The official policy is that I should lock this. Does anyone object to it being deleted? Finding all functions $f$ from positive integers to positive integers such that $f(x^2+y^2)=f(x)f(y)$ and $f(x^2)=f(x)^2$‭ - jadeep‭ 2021-04-13 19:07:52Z

@XanderHenderson I don't know what is best to do here but, for what it's worth, there's at least 2 small advantages I can think of to lock the post instead of deleting it. One is that for anybody who sees this post, they will be informed that our community doesn't accept cheating on active math contests. Second, if a similar question is posted and somebody searches for a duplicate to find this post, they will know the other question should also not be answered.

Wrong answer because the implication is the wrong direction and so it is not a correct solution.
@JoséCarlosSantos One more delete-vote needed.

@user21820 It's gone now! Thank you.

1:08 PM
Close? Note that the many upvotes are probably drive-by votes from HNQ.

1:53 PM
@user21820 Can I ask what HNQ means?

@soupless Hot Network Question(s) -- there's a list on the right-hand side of the main site that lists questions across the network of SE sites that are getting lots of views

Yes. I see it, including the Hot Meta Posts
Wait, this is the questions on the lower part, and Hot Meta Posts are above, right?

@soupless yes, the lower part, from many other SE sites. Usually one from Academia, and often a couple from Puzzling
I haven't read any messages about them yet in here, but usually the problem is a low quality or PSQ making it onto the HNQ list as it brings people here thinking this is a "do my homework" site

Is there some way to say to people that this site is not one?
@postmortes I think the cookies come to play at this part, or no? I have no idea about cookies, but it just came to my mind.

2:12 PM
@soupless well, that would require an actual consensus from the community that it is the case, and we don't have one. The community splits into two parts mostly: people who think this isn't and shouldn't be, and people who will answer anything and enjoy that, so don't want to make that statement as it would reduce what they can answer
if you look at Physics.SE they are very firm on not answering homework questions and their site has a slightly different feel to it. Personally I'd rather be more like physics: good, interesting relevant questions that aren't drowned in a sea of "this weird integral can't be solved! Or can it?"

Yes. The "best" ones are the image-only questions, commonly has a text link of 'insert image description title' or something

exactly. But until we get a consensus, or the site splits into Math.SE and MathHomework.SE, we have to police the HNQ a little as well. As I understand it, MathJax in the question title will automatically remove a question from the HNQ, so sometimes it's possible to remove poor/low quality questions with an improving edit :)

Should there be a "room" for training, like 'Oh. It seems that you encoded mathematical equations/expressions without the use of MathJax. We recommend/require you to go to this room to learn how to do so.'

An example of a mediocre question which I was motivated to answer because I felt that the other two answers (particularly the highest upvoted answer) were insufficient. I would not be opposed to closure, but someone please let me know if it is closed, as I think that the underlying question is reasonable, and I would be tempted to post a new question and migrate my answer there.

@soupless there's an FAQ. People seem disinclined to read that, so I doubt very much they'd turn up in a room for "training" or any description either :)

2:25 PM
I would also be interested if anyone comes up with a good dupe target---the best I found was this, but the expression there does not simplify to a polynomial.

@postmortes Should there be a badge that indicates you still don't have the grasp over MathJax or ... well, never mind. That will be a shame.

@soupless badges that shame people will not be well-received by the network generaly :-D
@XanderHenderson your answer is significantly better than the other ones; I especially like the correct use of the plural data :) That aside, it's a good answer to a reasonable question. +1

@postmortes Let me reverse it. Those who use MathJax will receive a badge,

@postmortes It should also be noted that there are technical "problems" ("features"?) which prevent some of the best Math SE questions from appearing on the HNQ. Because not all SE sites use MathJax, any question with MathJax in the title will not render properly in the HNQ list on other SE sites. As such, questions with MathJax in the title are automatically excluded from the HNQ.
Since good questions have good titles, often involving mathematics, good questions are often a priori excluded.
Contrast this with low-quality questions written by folk who don't know how to write a good title or don't know about MathJax. Such questions are often quickly upvoted and answered here (contributing to "hotness"), and are not excluded from the HNQ for technical reasons.
Thus the questions sent to the HNQ from Math SE are systematically biased towards being a poor representation of what Math SE is supposed to be.

