@Duga Yep... thats a constructive comment. And no, its too broad.

Maybe it's still a better fit for programmers, I'm not sure, but it actually seems in the flavor of many questions that I've seen on this one. — Chris Beck 42 secs ago

huh, today I learned some people use "STL" to refer to the entire C++ standard library, not just the containers and algorithms parts based on Mr. STL's pre-standardization library
I wonder how that usage got started; it's not like everything in the stdlib has templates in it

Dunno, but that's been common for over a decade at least.

I guess that finally gives me a legitimate reason to not use the term "STL" anymore, which is annoying; I always assumed that argument was total pedantry

Whatever. Terms are used for communication. If people understand STL to be the c++ standard library so much the better.

Nope, programmers.se is about "conceptual questions about software development"; SO is about actual programming. Here there's no programming involved, instead you are trying to make tools used in the Linux world (GRUB & co.) work to create a disk that boots correctly a Linux live CD; surely there's better expertise about this matter on unix.se. — Matteo Italia 9 secs ago

Solutions to the question may be too broad which might lead to discussion from users and this site is not a discussion forum.. You better might have luck in other stackexchange site like programmers. In order to be more specific post your code so other might help on your code.. else try another site. — TFrost 32 secs ago

@TFrost Programmers.SE is not a discussion forum either; over there it'd be off-topic as well as too broad. — Ixrec 53 secs ago

@MichaelT are you referring to the fact that both links are pointing to the main site rather than meta?

^^^ a week ago I couldn't even imagine writing this (not that I complain - I like learning new things)

and now I feel like an idiot for not attempting to doing anything to any of those questions myself

@Ixrec I think you should actually feel okay, because it seems normal, and that's the way I feel myself. "If many users are like me, it should indeed be that high score posts rarely get negative feedback, no matter how bad these are. People simply build an opposite habit by reading on-topic, good quality questions, where high score means that post deserves upvotes"

for me it's probably a combination of 1) too many priorities competing with SE for me to do any serious cleanup attempts 2) not knowing of any useful edits to make to such content when I do see it 3) the lack of 10k/20k/mod powers that would enable me to actually make a dent in the stuff that does need straight-up removal

@Duga I can't work out how to explain it in a comment, but I feel like she's misrepresenting us again; that question seems too broad (and maybe opinion-based even with the stdlib restriction)

@LightnessRacesinOrbit Nope, Programmers is about software development concepts (see their [help center](programmers.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic) for details). Rather than about software design, this question seems to be about binary portability on Linux, which would be fine here, or possibly on Unix & Linux (though I'm not a regular on that site). Stack Overflow does not require that every question have code. — amon 12 secs ago

@gnat several of them only need one or two more delete votes to go pink'ed. It is very hard to try to fix the questions as they get upvotes and popular answers keep rolling in.

8:57 PM
that last question we got looks like a potentially good one (albeit maybe a good SO question) if someone familiar with C# could edit it to focus on the real question about that particular security feature so it doesn't look like he's simply asking "How do I port"

9:12 PM
@MichaelT I just re-checked: 5, 2, 6, 7, 1, 2 more delete votes to go (in the order they're listed). And it's definitely the case that piled on and voted up answers make it almost impossible to edit. Except for maybe that question of indentation width where all the answers seem to roll the same 3 or 4 simple recipes over and over again - but there, I'd say all answers except for top one could be deleted and readers wouldn't notice

While your answer might not contain anything inherently wrong, as you noticed, it was downvoted and will be removed soon. In fact, Programmers.SE welcomes detailed, in-depth answers. One-liners are (mostly) always too superficial to make good answers here, so please avoid them. — MainMa 1 min ago
