Q: Show that if $(xy)^n = (x)^n(y)^n$ then $xy=yx$.

SmoKerShow that if $(xy)^n = (x)^n(y)^n$ then $xy=yx$. (Please don't use induction method)

This PSQ deserves to be closed and downvoted, but the answers may be interesting enough to warrant keeping.

Both questions are somewhat interesting, both question can be solved using by looking at the number in base 2.
It seems that Approach0 is down at the moment, which makes looking for duplicates a bit harder.

@MartinSleziak Aww. Actually I think finding duplicates is a futile job haha..
@Jack: Have you yet taken a look at this? It makes 2 serious errors in 1. Firstly it implies that you can have subtraction of set sizes. Secondly it says that infinity minus infinity can be 1 (in fact, it can be anything). If you agree then we'd appreciate an extra downvote so that it can be deleted. =)

@user21820 Well, as you probably noticed, looking for duplicates and closing duplicates is big part of what I do on the site.
But my life as a whole can be described as futile, so there is no surprise that many people see my activities on the site as such.

7:14 AM
@MartinSleziak Sorry I don't mean to imply anything about people who do it, since whatever you do will improve the site, and many crumbs make a cake. It's just that we don't have a high enough fraction of the Math SE users who do it.

7:45 AM
@user21820 I am not offended or anything like that. (Sorry if it sounded that way.) I just saw the opportunity to post partly funny and partly pessimistic remark. Anyway, as not to distract from the actual purpose of this room, we can continue this elsewhere - if there's something to add.

@user21820 Just did it. Here is another one: math.stackexchange.com/q/2111603/9464

@Jack Thank you! @amWhy @SimplyBeautifulArt: It's ready for deletion now! =)

@user21820 @Did I am not sure whether closing as a duplicate is the right choice. One question is about value of the sum, the one which was closed is asking whether or not it is rational.

1:28 PM
OTOH it was quite likely that the question was about to be closed for lack of context, anyway... shrug

@MartinSleziak I think I voted to close for lack of context, not as duplicate. Perhaps it doesn't show, or perhaps I clicked wrongly.

@user21820 I think we discussed this before. Only one close reason shows. (This case might be different because it was using dupehammer, but for example if 2 users vote to close as off-topic and 3 users to close as a duplicate, than all 5 names will be displayed near the message that it was closed as duplicate.)

I see. I can never remember the tiny details of the workings of SE haha..

Yes, we have talked about this here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/39048469#39048469 Or maybe link to beginning of that exchange is better: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/39048317#39048317

@Jack x.x How does a question even reach -11?

@SimplyBeautifulArt I think it's a combination of 3 factors: (1) Commanding "Show that ..."; (2) Demanding "Please don't use ..."; (3) User name = "SmoKer".
I didn't even get the opportunity to decrease the score.

@user21820 No no, that's not what I meant. How does a question survive long enough to get net 11 downvotes?

It was closed the same day it was asked, but nobody deleted and a rolling PSQ gathers some downvotes.

@SimplyBeautifulArt I guess that frequently asked question in tag cubic-questions. For example, I see there: Is there anything like “cubic formula”? and How to solve cubic equations with given coefficients? Perhaps they are along the lines of what you meant. (Also since the above is deleted, it's moot now.)
@SimplyBeautifulArt IIRC there is some time limit before you can cast delete vote. (Although users with high reputation do not have to wait.)
> Users with reputation ≥ 10k can vote to delete questions that have been closed/on-hold for 48 hours.
> Users with reputation ≥ 20k are not subject to the 48-hour waiting period for deleting closed questions with a score of −3 or lower. They may also delete answers of score −1 or lower.
Both from the FAQ on deletion.

Q: $35 + 6 = 30 + 11$

Lojik OverloadI have a disagreement with regrouping and I was hoping someone with an open mind might help me understand or work with me on this. Essentially I was taught that $35+6 = 30+11$ because they both equal $41.$ I absolutely disagree with this! This is my explanation: A man has $35$ apples and he buys...

@Jack Am I allowed to vote to delete this?
Or shall we flag for possible moderator intervention?

@SimplyBeautifulArt I'm also thinking about it. I so want to delete it, but I'm only 90% confident it's a bad-faith/troll question.

Its also kinda old

user12692
Well, there are good comments and good answers there. I'm no sure about that.

Age should not matter when it comes to quality. However, indeed the first answer is a good one. Unfortunately the next two are lousy.

At the least, I'd like it locked

@SimplyBeautifulArt At least locked yea. But how about I just delete and see the reaction? =P

I mean, we could just ping DanielFischer

2:44 PM
I tell you what. I don't like the user's name and profile.
Off it goes...
You can still ping Daniel and he can undelete if he likes it.
In particular there are a couple things that stand out to me:
> Or do we just agree that math doesn't have to add up under real world stress?
> Education in the civilized world is like dog training.

Yeah, I'm fine with it
Actually, I'm curious. What keeps us from deleting all the most downvoted posts of all time?

user12692
This question just deleted might be a good example showing how "non-math" people could think about mathematics in a god-knows-what-is-going-on way. The question itself has some merit in the sense that such question usually relates to the foundation of mathematics. But I doubt that the asker realized this.

Q: $-25+55+(85+65)= 180$ or $120$ ?And Why?

Anuj MishraI mean this question can have both the anwers but which one is correct and why? $-25+205=180$ And $-30+150=120$ But which answer is correct ?

@SimplyBeautifulArt I think one can indeed deal with them one by one, why not?

@Jack Because there are many and are old
I think I'll write a meta post on it once I get home, lest one of you people have already done so

user12692
@SimplyBeautifulArt Good idea to write on meta for this.

@Jack This one is a clear-cut delete-candidate, showing zero effort.
There is no way to systematically evaluate the expression to get the wrong answer. One answerer even said "you have to willfully misquote the problem".
Okay. Here are my reasons for finally deciding to delete. The asker said "I mean this question can have both the anwers" [sic], and one of the answerers said "−(25+55)+(85+65) [...] evaluates to 120"...

Q: Can you provide an alternative formula for the minimum of two numbers?

Albert ZotkinToday I've done a wonderful discovery. I've found out that the following operation between two real numbers actually is the maximum of those two numbers: $$ \max(a,b) = \log(\log(\exp(\exp(a))) + \exp(\exp(b)))) $$ assuming "log" is the natural logarithm, another way to write this amazing result...

@Jack Why focus on questions/answers 6 months, 1 year and older? It's not a bad thing to do; but given the limited downvotes, close votes, delete votes any one user has available each day, I prioritize quick action wrt the most current problematic questions and answers, but also usually address a couple of older questions in a day.