@XanderHenderson What are the qualifications for a question to be considered "hot"?

2:32 PM
Note that moderators can remove questions from the HNQ (and we do).

@XanderHenderson: while the question you linked is mediocre, your answer is really great and very detailed.

@soupless I don't know the precise algorithm, but I believe that it has to do with (1) number of views, (2) number of answers, and (3) number of upvotes (on the question and its answers).

@XanderHenderson It can also be time-based, right?

@XanderHenderson True, I'd forgotten we have that (probably unique) problem

@postmortes @ParamanandSingh I appreciate the kind words regarding the answer, though I am more concerned about whether or not the question is worth keeping around.
@soupless Yes, there is some "decay" in how these things are counted.
That is, a single view a week ago is weighted less than a single view today.

2:34 PM
@XanderHenderson I think the question is reasonable, as I said. If there's a dupe, and it's better, then by all means close as a dupe, but it's the kind of question that comes up from students when learning about polynomials and as you note, the answer isn't an easy "yes"/"no"

@XanderHenderson: I think the question is ok, we don't need to close it.

Thanks for the input.

@user21820: the thread contains another answer which sort of deduce that $n=11^{1/11}$ and in my view should be accepted. For the answer you linked it is better to drop a comment that one should establish the uniqueness of $n$.

3:02 PM
@ParamanandSingh Indeed, the other answer is better, but unfortunately the asker accepted the bad answer.
@ParamanandSingh I think it should be downvoted and deleted because it was posted a whole day after the better answer and yet was wrong.

@user21820: while I prefer correctness in math over other considerations we should give the answerer a chance to fix their post. A downvote is ok, but maybe let's wait for delete.
@user21820: also the question involved is PSQ which is already closed and might get deleted, so I think let's not worry too much

3:26 PM
@XanderHenderson WOW. I don't know the exact context, but the point is that the object $(x^2-4)/(x-2)$ is being talked about as an expression. For me, while that doesn't explicitly signal context, it certainly tells me that the OP is not quite looking at this as a function, which would put the real analytic, and measure theoretic definitions a little in the background, and give the algebraic viewpoint some prominence.

4:21 PM
@XanderHenderson It is a somewhat poor question, but in any case, I think you used a sledgehammer to answer it, because it is clearly an algebra (as in algebra-precalc question), it is a rational expression, so even if the OP forgot "y=$ as a prefix" it is not a polynomial. Any way, I think your time could be better spent than writing a TL;DR answer, to it. Again a case where an answerer is biased about the quality of the question they answered. A few helpful comments could have prompted ...
... the asker to clarify, in an edit, the context of the question, instead of answerers trying to "guess the context and cover all possibilities".
Mostly, though, @Xander, whenever a mod answers a question and asks for feedback, and further justifies why one answered it, how many users in CURED are likely to disagree with you? It's not a fair question to ask here, because users are well trained to always maintain compliance to a mod and tell him what he wants to hear, for the most part. I guess that's why you hate me so much, because I am honest in my feedback, regardless of title or power imbalance.

@Peter: gone

@ParamanandSingh Oh my gosh, you beat me. I was able to cast a delete vote, but yours registered a millisecond before mine! ;P

@amWhy: maybe I got lucky this time otherwise I am not that fast (because of mobile device)

@ParamanandSingh Anyway, it's good to know there were actually 4 delete votes, so plenty of evidence suggests it certainly merited deletion! ;D

4:32 PM
Hahaha

A comment in this question was "everything follows a pattern" apparently also meant in physics. But this discussion has been moved to chat anyway.

@Peter Do you have a link?

no , is the chat open at all now after the question has been deleted ?

4:50 PM
@amWhy Yes, that is true! Although where could he ask? I don't know about what the other moderators think? He could ask the new "double-mod", maybe.
One thing, though. That question (and answer) is a real "abstract-duplicate" target now.
Anyway, crawl mode ON.

