heh yeah problem is its too much like a car - drivers will expect it to behave like a car.
IE, do the speed limit and accelerate fast.

I dunno - it may be contentious, but in my experience bents are not significantly faster. At least my two unfaired ones.
You're doing roughly the same speed with leg effort only, no arms or upper body involved.
So I can chat away while riding the bent at a speed where I'd be out of breath on a road bike.
My commute is about the same length, but I'm a lot less sweaty on the bend. Its mostly the back where I rest on the seat and the rest is okay. We all know what a sweaty upright bike ride is like.

Velomobiles are supposed to be much faster on flat terrain
though I guess accelerating a >20kg vehicle would take some time and effort
I think in a velomobile Iā€™d like an electric assist, even if itā€™s just up to 25km/h

yeah - the recumbent is slower to accelerate, and takes longer to get to top speed. A short/medium sprint would always be taken by the road bike.
Traffic lights suck on a bent :)

@Criggie fairings make all the difference.
As a tandem you will cruise effortlessly at 50 km/h, at least as long as it's flat.
The wheels need to be covered though. Either discs and tighter wheel wells, or better fairings that cover the whole thing.

Many bike components at Decathlon (cassettes, for sure) are made by Microshift, but it's not clear that that extends to pedals.

yah it seems excessive. Labour is frequently the biggest single cost, but the thign about "only BB available was ceramic for $250 US" sounds like bullshit.
Unrelated - the local AA now officially support ebikes.
