for talent

@Chad depends on where you're at in your career though. I'm a new grad out of software engineering, so I've got the degree thing going, but I have been asked if I've worked on any open source projects they could see

I've heard that might help as well. I'm not sure if I have the skill to make much of a difference in a large project, but I'll see what I can do.

user41796
7:25 PM
Realizing that there can be a significant cost-to-entry just stepping onto the campus

@GlenH7 ugh. where were you 5 years ago

user41796
There are freelance websites where you can work as a contractor, but you may have an uphill battle without a strong portfolio behind you

@GlenH7 from what I've heard, nowadays, college is an absolute must. And I plan to get into an internship

user41796
@Ampt My Uni had a higher price tag than yours. I feel your pain anyway. :-)

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell Not an absolute must, but certainly a lot easier going down that route.

7:26 PM
@JoshuaMerrell I would argue that it's not quite mandatory... yet. in 5 years? yeah probable

user55340
Back when I went to the university... it was I think ~$120/credit/semester.

mainly because the industry is hurting for talent.

@JoshuaMerrell Yes but you can get a low paying entry level position with no real experience...

user41796
The burden of proof against you without a degree is much higher than the burden with a degree

@GlenH7 was your university on the moon? I'm not sure how much more expensive you can even get... lmao

7:27 PM
then you work there a few years and bingo now you have been a professional programmer for 2 years and have worked on actual production projects > 4 years at any univeristy except maybe cal tech or MIT

user55340
(and internships were nonexistant. They were things you did over the summer, if at all, to get a few extra $$ and work in your field)

"Mars University" is episode eleven of the first production season of Futurama. It originally aired in North America on October 3, 1999 as the second episode in the second broadcast season of Futurama. This episode was written by J. Stewart Burns and directed by Bret Haaland. Plot The Planet Express crew's latest mission is to deliver a crate to Professor Farnsworth's office at Mars University. While touring the campus, Bender comes across a chapter of his old fraternity, Epsilon Rho Rho (Err). The nerdy fraternity brothers beg Bender for his help in the art of being cool, as "even has b...

And I'll check out a freelance website as well.
@Ampt really? I thought it was more bloated, I wasn't aware that it was in need of more talent
@Chad oh, I didn't know that. I thought even a low paying job would require a degree. If that's the case, that would make a great start I guses

user41796
@Ampt My Uni was about 5 miles SW of yours.

@JoshuaMerrell at least where I'm sitting they need more talent.

7:28 PM
degree or experience*
@Ampt is that in the US?

user55340
I know you can get a job at my former employer without a degree... sure, you'll make $0.50 less per hour than everyone else...

@JoshuaMerrell The demand for low wage programmers is huge

@JoshuaMerrell Yes, in the US

That's fine. Even a low wage programming job would be great. It's better than nothing, and I imagine it'd be more relevant than a computer repair job

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell - you can most certainly land a programming job without a degree. The key is to have an online presence so employers know what they're getting. Your SO questions are fairly decent

7:30 PM
midwest to be specific

Though to make ends meet, I'll probably end up doing both at the same time, which is fine

in the US if you are willing to work for 10-15/hour doing programming you can barely scrape by for a few years then walk into a 50k+ a year job 2 years later with pretty much any company

honestly, computer repair is barely related to programming at all nowadays. That would lead you to a more IT path
@Chad 10-15/hr scraping by?

@Chad that's fine, as long as I can live on that, I don't really care if it's low paying, as long as it'll pay off
@Ampt that was my point, it won't help much aside from making money to pay for college

@GlenH7 well now we can't be friends anymore

user41796
7:31 PM
Fine, I take it back. :-)

hahahaha I didn't know you were also from the area!

@Ampt You could not live on that in a major city... if you do it in a 100kish market you can though

user41796
@Chad It's doable, especially with a plan to keep moving up / save enough to get to college

@GlenH7 and I hate to say it, I think we're pretty equal in cost. maybe back during when you went it was different :P
@Chad I live in a major city on that. If I worked 40 hours a week I would do fine on that

@GlenH7 I did it I know its doable... sucks living in a hole in the wall eating ramen 6 nights a week though

user41796
7:33 PM
@JoshuaMerrell since you're in a smaller market, you'll really have to research the potential employers in town.

you'll have to live in a shitty apt but its not impossible either

Hell, if I can find a programming job in my current location (even better if it has the potential to pay more than computer repair) I'll jump right on that

user55340
Where I live, the median household income is $42k. Getting $15/h would be a bit tight, but is quite doable here. $20/h is where most of the computer programmers are at my former employer.

Regardless, I have no problem with having two jobs

user55340
@GlenH7 btw, your MSO trolling... you've gotten to 1k rep now.