@TeresaLisbon It's fine he asks here, but I'd rather he not wait until after he already answered and gave a rather extended hint as to how he wanted us to respond. That's what I object to. Checking others for feedback, before deciding to answer. That's totally fine with me, and I welcome everyone, not just a mod, to check that out here too, if they are in doubt.

@amWhy Yes,right. If the question was asked before the answer came in, I'd definitely have said no, it's not worth it. But the answer was long and correct, my only response to this situation was the comment I wrote then.

@Peter Yes, most probably. But I'm not certain, and I wouldn't know which one to search form.
@TeresaLisbon I understand.

5:02 PM
this is another PSQ where a request for clarification is made in comments, but there are some answers before any response from asker.

@ParamanandSingh Closed, and open for deletion.
@TeresaLisbon One more downvote and one more close vote = open for deletion.

@amWhy Thanks.
I have evidence for a phenomena I call "desperation". It's a situation where a user doesn't visit the site for a few days, and then comes in with a spurt of six or seven answers in one day, five of which are to PSQs.
It happened a few days ago, and I'm smelling one more instance that will occur in a few days.
@ParamanandSingh FIVE answers is ridiculous. Should we do a coordinated downvote on the answers?
Or perhaps they will go with the question, but how do we inform these users they did something wrong? If the question just disappears, then they are informed and don't care. If they are downvoted it will hit harder (hopefully).

@TeresaLisbon: ridiculous indeed, but I usually go for deletion of question (which ultimately leads to deletion of answers and the associated rep).

@ParamanandSingh Great , let us hope we can get rid, not too far now.

What I find difficult to believe is that don't these people get bored by answering same questions repeatedly many times over

5:10 PM
@ParamanandSingh I swear! I don't touch these questions with a rod anymore, I stopped after about 35K I think, although I still continued to answer challenging questions I left the ones that I knew were duplicates cent percent. Then I stopped that as well, the choice is very specific as you saw today.

Duplicate? math.stackexchange.com/q/4102149/42969 asks for the inverse of a concrete 3x3 matrix. Should we close this as a duplicate of math.stackexchange.com/q/744378/42969 which explains the general principle (using the Cayley Hamilton theorem)?

@MartinR I would , except unfortunately I saw the OP say that they are a high school student. Cayley-Hamilton is not discussed in high school. In fact ,recalling such a question from high school, the answer IS to compute these quantities $A^{-1}$ and $A^2$. That is reflected in the marks it carries when you get it in a test.
The Cayley-Hamilton theorem is not a high school shortcut, so I don't think that the answer will address this student's concern and the high school background they are from.

But the current (two) answers do nothing but applying that theorem.

@MartinR Then they are not answering the question. The up voters have not recognized the context of the question. If the answerer writes the statement for CH in high school and uses it, they are not going to get marks. On the other hand, with some speed, I think one can do this question in 10 minutes with brute force.
And it will be worth 5 marks , or at least 4 marks in an 80 mark test which has a duration of 3 hours. I've seen this, going a step further I solved a very similar question in an exam about 8 years ago, which had the marking scheme I mention.
This is the fault of the answerers, but they can rectify it by coming back, and editing their answer. I hope the OP leaves a polite comment saying that this won't be of use in an exam they are giving. I'm extremely sure of this opinion, although I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

@TeresaLisbon Are you suggesting an answerer to to the question brute forth, for the OP to turn in as their own work, or encouraging the OP to brute force it?
@TeresaLisbon O f D

5:24 PM
@amWhy Thanks
@amWhy For starters on that post, a comment "If you are expecting to get this in an exam and are therefore solving it, then will you be allowed to use Cayley-Hamilton? If not, then are you looking for the best ways to compute $A^2$ and $A^{-1}$? I would not expect Cayley-Hamilton to be part of your syllabus" or something like that. Let's see the OP's response. I don't think this can be closed as a duplicate, if the OP thinks that Cayley-Hamilton doesn't do his/her job.

