self is used as a placeholder basically. It isn't required that you use self, you could use "eeee" or "foo" or something else, it's just recommended for other programmers while reading your code — David White 56 secs ago

Your question is backwards. You should be asking: “Is there any reason to make methods static?” The presence of a lot of static methods is an antipattern typical of programmers accustomed to older languages. Think of the entire collection of functionality (all the methods) as a machine. For C programmers, hiding a pointer behind a typedef is widely considered bad style. In this special case, it might be justified because the pointer points to something unknown in C, so you could argue to provide just an "opaque handle". Still, strictly speaking, a "C++ struct" is different from a struct in C (think e.g. vtables), so I'd always pick the second option. — Felix Palmen just now