7:34 PM
@GlenH7 you know, cuz you're old.

user41796
@MichaelT I know, I know. I'm giddy

@Ampt That is the only saving grace at that rate you can probably get authrorized 50-60 hours a week once you prove you can do it. Which will only earn you more cred with management.

user55340
Its a matter of writing it right... while SO hates fun, MSO enjoys well crafted fun because they get so much not-well-crafted-unfun.

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell Another option to consider is to start researching companies in the Seattle area. While you may not be able to crack into the big shops, there's a lot of smaller to medium shops that would consider you. With a local gig for a short period of time, you'll build up career experience and can get them to consider you.

user41796
Also start looking at their Uni's & community colleges. It might work out to go to their local CC, land a paying gig, then transfer to Uni.

user55340
7:36 PM
@Ampt I went to school 60 miles west of you...

If getting a programming job as it is now is doable, that's what I'll be doing. And I should have specified, I was probably going to go with a CC anyway

user41796
Not sure you'll be able to get an employer to pay for the move, but that's icing on the cake at the moment.

I'm not counting on one paying for it

user55340
and yea, think about that again... $120/credit = ~$1400/semester.

user41796
Simply due to size, you may have better luck finding employers in Seattle than you would with your current location

7:38 PM
I figured that was the case, another benefit of moving there

@JoshuaMerrell Where are you?

@MichaelT You always seemed a little... mad

user41796
@Ampt oh, we're both way older than that.

user55340
Don't rule out small cities either if thats something you would be open too. The universities and various companies need people too... and the brain drain pulls people away from the small cities.

I love the big cities, having more career opportunities makes it that much better
@Chad Eastern Washington, so it won't be a huge move

7:39 PM
@JoshuaMerrell what country are you in if you don't mind me asking

user55340
@Ampt closer to 15-20 years...

user41796
@JoshuaMerrell look at the smaller colleges too. in-state tuition may be lower than out-of-county community college tuition

@MichaelT by Seattle I don't mean right in the middle of the city, I mean the greater Seattle area, probably a smaller town
@Ampt US, eastern WA

user55340
I'd actually say keep options such as Spokane and Pendelton in your mind and check out there too. There are companies there too that need programmers.

@JoshuaMerrell The thing to remember is everywhere needs IT help now a days. You can find often find work doing IT help with a side of programming at larger professional offices.
Then just emphasize the programming work you did on on your resume

7:41 PM
@Chad That's how I got in.

@MichaelT I live in Spokane right now, actually, so that's not an issue
@Chad that's why I'm at Job Corps working towards my A+, to get a decent (hopefully) IT job

well sort of; one of the best things you can do is get a job at a software company - any job

user41796
@Chad that's very similar to what I was about to say. Getting an A+ cert is fairly easy and opens the door for doing repair / assembly work. You can keep programming on the side. From there you work it so your responsibilities take on more and more programming. I have a friend who did the same thing

Anyway, I need to get going, thank you all for the help and clarification, I appreciate it

7:42 PM
once you're in it's just a matter of convincing people there to let you help out with code, and you have 40 hours a week to do that for as long as you're willing to try.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa I'd say most medium - large companies are software companies, they may just not know it yet.

Jimmy, you need an assistant right?

@JimmyHoffa Software companies in the midwest do not do 40 hour weeks :p

@Chad ? what do they do?

user41796
@Chad some do. Many don't. Depends upon local culture

7:44 PM
@JimmyHoffa 60+

not when I was at KC but ok

user41796
@Chad find a new gig and then quit. That's too much.

user55340
Following up on my previous message: forbes.com/sites/techonomy/2011/11/30/…

@GlenH7 Well thats why I dont work for a software company

user55340
> Ford sells computers-on-wheels. McKinsey hawks consulting-in-a-box. FedEx boasts a developer skunkworks. The era of separating traditional industries and technology industries is over—and those who fail to adapt right now will soon find themselves obsolete.

One thing I have learned to do is to identify the meat grinders wherever I'm living. And then I avoid them like the plague.

I disagree. Meat grinders are a great place to cut your teeth if you are young and single.
you can get 3 years of experience in a year

user41796
@Chad I hear what you're saying, but I don't fully agree. I think that leads to sloppy habits and an increased likelihood of burnout.

@GlenH7 so...... you're hiring then?

user41796
@Ampt actually, we'll likely have a slot opening up in a few months. But we're waiting to see what the backlog looks like first.

user55340
7:50 PM
If you want to go with a meatgrinder, go as a contractor so that you can get out cleanly quickly.

user41796
@MichaelT yes, and you have the company backing you to a degree if the project goes sour.

user41796
It's crazy how comments just come to a complete halt in here at random moments

Lol rare moment where i was actually expected to do work :p

user41796
crazy talk indeed. I'm pondering how I want to modify a service. Unfortunately, I think the cleanest way is to create a brand new one.

