@JohnMa I took care of those. (ie 30,31,32)

11:34 AM
@amWhy @XanderHenderson @ZacharySelk: Very misleading answers: 1, 2, 3.
@JohnMa: Wow that's a really long list!

11:46 AM
@JohnMa Left with 9. I gave 18 a pass because of the phrasing of the inquiry and the last line in the question suggesting that some thought has gone into it. I think 24 should be reopened; it's not well asked but it's clear what the mathematical confusion is. 29 is not exemplary but the answer is worse; I don't know how it got 6 upvotes...
@XanderHenderson It turns out that the asker did respond in the comments.
@MartinR (Assumed) new user, so I guess wait a while before deletion?

We can all come back and yell at John Ma when we run out of delete votes later in the day!
:-)

=)
I hardly reach the limit though.

@user21820 Neither do I; but if I do today, I'll blame John Ma! :P

3:08 PM
@ZacharySelk Wow copying the answer from the previous question without attribution! That's against the site copyright policy I think.

@user21820 For what it's worth, I agree with this assessment about question 18, which is why I didn't vote for deletion there. I would also add that it seems like a genuine curiosity. I don't know if I feel this strongly enough to vote for reopen, though. Maybe it needs improvement.

@AloizioMacedo I didn't think 18 should be reopened. It's 24 that is better.

3:23 PM
@user21820 Yes, I understand. I am talking about 18 exclusively, saying that although I don't know if it is worthy of deletion, I don't know if it is worthy of undeletion either.

@AloizioMacedo Oh at the time I looked at it it was not deleted. I'll leave it to others to make a call on it.

Regarding 24, maybe you could give it a shot to edit and improve the question (if you are willing, of course). I think it would make it more attractive for reopening.

3:40 PM
@AloizioMacedo Not today haha..

3:53 PM
I decided to give a shot at 18. I've retagged 18 and attempted to improve it a bit. I couldn't manage to change the last line to something more comprehensible without feeling I am changing its content, though. Please, consider reopening 18.

@AloizioMacedo First it needs to be undeleted. Still looks like someone wanting others to do their work for them, so matter how polished the edit. I want to see the OP's edit and effort/contribution, not yours.

@amWhy Yes, sorry for the inaccuracy.

@AloizioMacedo Not a problem...mainly my confusion until I clicked on the post.

3 hours later…
6:39 PM
@amWhy @AloizioMacedo Regarding 18: the question is 4 years old, and the original poster is likely gone for good. Is there any harm in putting words in the OPs mouth to make it better? If not, I suggest that someone go for it. Otherwise, I'm not sure that the question is that great, and I'm happy to see it remain deleted.

I don't think anyone's put words in the asker's mouth. I edited it too, to improve. But I insist that the asker's bear the responsibility of improving their posts. That's not to say there aren't instances where others can do it for them. Next time, Xander, when you're fed up with a PSQ, from an asker who's asked a series of PSQ's previously, maybe I'll tell you: I'll edit the post so that it stays open, and maybe go back to reopen all their other posts to, after I fix them so they ...
look like questions I think are worth being on this site. So don't bother posting any post asking anyone to consider closing a PSQ, because maybe you should be rewriting the question for the OP, instead.
Oops, 18 isn't one I edited. 18 is okay by me. But I do recall you voted to delete the post, @Xander, as I did. So are you trying to convince yourself that it's okay for any reconstruction of the question? That would be okay, if it makes you happy. All I said was that my preference has always been to "see an OP's edit, effort, improvement when a question they asked is closed." Is that forbidding occasions of exceptions.

@amWhy Perhaps I wasn't being clear: there is at least one person here (@AloizioMacedo) who seems to think that 18 is a valuable enough question to keep around. However, Aloizio "couldn't manage to change the last line to something more comprehensible without feeling I am changing its content, though." My comment was in response to that---the question is old, the OP is gone, so if one really thinks that the question is worth keeping around, is there any harm done by putting words into the...
...original asker's mouth?
Also, I've had nothing to do with that question. I neither voted to close nor delete it.

6:54 PM
Oops, I referred to a different post, sorry naming you as a deleter of 18, @Xander. If Aloizio wants to ask a new question with the words he'd really like the question to read, he can do so. He can even link to the deleted post, as a historical note. Then his name will appear as the asker of the revised, slightly different question, consistent with his voice.
Sorry, @AloizioMacedo. I see I just assumed you to be male. But I do not know the gender associated with Aloizio, and so I apologize profusely if I assumed wrongly.
@JohnMa I blame you for my current status today of being out of delete votes! :P :)

7:07 PM
@AloizioMacedo For 18, I guess you can make that more interesting by restricting $f$ to be $f:\mathbb Z\to \mathbb Z$. Then in some case the formula provided in the answer does not work.
@amWhy Summer has finally come and I have more time now. I will post more request here.

@JohnMa I hope you know I was joking when I said "I blame you!"
@JohnMa I like your four links (or fewer) per comment format/style.

8:05 PM
@all In a personal assessment, I don't think the question is very interesting either (mathematically speaking). But I think it was a genuine curiosity by the asker due to the way it is written (I can be wrong about this, of course). This is why I think it may be elligible to undeletion. Under this POV, I think that simple improvements may be enough so it can be kept.
Although in general I agree that we should leave to the OPs such editions and/or teach them why they are needed, I think that this particular instance would not benefit much from requiring so. The edits were minor and did not change the content (and also we have the fact that the question is relatively old).

I hate to point this one out, but the answer here is just wrong, and despite two upvoted comments from other users, the answerer hasn't attempted to correct it.
@AloizioMacedo I do not mind your edits, @Aloizio, they were indeed minor.

8:58 PM
@XanderHenderson Yeah, just like the answer I link in my last comments is from a high rep user, so no one wants to do anything about it.

