In connection in recent suspension I was wondering whether a user can change the parent user of the chat account to a site where they are not suspended and thus be allowed to still talk in chat.
So changing parent sites from a site you're suspended on to one where you're not doesn't lift the suspension but changing from one where you're not suspended to one where you are imposes it? — terdon Dec 13 '15 at 14:22
@terdon Yep, exactly. (It's perhaps worth noting to future readers that moderators do have the ability to change a user's parent site.) — Doorknob Dec 13 '15 at 14:23

@DanielFischer Recently it was announced that character limit for length of tag name was increased from 25 to 35. This means that some tags which were shortened can now be renamed.
Unless I made a mistake, there are 28 tags with name of length 25, see this SEDE query.
Should we start on meta a post where new names for shortened tags should be suggested?
Or will simply moderators go through that list and make changes where appropriate?

@MartinSleziak Most of those seem to have proper names. Those with shortened names have a clear expansion (as far as I see). Joonas will be sad to lose , but I don't think that's reason enough to keep the shortened form. Unless you see a tag where it's not just a clear expansion of an abbreviated word, no meta post necessary.

Thanks for the response!
As you can see both on meta and in the tagging chat room, this was already brought up by some users.
@DanielFischer However, there are also shortened tags which do not use all 25 chars, such as .
It's hard to guess whether there are many such tags.
would be another example.

@MartinSleziak Then we should probably have a post on meta where we collect the abbreviated tags that should be expanded (not things like of course). An answer in the Tag management thread, or a new question?

I am not sure.
Maybe we could start with an answer and if we see that more extensive discussion is needed, then a separate question can be created?
Will you create the post on meta?
Still, I would assume that most of the shortened tags will have lengths close to 25, so SEDE can be useful to find some such tags. Tags with tagname of lenght at least returns 317 tags with length at least 20.
Sorry, I'll have to go afk for some time.

No problem. It's not urgent, we had the 25 character limit for years, a few more hours won't bring the site down.

@DanielFischer I see that you have created a few tag-synonyms: math.stackexchange.com/tags/synonyms (And I see that the tag-info is copied there too.)

That comes for free with merging tags :D

The only unclear thing from what we discussed above is whether you are going to create post on meta or I should do that. (I would prefer your post, since you know better what mods expect from regular users.)
And also whether it should be separate question or an answer in tag management thread. (I think answer is ok, but I do not have any strong feelings about this.)

Still thinking about whether an answer in the tag management thread would have high enough visibility.

Well, then perhaps a new question?
I think that in the list of tags with 25 chars it is relatively easy to notice which of them are shortenings.
I do not expect too many shorter tags which need "Verlaengerung". (How is it called in English?)

I'm now going through the list with at least 20 characters. Prolongation, I think. Though that's primarily about time, prolongation of deadlines etc.

6:18 PM
Other than already mentioned and I do not see something you haven't already dealt with. (The latter is not in the list, it has 19 characters.)
However, it is quite a long list, it is easy to miss something.

@MartinSleziak , but I think that tag should be removed rather than renamed. Or do you think could be a useful tag?

I do not have strong feelings either way. (We have many questions about uniform/pointwise convergence, but IIRC at least uniform convergence has separate tag, not sure about pointwise.)
However, this is a separate question from character limit.
As you probably noticed, I am rather conservative when removing tags - I seldom do this without asking on meta first. (Perhaps it is not an ideal strategy.)
Ok, so I checked - we have tags for both and . (Perhaps these are not the only topics related to sequences of functions, although they are rather prominent.)

@MartinSleziak Yes. I wasn't intending to remove it immediately, I was only asking because if you said you find it useful, I'd consider that a reason to rename rather than posting in the tag thread.

I have mentioned the new combi*-tags here on meta: math.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/25475/… (The question Excessively long tags is not explicitly about these tags - it is about long tag names in general - but these two tags were mentioned in comments.)