@GlenH7 That sounds like something to start monday :p

> The song on the jukebox ended, and for a moment, the bar fell quiet, every conversation at a lull.

"Someone once told me that you only get those everybody-shuts-up-at-once moments at twenty past or twenty to the hour," said Shadow.

Sweeney pointed to the clock above the bar, held in the massive and indifferent jaws of a stuffed alligator head. The time was 11:20.

"There," said Shadow. "Damned if I know why that happens."

"I know why," said Wednesday. "Drink your mead."

@GlenH7 well well well

all right time to bang my head on the wall and try to get something changed take care.

@Ampt I thought you already had problems enough picking between your current two offers

Q: Why are people from India overrepresented when i search for ASP.NET articles and tutorials?

user111662I feel like 80% percent of all content on the internet regarding ASP.NET is created by people from India. This is not the case with other languages like PHP, etc. Is there any reason for this or is it just coincidence? For me it would seem more logical if they knew languages that are used on fre...

that question drips with thinly veiled, pathetic xenophobia.

user41796
@YannisRizos - thanks for the close on that one.

user55340
@GlenH7 xenophobia isn't only our troll.

user55340
8:28 PM
Get @YannisRizos or another 10k mso to glance at the question in meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/198677/…

user41796
True. It was just that the writing reminded me of some of his alternative attempts at trolling.

I wasn't going to insta-delete it, but:

user41796
@YannisRizos yeah, it's carefully crafted to attract retribution.

But still fly just under the radar of blatant xenophobia

@GlenH7 No idea what happened to his account, and no, the IPs don't match.

user55340
The answer, if one was to actually look into it with any degree of sense is the same one as "why are there so many programmers from California" and complaining about that from rural elsewhere.

user41796
"Those things are now gone..." That's my sage advice of the day

user55340
The answer: because California is evil and needs to fall into the ocean.

user41796
@MichaelT It's harder to use transference and apply that to states in the middle of the country.

user55340
Hmm... wonder if I should post a "what sci-fi was that" in Sci-fi.SE... short story about an engineer working on predicting earthquakes, and predicting Cali was going to fall into the ocean. Then just before the earthquake realized he got the sign backwards in the equation... wasn't Cali, but rather "everything east of the San Andreas" - ended with him in Cali looking east and realizing the closest land was Spain.

user41796
8:40 PM
I guess you could say "Kansas should return to being the bottom of the ocean" ?

Leslar has caused troubles in various SE sites. I do remember someone talking about nuking all his accounts at once from all sites, but that was a while ago. I'll venture a guess and say that Oded asked someone else to take a closer look (as he was directly involved), and that someone just pressed the big red button when he realized who exactly Andy was. Or, at least, that would be what I would have done.

The International Appalachian Trail (IAT; , SIA) is a hiking trail which runs from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Mount Katahdin, Maine, through New Brunswick, to the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec, after which it takes bridge crossings to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, a ferry ride to Newfoundland, and then continues to the northern-easternmost point of the Appalachian Mountains at Belle Isle, Newfoundland and Labrador. Further sections have been designated within Great Britain and there are proposals to extend it further within Europe and North Africa. History Th...

Geological evidence shows that the Appalachian Mountains, certain mountains of Western Europe, and the Anti-Atlas range in North Africa are parts of the ancient Central Pangean Mountains, made when minor supercontinents collided to form the supercontinent Pangaea more than 250 million years ago. With the break-up of Pangaea, sections of the former range remained with the continents as they drifted to their present locations. Inspired by this evidence, efforts are being made to extend the IAT into Western Europe and North Africa.

user55340
@YannisRizos Its fairly clear that he wasn't going to be a productive member anywhere for at least half a decade or so. Learning that when you want to work with adults, you need to behave like an adult will be a good learning experience for him - if he accepts it as such.

user41796
@MichaelT Clearly I've got a ways to go with that lesson as well

8:44 PM
I hate when it's so close to vacation. Not to mention the people already gone.

user41796
@ThomasOwens Why are you still at work?!?! :-)

user55340
I'll admit we can be a bit silly here... and adults let loose too... but still, one can't behave like a bratty kid all the time and expect not to get spanked sometime.

@GlenH7 I'm leaving soon to go to the city. Just finishing up a few things.

user41796
I just had a stroke of brilliance. I should get all of the P.SE mods to answer with "yes" to my MSO question

Thomas OwensYes! As a Programmers moderator, I fully support this. And while we are at it, can we add sound effects to moderator tools? For example, a taser when we suspend a user. Or a gunshot (perhaps with the "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" effect) when we destroy an account. A jail cell clanking shut when a question ...

