@Rider_X totally - you can paste a URL to the image on a line of its own like this:
ooo that was a surprise
but you can't copy and paste an image as such - so post it to imgur or bookface or whatever then paste the link here

4:01 AM
there is the upload... button just next to send
just a proxy to imgur

4:19 AM
Nice - I never noticed

This was left after cleaning two new Shimano XT/Ultegra chains in mineral spirits. I was quite shocked.
Removed from the wrapper and placed in the jar. I didn't notice the debris until it settled out a day later. It is very fine particulate.

6:21 AM
yoinks - I should do the same next time I fit a new chain to my bikes.
Oh that reminds me
I upgraded my longdog project from a 7 speed to a 9 speed. The 7 speed chain seems to bind in the cassette now.
damn chain is about 135 links long though.
so I need TWO nine-speed chains to fit it.
Or do I file down the existing long chain on one side?

7:16 AM
@Criggie I think two new 9-speed chains unfortunately. Filing would take forever.

@Criggie, I can no longer recommend the bottle with valves tubeless helper

@alex Sorry I've missed the reference - what bottle do you mean?
@Rider_X Yeah - I fear that the pins would end up weakened too.

using a bottle to help seat tubeless tires

Downside is I'm doing it on the cheap
so I'll try the seven speed chain and if the concept of longer chainstays helps then I'll spend money on the bike.

as a pressurised reservoir for seating the beads

Searching for a rigid front fork with disk brake tabs.
@alex Ahh yes I remember now - was supposed to be an air dump
did it pop ?

blew the bottom out at 80psi
the shock pulled one of the valves right in
glad I was outside, was loud, but not deafening

yoinks!
Best stick with the cargo strap. Does that work on a bike's tubeless?
I've seen them used on car tyres

2 hours later…
2:16 PM
no idea? what do you do?
I think I'll just get a commercial reservoir now I've satisfied myself that it works

4 hours later…
6:29 PM
@alex only 80psi? I thought pop bottles were rated to at least 120 or 160 psi. How many cycles did the bottle go through? I had thought of trying the pop bottle hack, but instead decided just to opt for a commercial version as I had visions of it bursting at night and waking the family.

7:13 PM
Why does a reservoir help seating tubeless?

Rider: Imagine the force available to propel shards of plastic when it ruptures. It would cut skin for sure, and easily take out an eye
@gschenk tubeless sometimes needs a hand to get the beads out and pressing into the rim.
and a large PSSSSHHT of air can help it do that
more-so with a new tyre where the bead wants to be kinda collapsed together, compared to a used tyre that has conformed to the right shape over time.
that's how a cargo strap squashes the tyre and forces the bead out more.
