@AndyP I upvoted it because of the cadence bit. I figured OP has enough brain cells to disregard the hogwash about braking

@Criggie You mean you can’t press against your back? In a leg press even newbies can often press twice their body weight

yeah - but you can't use your arms, shoulders, back muscles, any part of your core.
its all legs.
you can't even balance with your body weight because you're sitting on it.
the only thing you can move quickly to adjust body weight is your head. So you telegraph your turn long before you start turning, and you can't push the bike around under you like you can with a wedgie :))
@Michael if you get the chance, try and ride one. Its a great way of feeling like a newbie all over again.
took me 10 minutes to ride more than 10 metres

7:30 AM
I’d love to, but they are so rare and expensive :(
even though they are supposedly really great

7:43 AM
I find that I get through the commute in about the same time as the road bike, but I'm less tired.
Downside, I can't carry much stuff on the bent - had to make a bag specifically for the work laptop and that's not ideal.
plus there's variances in the overall safety.

@Criggie can’t they usually fit two pannier bags?

Once someone sees me riding on the bent, they definitely notice. But being lower its much easier to "hide" behind a car. I've had a couple occasions where someone has turned across traffic in a hurry and only seen me at the last second.
No
You'd have to fit a special carrier rack for a start

@Criggie what if you had a 1m long tent pole sticking up with a white light in front and red light on the back at the tip?

I had one on the old bent that was cantilevered back from the seat, which was not ideal
I had fold-down topeak pannier bags but they interfered with the back fork
my current laptop bag hangs on the left, let me find a picture
Yeah I have a flagpole on both - without that it would be even worse
drivers don't expect that "flag" means anything so they discard the vision.

I’d imagine that a small (maybe flashing) light would catch more attention and have less drag
than one of those flags

7:54 AM
yeah but any light is going to have mass which means a bigger pole
RIght now I have a fibreglass aerial as a pole, it works well enough and still flaps about
Here's the newer bent
the whole rear of the frame is suspended so nothing can secure to the front and rear of the frame at the same time
a carrier off the upper "seatstay" would work but there's no cross bracing so it would have to be strong, which means heavy
the whole bike is already over 18 kilos
Here's the laptop bag - inside is a hard-sided box with laptop inside, and that is wrapped in a large plastic bag too.
can't put anything under the seat because there's "sag" and on a big bump the seat can be grazed by the rear tyre.
on the right hand side is the chain so even less space - on the right side I have a tube bag with tools and spare tubes inside.
And that's it for storage.

meh, that makes it much less attractive

8:14 AM
yeah - its not ideal
its very funny riding past a primary school though - the kids love it.
High school kids are too cool though
Can't wear a backpack of course, and even jersey pockets are useless. I have one shirt with pockets on the front, but that's not ideal either.
Still - one can't carry a lot on a race bike, and can't ride as fast on the shopper bike
so expectations need to be realistic. If you were in my city I'd offer you a test ride.

8:34 AM
Not possible to have dedicated racks? Like this one: nazca-ligfietsen.nl/blob/… ? Or yours is too low to accomodate such racks? (this example is taken for a 'bent with 2 700C wheels)

yeah - that grey one is 20" on the front and 26" rear. My other one is 26" both wheels, and suffers from heel-overlap.
There are so many more variants on frame shape and so on.

10:55 AM
So I was googling for hi viz vest/sash/lanyard whilst researching for the ironing goretex question.

Found this product. The world is a messed up place

Could be useful: google.com/maps/@45.7102242,8.6568153,3a,15.4y,42.7h,84.79t/… (the picture only shows 3 birds, but there can be more there)

11:14 AM
Eheheh there are so many possible things one might say to that.
I'm saying "good night" cos midnight just passed.

Sweet dreams. May they be full of reflective chickens

11:45 AM
telling me to dream of brightly coloured cocks ? Oooo-er!

:D

1 hour later…
12:53 PM
An SUV driver went to a farmer and apologised for running over the chicken in front of the farmhouse. The farmer went out looked and said dismissively: "Don't worry those aren't ours. We don't have any flat chicken."

@Criggie That boom though. You could put a lot of stuff in there. Marble collection, bulk oatmeal etc.

7:39 PM
Perhaps - but its all between your legs so there's not a lot of width.
Items would have to be on top or below - the sides are not available.
You can't really reach most of that area while riding, and a lot of it is in front of the wheel which moves the balance.... I felt a difference when putting the front light and gopro out at the BB.
@NathanKnutson have you ever ridden a recumbemt ?
I've never tried a unicycle :)

8:35 PM
@Criggie only a test ride after service/assembly type basis
and briefly on a friend's rans screamer
the first shop i worked at, we tried selling the burley koosah and i think one other burley model, which were nice bikes but kinda suffered from being made in the US so the frames were nice and the parts hung on them were garbage to hit a price point
and i've handled special orders for a couple sun ones over the years
i like a lot of things about recumbents but overall i like being able to take road bikes where they're not supposed to go
personally

8:51 PM
-grin- I know what you mean... there's something about keeping up with a full squish MTB when you're just on some rubboishy old road bike with no suspension other than your legs and your skill
