@Barns There are common idioms that all developers know and come to rely on. Those patterns make it easier for programmers to write and read code. When you deviate from those patterns by doing something "clever", as you do when you modify the loop control variable inside the loop, you increase the cognitive load, making the person reading or writing the code work harder to understand what it's doing. Adding another variable makes it clear that this isn't your standard for statement. As a follow up, What's so wrong with extract: it can put unsanitized, unknown variables in the global (or local function) namespace, or overwrite your own variables. It can also lead other programmers to wonder where a variable introduced this way came into play. But isn't we doing this as a programmers all the time - just - via compiling? We have grammar for specifying functions and Boolean expressions (FOL formulas) and then we compile that it the instruction set. Maybe we have to have language for writing FOL grammar (define functions, relations, variables) and then let it be compiled into FOL theory in FOL language and then some deduction engine can execute it.