I agree that the OP should be asked to clarify. But I don't think any answerer should do it entirely for the asker, unless the asker includes context. It seems they though of the second option you asked, and I think the OP should be encouraged to pursue that, and that it does not read like a dupe, given the context they provided.

And both answerers need to realize that the level of the OP needs to be taken into account, and that's what teaching is about, realizing the level of the OP. They may not mention it, but look at the author's previous QnA : it's clear that they are from high school, just a year or so before college.
@amWhy Yes, I agree regarding that, but I should still be prepared for the OP that is in front of me, and if I have history available I should use it. I say it again, so much goes into answering a question, and one simply cannot write a satisfactory answer in such a short time without having the complete context and exact question available.

@TeresaLisbon I agree; users sometime want to use a sledgehammer to squash an ant, to impress other users, or because they no longer remember what highschool math is like.

@amWhy Exactly, absolutely right.
@ParamanandSingh Since you use a mobile, your thoughts on what's written here?

5:43 PM
@TeresaLisbon Last one is now deletable

@rschwieb Thanks

@TeresaLisbon: Initially I was not aware of the fact that one can use raw latex query on approach0 and it was pain to use their site. Now I just open a Firefox tab, switch to desktop mode option and use approach0 with raw query. The overall process takes only slightly longer than that on a laptop/desktop

@ParamanandSingh Excellent. Then you could inform that user there, if you wish to. I hope it makes a difference.

Ok let me do that

6:16 PM
DONE!

6:26 PM
What does PSQ mean

@TeresaLisbon Up for deletion now.

@Iamaperson Problem Statement Question: Meaning like it reads like a copy and paste of a problem on an assignment sheet, or an exercise at the end of a section/chapter of a text, which includes no effort, or citation and level of the student, or explanation as to where the asker is stuck, etc.

@amWhy ohhh thank you

@TeresaLisbon Needs one more downvote to be open for deletion.

@ParamanandSingh Approach0 got a new web interface (last year in November) and since then it can be used from mobile devices. It is still a bit more work than on the desktop (also because "Show Math As -> TeX Commands” does not work on my iPhone) but since then I have found quite a lot of duplicates on the phone.

@amWhy I would be happy to respond to your critique, but I really don't appreciate the disrespectful tone. If I were not a moderator, would you use that same tone?
"It is a somewhat poor question" I agree. My exact word was "mediocre".
"because it is clearly an algebra (as in algebra-precalc question), it is a rational expression, so even if the OP forgot 'y=$ as a prefix' it is not a polynomial." I don't think that this is clear. My guess is that you are correct, and this seems to be the most likely scenario, but it is not obvious. The asker could have been more clear (this is part of what makes the question mediocre).
" instead of answerers trying to 'guess the context and cover all possibilities'." I explicitly did *not* try to guess the context. Rather, I gave an answer which attempted to explain all of the possible contexts. My gut feeling about such things is to let a student know that there is a world of context, and that the meaning of a particular phrase may be context-dependent.

A simple yes/no answer might be sufficient (given more context from the asker), but I think that it is more useful to the asker to understand that the answer is *not* a simple yes/no, and that context might change the
@amWhy Like I said in my original comment here, I answered the question because it had already attracted poor answers. I could not find a duplicate, and the question seemed to be of sufficient quality to merit an answer. I invited people to close the question, but asked for a heads up.
I think that the question itself is a natural question, and that it is the kind of thing, in one sense or antoher, which should be answered on this website. I would be happy to write a new question which seeks to ask about the same idea, but felt that answering someone else's mediocre-but-not-entirely-trash question was a better alternative.
I won't cry if the question is deleted, and I would not have asked for feedback if I had no doubts about the quality of the question.

Note, as this comment from lulu states, there's been at least 4 questions which have been very similar posted by different users so it may be part of an ongoing contest. Despite the OP to this question stating "Part of an IB past paper question. I have my math hl exam tomorrow ...", I'm also concerned it's actually part of an ongoing contest.

In any event, I have a meeting which starts in five minutes.

