Q: What does this notation about ranges mean?

user3855929This might be a very basic question but I ran into this notation in a numerical methods book Let $$g ∈ C[a, b]$$ be such that $$g(x) ∈ [a, b], \forall x \in [a, b]$$ What does the $$C[a, b]$$ mean?

I suggested three dupe targets, one of which is really only a viable dupe target because I answered a question with perhaps more detail than is really necessary.
In any event, all four of the questions involved (see the comments below the above linked question) are interrelated. One should probably be left open while the others are closed as duplicates.
But, since I answered one of the questions and therefore have a vested interest in the outcome, I am not going to cast any more closure votes.

I don't think that this answer is at all useful. Yet it managed to garner three upvotes. I am confused. :\
The question to which the above cited answer is attached is also not all that great (and subsequent edits are, I think, not really improving things).