9:09 PM
@XanderHenderson So if at least one person here wants to keep that post around, we should let it be?

9:26 PM
@XanderHenderson OP has added his/her thoughts after your discussion at the end of the question.

@GNUSupporter You should know better than to add comments below friend's posts like: "+1!"
@XanderHenderson i dunn did what i can.

Ugh... if you simply vote to close and delete, you get **** for not being welcoming to new users. If you attempt to give friendly advice, then someone else comes along and gives you **** for being unwelcoming to new users. How **** are we supposed to help new users?

@XanderHenderson If they know they get a rise out of us, they're going to continue to play that game. Here we have a user GNU, who straddles both sides of the fence, dishes it out (closes, downvotes), then turns around pretending to be all new users' friend.

cough

@ArtOfCode Here's a tissue!

Do you need a cough drop, @ArtOfCode, or is there something that you object to?

@amWhy why thank you
@XanderHenderson no, the tissue was all I needed, but thanks for the offer :)

@AnyModerator: I flagged several comments on this question. There is likely a productive conversation to be had about how that question can be improved, but the comment thread is wandering off-topic.

@amWhy I've done my best.

@GNUSupporter Every comment template (look next time to refresh your memory) informs us to not add comments like "+1 (for whatever reason)", hence I flagged, hence it was deleted.

@GNUSupporter Not from anyone's activity within the last 3+ years! And it's not a good habit to learn, even when it's meant with only the best of intentions; trust me!
@XanderHenderson Indeed, and one user goes so far as to link to a completely off-topic thread which does not help the asker improve their question. When users work to help new askers circumvent the standards of how to ask a question...
...that's an SE site sabotage.

I refer you to Aloizio Macedo's answer to "Is CRUDE healthy", in particular, the **BOLDED CAPITALISED TEXT**.

https://math.meta.stackexchange.com/a/28406/290189

@GNUSupporter Already been there, done that.
But @GNU I value your thoughts, you're just going to need to express them, without resorting to other's words and irrelevant links.

@amWhy Why is the link irrelevant? It explains why ArtOfCode cough.

@GNUSupporter Already been there, done that. Start thinking, or at least speaking, for yourself.
@GNUSupporter And did you notice how polite and kind I was to offer ArtOfCode a tissue? Niceness is not meant just to express to new users. It is also something to work on when interacting with your peers.

@amWhy cough cough
Practice what you preach ;)

@ArtOfCode Ahhh, I think it goes the other way around, too. Please stop targeting four or five users for not being nice, when others sit and slap those four or five users in the face, insult them, and you stand back waiting for one of those four or five users to react, upon which you, today anyway, cough. You should be choking up coughing with the kind of mudslinging going around on this site, and in this room, and not primarily, in the last two days, from the 4/5 users you seem fixated on.
@ArtOfCode Here's a tissue and a cough drop, and a drink of nice cool water.

10:53 PM
Thing is... I'm not. It's usually the same bunch of people who I say things to, but that's not because I'm targeting them; it's because they're the people doing the things that flout the policies that I'm here to uphold. Now, if you can point me to other places where people have not been nice, I will happily do something about it. That's my job. What I'm not here to do is to solve the systemic issues that this site faces - that's down to you guys as the site's community.
I appreciate that that's what y'all are trying to do here, but... you gotta do it in a way that walks on the right side of the lines.
(And believe me, I know how frustrating it can be when you see user after user making the same mistakes that you're trying to educate them away from. But when that gets too much and you can't deal with another one without snapping at them... that's when it's time to take a break. Whether that's 5 minutes or 5 months, doesn't matter - whatever gets you back to tip-top and able to offer a welcoming and guiding hand again.)

@amWhy How are "those four or five users" "insulted"?

@GNUSupporter What do you mean? Actually, we're in the Pollyanna mode right now, to help ArtOfCode get over their cough. Peace be with you, and all of your kin, and all of your friends, and throughout the world!!

Is it a game that when a moderator cough to three the room got frozen?

Heh, I like that

@ArtOfCode Unfortunately, you've lost sight of what's happening here, and your second paragraph, isn't really relevant, either. But I'll applaud you, and pretend you know me and everyone else on this site better than we know ourselves. After all, I'm in Pollyanna mode! Happy happy happy! Peace be with you, ArtOfCode, and your kin, and your friends, and all of MSE, and all of SE, and all throughout each and every nation of the world!

11:05 PM
@amWhy What is it that I've lost sight of?

Anyone want a lollipop?

@amWhy We are required to show good intent towards new users. Downvotes are anonymous, not even moderators know who casted them, so you are suggesting something that can't be verified.

11:33 PM
@GNUSupporter Your close votes can be. And I've seen you be not so nice. As each of us, even ArtOfCode, have been on one one, probably more occasions, been not so nice. Time for a lollipop... very sweet, very yummy, very happy. Practice what we all preach, word of the day!!

11:53 PM
@ArtOfCode The particular incident that has started off the most recent conversation here is this question. My interpretation is that I offered polite advice to a new questioner, then got slapped down by a high rep user who (1) told me that my advice was not necessary (and probably wrong, anyway), and (2) bemoaned the fact that I had standards.
This was then followed by comments (which have since been deleted) discussing how unwelcoming someone was begin. I can only assume that they were directed at me, since the other user in the thread we defending the original question as-is.
I then complained about that here (in a slightly rude but censored manner), thus earning a cough.
That's my side of the story... can you tell me where I have erred?
Anywho, gonna go make dinner now.
Laters, all!
o/

@XanderHenderson Or they coughed at my reply to you. I really can't tell from them, anymore, what their grievance is, and why they target only a select few.
@XanderHenderson I might order a pizza. I'm hungry too!