@ThomasOwens hot dang! Now I need to hunt down some other mods... :-)

user41796
@ChrisF, @maple_shaft, @WorldEngineer - any chance I can talk you into adding an answer to my MSO question pretty please? I think it would be epic to have all 5 mods agree that we need the changes.

Fun fact: I can't see the pictures at work. I have no idea what I'm agreeing to. But I agree with it.

user41796
@ThomasOwens - it's pretty easy. It's just Andy's last quote and then the Doom Beserk image that gnat throws around all over.

WHO DOWNVOTED THAT IDEA?

user55340
Some people are just anti-friday.

user41796
@ThomasOwens Pretty sure I picked one of those up from Kate Gregory. The 2nd Doom image I used was a bit gory.

user41796
But maybe not, since she added a comment later showing support of the idea.

user55340
@ThomasOwens does picascii.com with a url of i.stack.imgur.com/Q6WBT.jpg work for you?

ChrisFThe Programmers theme is meant to be more understated that some of the other sites - reflecting a much used whiteboard (that is unless I've missed what @Jin was aiming for completely). While it works OK for regular use, I agree there should be more contrast for deleted posts. I'm not sure I'd go...

Happy?

user41796
@ChrisF Yep. I'll take it! I think it will be quite the coup to get all 5 mods to weigh in. Good fun for a Friday.

user41796
@MichaelT may not up vote since he was the one proposing blood red, but I agree that it would be a bit much that way. :-)

user41796
@ChrisF and thanks! for doing so.

I've tweaked it a bit to get more in the spirit of the thing.

psrThe current answers are great, but don't address the fact that as a Programmers user still a little bit under 10k, I would like to participate in the gamification as well, as I'm sure many other users would too. Of course, I don't want to upset the privilege system currently in place, but as a s...

@MichaelT - have a look at the suggested edit review queue, please.

user55340
@GlenH7 reviewed.

user55340
(I was giving book recommendations to the project / operations-ish manager)

user41796
@MichaelT I wouldn't want real work SE to get in the way of your SE duties real work.

user55340
@GlenH7 I think it was Amazon Web Service as the department.

@MichaelT K, I just got an invite from Kindle. Apparently they're going on a roadshow trying to recruit folk. Job would require relocation too

Ohh... notification from an answer on MSO

A: Notify users of possible reviews on toolbar

LauraYou're absolutely right that we can do more to get new reviewers active in all of our review queues. We're exploring a bunch of possibilities, but it will take some time to figure out what the right approach is; the ideas we like most are much more technically complicated than the ideas we could ...

And I looked over the comments in the soon-to-be Ars question. I flagged 3 or 4, but the rest would take too much work to rip out.

user41796
@MichaelT It would be wrong to drop a link to my gamification MSO request as a comment to that answer.

user41796
But I'm sorely tempted

Probably not the best idea.

user55340
It would be curious to note that you and I are the two most active P.SE reviewers (you've got a comment on the other answer)

user41796
@MichaelT Props on clearing 3k BTW

user41796
4k blew by and I didn't notice when it happened

user41796
somehow I managed to blow through all of my delete votes today too

user55340
(whee, answer that I gave is now on MSO)

Only a +10 rep though.

user55340
@GlenH7 I see only 2 new ones for me... you must have gone through and cleaned up a whole bunch that I had otherwise already voted on.

user41796
@MichaelT I have been running through /tools lately

user41796
Do you have any deletes left today?

user41796
I'd like to see this one and this one be nuked.

user55340
... two blood curdling screams later... still pink backgrounds. No fireworks.

user41796
10:36 PM
WAT?! I WANT MY FIREWORKS!

user55340
They're gone... but I didn't get any fireworks on the screen.

user41796
I'm curious if SE will formally answer my MSO request

user55340
Could you picture trying to write a greasemonkey script for that? "Hey guys, could you cast all but one delete vote on these questions so that I can test my code..." (100 questions later...) still got some bugs to work out...

user55340
10:50 PM
@GlenH7 I'm not sure if they ever formally answer any friday in iceland request... though Shog was the first commentator... so there's the answer?

psr
@MichaelT They do when iceland freezes over. Er, something like that.

Q: Domain Model and POCO mapping design

davenewzaIn a step to understanding Domain-Driven Design, I am busy moving away from using anemic, POCO-style classes to rather working with rich domain models. Typically my repositories would return these POCO classes. The classes were also mapped to the database using the Entity Framework Fluent API. ...
