@BillDubuque I don't understand why you didn't post your answer as a CW (as @JyrkiLahtonen did). Would you mind to elaborate on that a bit?

@user170039 I'm here to teach mathematics - not to play games.

user131753
@BillDubuque Exactly. Then why don't you simply do that by only posting an answer and making it CW (since you are not, if I understand you correctly, interested in earning more rep)?

@user170039 I'm not interested in wasting any further time discussing puerile matters like rep.

user131753
Now it is of course up to you whether you want to be interested in "wasting" any further time discussing this. But unless you make it clear about your motives, it is unlikely that your arguments will make sense if people perceive your actions to be contradictory to what you say. So I think it is better to make things clear. Am I clear?

user131753
@BillDubuque To be precise, we are not discussing "puerile matters like rep" (at least the intention of my question was not that). I simply want to know the reason behind a specific action of yours which apparently (at least to me) is contradictory to (some of) what you said earlier.

4:11 AM
@user170039 Again, I have no interest in such nonsense. Please don't ping me on subjects on which I have no interest.

user131753
@BillDubuque I think that sums up your response then. You lose my support.

@user170039 I'm not here for anyone's "support". Rather, I am here to teach mathematics.

user131753
@BillDubuque Then it would be better to tell me an exhaustive list of the "subjects" regarding which you have no interest so that I don't accidentally ping you.

@user170039 Have a good evening.

Can I request the person/persons who is(are) starring my comments above to remove the stars? It is probably going to be someone among the following people so I am pinging all of them @BillDubuque, @YuiToCheng, @JyrkiLahtonen, @Makyen.

user131753
Just in case there is someone else who was starring by above comments, I will be requesting the room owners to remove the stars. For that purpose I am pinging @XanderHenderson, @user21820, @MartinSleziak, @TheSimpliFire, @Lord_Farin.

@user170039 Of course it was not me. But don't worry - I don't pay any attention to those silly stars (see the above discussion).

5:10 AM
@user170039 If a room owner removes stars on your comments, some people would accuse them of being biased, so your request is better taken to the moderators. I'm not the one who starred your comments, and I see no reason to selectively unstar your comments.
I have no problems with unstarring most of the recently uselessly starred messages, leaving only the constructive ones, but I don't want to do it while there are still people waiting to pounce on me for every possible action I can take.
I would encourage other room owners and moderators (e.g. @quid) to add their opinions explicitly (not by starring).
And I'm hardly the only one doing unstarring around here, so I don't claim to speak for the other room owners who are doing it.

@user21820 @user170039 ok, regarding your earlier pings, there have been mass deletions and a lot of dialog between then and now, so I'm not really able to make heads or tails of what you were asking without context. Can you summarize?

6:39 AM
@user170039 I apologize for starring some of your comments. I should have known better, but gave into a temptation. When your request reached me, it was unfortunately too late. Apparently a star can be cancelled only within a 5 minute window (like all other votes), and I missed that opportunity.

@JyrkiLahtonen A solution to this would be adding you to the room owners. (Although it's unclear whether it would be a good move considering recent comments and complaints - whether they have some merit or not.)

@MartinSleziak I think recently I have been drawn into too many skirmishes here. That would definitely not be a good idea.

7:40 AM
@user21820 I do not really understand your reasoning here. It was I who explicitly asked for the stars to be removed. I think for the room owners that is enough "reason" to "selectively unstar" my comments regardless of whether "some people" accuses them of "being biased" or not. But anyway since the stars has already been removed the issue is settled I think.

user131753
I also think personally that it is not a good idea to bother the mods for something specifically that the room owners can easily do. But I could also be wrong.

user131753
@JyrkiLahtonen No problem. I just requested the stars to be removed because they were not in my view particularly useful (although may be of temporary interest for to some people).

user131753
In fact I hoped that if I could get Bill to get a precise response regarding the issue which you have so aptly pointed out, that would facilitate a step towards the compromise of which Bill was talking earlier. Such a response would definitely be interesting but unfortunately I found nothing of that sort in our earlier exchange @JyrkiLahtonen.

user131753
(I didn't ping Bill above since it is not clear to me whether he would be interested to get pinged regarding this issue or not.)

user131753
@AlexanderGruber Please read the following comments by Bill Dubuque, (1) and (2).

They more or less summarize the issue.

Understood @user170039. And I agree that some kind of a compromise is needed. A part of the problem is that some users see CRUDE activists as extremists when in fact they are defenders of a compromise that has served the site for a number of years now. Of course, we should also seek to analyze why the anti-CRUDE movement has also been gaining some traction lately in spite of the policy being relatively old. Part of the reason is that CRUDE has made it easier to jointly enforce that policy.

Anyway, having a compromise would have some advantages over the alternative of a prolonged fight after which some kind of a thermal equilibrium is reached (when the participants know to choose their battles wisely).
Another problem is to bring new users up to speed. Those who are unfamiliar with the history of this debate not unnaturally have a hard time appreciating that the current status quo (if you can call it that) actually is a compromise as opposed to some dogma cherished by chanting monks.
But, all that discussion should take place in meta posts, where people can upvote and downvote (whereas here or in meta comments we can only "star"/upvote). Sorry about going off-topic.
The population visiting this room is too small for us to reliable gauge the relative supports of various opinions by counting stars. Unfortunately I cannot offer better alternatives (other than taking it to meta visited by more people).

@JyrkiLahtonen: I will be commenting on this issue further in Math Meta Chat as I think that we are already off topic here.

1:37 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen I am unfamiliar with the circumstances of the compromise. Is there a meta post or chat record which summarizes?

1:52 PM
@JyrkiLahtonen If you sincerely seek a compromise then it is absolutely essential to stop the vicious ad hominem attacks on those whose views differ from yours. It is impossible to discuss any issue here without being barraged by your bizarre off-topic personal attacks. This behavior has demolished meta in the past and will do the same here if it is not reigned in.