I haven't flagged any of the questions because I'm not sure if that is the correct thing to here as I have no evidence it's part of an ongoing contest. Perhaps someone here can take a look to see if they can possibly better determine what might be going on. Thanks.

10:19 PM
@XanderHenderson I do too, @Xander. I had no problem with you answering it. I believe the question was a natural question. What I objected to is why you bothered to seek input here, was it to discourage downvotes on the question? If it was for feedback about your answer, given your defense of it just now to me, you believe you did the right thing, hence I wondered why you asked the question here? To solicit agreement not to close the question, or solicit praise for you, and upvotes?
I doubt the latter. But given your certainty that you did the right thing, why did you ask for input??? You wanted others input, but not mine??? I just do not get it.
@XanderHenderson No problem, I see you have a meeting going on. np. I've gotten accustomed to waiting to hear back, so please do, after your meeting, eat, relax, chill, and get a good night's sleep.

10:42 PM
Thanks for stopping in here, @Xander. We really do love having you here regularly!

11:09 PM
@amWhy I said
>
That was my motivation---either to get reassurance that my assessment that the question was mediocre-but-answer-worthy was correct or to have folk here close and delete the question (at which point I would write a new question/answer pair).
It was neither to solicit agreement not to close, nor to to solicit upvotes.
Is there some reason that my statements should not be taken at face value?

@XanderHenderson I understand, but I didn't vote to close or delete, and I don't have time to keep an eye on whether it gets closed, in order to report to you, and I doubt anyone else does either.

@amWhy I followed the the question---I will be alerted if it is closed. However, it is often the case that the last close voter (or delete voter) in this room will post a message saying as much when they cast their vote.

Please don't edit posts so that I am chasing a moving target. Most of us can't do that. If I'm answering, you may already render my response meaningless, when you go back and edit what I am replying to.

11:14 PM
I am sorry that I was not clear about that---I could have expended more words to explain.
@amWhy The only edit I have made in the last day is to correct a spelling mistake, which was done within the 2 minute edit window that most users have. (for your information, worth -> worthy).
I am sorry that this creates a moving target---I did not realize that fixing a typo was going to cause problems.

@XanderHenderson Yes, I get what you are referring to. Xander, it is okay. But I was responding and I saw motion in one of your comments without seeing what it was. Please try not to be so defensive. I will ban myself from this chatroom for a week if it will help you. Would you like me to do that? I'd be perfectly happy to do that, because I will go out of my way to not step on your toes. Just say the word, and this chatroom is yours for a week.
And there is no further reason for you to try to publicly try to defend yourself here. It is okay that you did so, but please be done doing so. If you have anymore to say to me, like agreeing to have me ban myself a week to ensure you sick around here, tell me elsewhere, and you know where to do that. I'll permanently ban myself from this room, if that's what you want. Heck, all I do these days is acquiesce. Please respond elsewhere, because this matter is no longer on topic in this chat.

amWhy has removed amWhy from the list of this room's owners.

^^^ There, @Xander, you should feel much more comfortable at least being present here, when you have to time. Treat this room and the mainstay of users who will continue here with respect, and as colleagues, please. Let me know if I need to leave the site, to make your life even more grand!
Sorry @quid. I did not mean to type your name in my last ping.

@amWhy thanks for the clarification. I was indeed quite perplexed how I got involved.

I promised @Xander that I would leave the chat to help him meet his needs, and if either you or him find my presence on this site "too stressful for you", say the word, and I'll be gone in an instant.

@amWhy oh come on, you know we'd miss you instantly. :-)

@quid I appreciate you saying that. But if I'm causing so much ire in mods, Xander, and Asaf, and years ago, Arthur Fischer, then I'd rather leave that kiss butt.
In any case, I respect this chatroom too much to continue this discussion in this room.

Maybe I miss something but Xander does not seem irate above.
:57653368 sure, and I need to leave anyway. (Sorry I actually better leave, you know what time it is.) See you!

@vitamind It isn't. :/

@vitamind it's gone (converted to comment, Xander beat me to it). Really leaving now.
