I'm at about 1900 right now so shouldn't be too long until I have more to offer in that department. Review queue's at 2k and i know martin said in certain circumstances I can do more than "make reccomendations".

@user21820 Yes, there are still the recreational lot out there though (like myself). Frequently they will buy a txt and then go through the HW probs on their own. So one needs to be careful as they don't have the same resources as the "cheaters". Admittedly, they are in the minority, hence my phrasing of the @everybody post I made in here yesterday

@DavidReed @user21820 As I attempted to allude to yesterday, I don't think that the motivation of a questioner should really matter. Either the question is a good one, or it is not. Typically, PSQ-style questions are no good. They are generally too specific, and of relevance only to the person actually asking the question.

Why assume bad intent when one can vote down a bad question without any such assumption?

I think I was initially attracted to this site because I'd google for a proof of something and it would be here. The tinier corollaries that tend to be in the HW probs for proof courses. Then when I saw one that was wrong and tried to comment on it. I was perturbed I had insufficient to do so, so I decided I'd work up to 50 and then eventually got hooked

I agree with your statement for math overflow certainly. I'd have to think harder for this site. Personally, if someone is struggling to understand something and legitimately wants to learn what I type up, and not just copy it down for an exam, I'm happy to help them.

@DavidReed I am happy to help them. But I don't think that MSE is the forum for that kind of help. This is supposed to be a searchable repository of well-stated questions with relevant answers.

You make a valid point. I don't think of it as a chegg like site

folk who want help with their homework should find a forum for that purpose, or GO TO OFFICE HOURS!

is basically a hw help site that has written out answers to all questions asked in a large library of txts

For instance, every HW problem in Gallian's algebra book is completely worked out on that site

They are not vetted though and are sometimes incorrect. Kind of use at your own risk sort of thing. It requires a monthly fee. I found it quite useful for physics.

There ought to be a place on the interwebs for open-source-style homework help, with, perhaps, an SE kind of vibe, but MSE is not that place :\

well, maybe not indisputably---I ended up with more than 100 students in a four hour final exam review office hours last quarter; and only about 30 of those were mine :\

I spent probably 10 hrs a week in one professors office, continued even after I was done with his class. We never even discussed the curriculum I was always asking about peripheral stuff and showing him easier proofs etc. Quite frankly I'm amazed he never kicked me out

Yes I was going to mention certain schools, especially community colleges, office hours tend to be more like extra classes than 1 on 1. Especially for the lower lvl courses like Cal I/II

indeed; at big schools, there are often hundreds of students enrolled in a single class; office hours are a nightmare

this quarter, I'm doing them all online

I'm hoping this keeps it manageable for everyone

@amWhy nah, not yet. I first want to set up a useful definition of the cheese derivative. The differential fork definition of an alternate derivative is... nice but it isn't exactly malleable.

I'm all for constructive criticism, but would rather have it done the way you have, pointing it out in answer with his own alternative reccomendations. I am upvoting your answer.

@amWhy thanks. It certainly will be an uphill battle from here on out though. The parts I have left to finish will be the most challenging to formalize. I.E. FUN STUFF

I don't think I have any math txts less than 200 pages. The exceptions being "A primer of Lebesgue Integration" which is arguably my 2nd favorite of all the txts I have used and about the size of an ipad mini ;). My favorite one is "Mathematical thinking: Problem solving and proofs" which ironically is short as well.

The former I also like because he formulates the integral in terms of upper/lower/Riemann sums instead of using simple functions, then outlines a proof of their equivalence in an exercise.

This problem needs to go.. Seems its asker has asked a number of questions on MSE that are part of an application to a summer program. Needs two more close votes, (and downvotes, to open for deletion upon its closure.

@amWhy Downvoted. If the claim that multiple problems are in his history is verifiable his account should likely be banned.

@DavidReed I agree; I also flagged, since the application problem set had not yet been posted when Jyrki unlocked the question. The OP had eight questions as of yesterday or the day before, but some he has since deleted, and others deleted by users.
