" In other words, the algorithmic component. " If you do not want comments about your programming then you probably shouldn't post questions on a "question-and-answer website for computer programmers" — ravenspoint 7 secs ago

Welcome to SO. I have updated your question's tags, formatting, and terminology to better express what you have hopefully meant. Do observe that R and RStudio are two separate things. This question may be more on topic on another Stack Exchange site, even though it is now I think an OK question, just not here. StackOverflow is for software engineering questions, not about how to use software in general. — Kuba hasn't forgotten Monica 52 secs ago

@miken32 Only poor programmers refuse to think about how computer science is part of their profession. You can recognize them when the code that they wrote failed to scale, and brought down production. I've had to fix a number of such bugs in my life. — btilly 12 secs ago

@btilly I'm not suggesting it's not an important thing for programmers to know about, it's just not not on-topic at this particular web site, IMO. — miken32 38 secs ago

As a Java coder I have never ever seen an example where Optional as a parameter type had any net advantages over allowing null. I read that an alternative to a nullable parameter is an overloaded version of the method that hasn‘t got the parameter at all. IMO it sometimes helps, sometimes not. I too have heard Scala programmers say that they use Option a lot more. I canbt tell whether there is a rationale for that. — Anonymous 51 secs ago
