Wanted to see if I could get my webcam working on ubuntu, to check the LED was coming on when plugged into the USB port - I put it to my ear and was dissapointed II didn't hear anything

loll
if it makes you feel better, I once waited for the computer to turn on, at least show the ubuntu logo or the unity desktop... waited and waited
meanwhile I had the power cord on my hand

I so doubt there's a driver that exists for this camera anyway... I'm pretty sure it's older than the sun

easy to verify
check that the webcam has "Made in Cosmos" on it

oh my! says china!

Q: Why is Ubuntu 12.10 freezing and windows becoming greyed out?

user130137I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since it was released last April. (I upgraded to 12.10 in October.) Suddenly it began running very very poorly, acting as if I was using too much RAM or saturating my CPU. The system monitor and top did not seem to confirm this; I was only using about 30% of my RAM a...

> "White box pc"
Lol.

7:08 PM
@Myranda well there you have it. We now have conclusive evidence that the Chinese were here first than the sun, in fact, most likely constructed the sun.

cheap labour I guess
Turns out there's a linuxforums.org post about the exact model of ms webcam... so two people bought them!

@Aditya Only users that come in chat at least once every three days get pings.

@Seth Ok.. I didn't know that

@Myranda what is the models name?

@Aditya No problem :)

7:12 PM
vx 1000 I think they're up to the vx 6000 now

A: Ubuntu says 13.04 but lsb_release says 12.10

pablommelsb_release gets its information from /etc/lsb-release, provided by package base-files, while gnome-control-center simply displays the PNG file at /usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/UbuntuLogo.png, which is distributed in package gnome-control-center-data. Check which gnome-control-center-data ...

I was once trying to get a modem working for a dial up using friend

and saw the my "HP" branded mouse

7:21 PM
@Myranda also here: pchelpforum.com/xf/threads/…

appeared as "Logitech Pointing Device"

So HP is using Logitech

They use Canon for printers too.

O.o did not know that

I don't get...
where did all these people learn to use 'u' for 'you'?

@Seth you have to see the spanish language

@LuisAlvarado See what part?

7:31 PM
The new "damaged" generation has changed so many words to some horrible shorter versions that when talking to some of those younger aliens, I don't even know what the hell they are saying

I believe you.

am guessing in english, the less people are concerned towards correct spelling, the more weird stuff (And even generally approved words) will appear

Yeah, that's true.

Q: Badge cheating?

EnigmaI came across a user with low rep but a gold famous question badge and was curious. It seems his question (the only one he has) was marked as a duplicate of the actual famous question. This seems to be some kind of loophole. Steps (this is by no means an encouragement to do the same): find a ...

I made it into the newsletter again! \o/

7:37 PM
@Seth Congrats!!!!!!

Thanks :)

BTW, I don't receive any newsletter from AU

BTW, do you know anything about xmodmap or xkb?
@Aditya You need to sign up. Want a link?

@Seth No
@Seth sure

All the newsletters are in that link

7:39 PM
Thanks

np :)
@LuisAlvarado Do you know anything about remapping keys with xmodmap or xkb?

A little bit, what you need

Q: Should we (do we?) have a canonical question for remapping key bindings?

SethI've seen (and answered) quite a few questions on changing key 'A' to do key 'B' or make key 'A' do 'So and so' etc. I was thinking it might be a good idea to have a general canonical question for remapping key bindings. If it's a good idea, we should get someone to ask the question. Some pr...

I'm going to let that go live later today.
I'll handle an answer for xbindkeys
but we need one for xmodmap and xkb and any other way you can think of.

It would be good, I all with any questions that try to simplify and centralize others that are very similar. Like the broadcom one I did, minecraft or nvidia,compiz ones.
The more the better, because users can find the answer quickly instead of reading 100 similar questions and testing each one

yeah and we don't get 20 questions that can be answered by one.

7:43 PM
I don't understand why people never link to the questions they're asking questions about on meta.
5
OMG I FOUND A PROBLEM, I WONT TELL YOU WHERE THOUGH.
6

lol

@Seth Post your question... I would do the research and if it looks like I can post a decent answer, I would give it a shot.... Anyways, someone else would pitch in and provide the alternative answers...

@JorgeCastro Just because they want to read such messages like yours. heh :D

@Aditya I will ping you when it is done :)

7:54 PM
@Seth I would look at it :)

Fairly easy question

Q: Why does Unity depend on Gnome

Luis AlvaradoIn the light of some similar questions I have received, I took the liberty of creating a simple question that addresses this which are: Why does Unity depend on Gnome and to what point is the dependency required? Why is a specific version of Gnome used for a specific Version of Ubuntu (Let's sa...

@jrg once Firefox rendered everything on AU in italics for me. Had to change the character encoding

Q: How to thoroughly remove KDE settings?

DoDoGoSo I installed KDE to give it a nice go, and while I enjoyed it for those few days, many parts of it annoyed me, therefore I went back to Unity. I proceeded to remove KDE and all of its apps (at which I was successful) I failed at getting rid of its configs. Now my Firefox looks like it did under...

> "...many parts of it annoyed me, therefore I went back to Unity."
Facepalm.

lol
@GeorgeEdison Would you submit a userscript on stack apps?

A UserScript? You mean submit one on behalf of someone else?

Yeah, one for SE that is.

I could in theory but why?

No, my own.
What I'm trying to ask is, from what I'm getting from the FAQ, its only for applications that use the API
not user scripts that add functionality to the site.

9:09 PM
Ah, now I understand.
Quoting the FAQ:

sorry, guess I could have worded the first question better.

> "scripts or browser extensions that work with Stack Exchange sites"
I do have one recommendation though :)

Q: Stack Apps Listing Wizard - Making it easier to list your application right here on Stack Apps

George Edison Screenshot About Listing an application here on Stack Apps can be a lot of work. First you have to visit this question and copy the markdown. Some of those fields don't apply to UserScripts and some don't apply for commercial applications - those need to be removed. And then there is the t...

OK, so do I need to get an API key and blah blah blah just for a userscript?

It will help you list the UserScript on Stack Apps.
Disclaimer: I wrote it.

do I ask a question or Register an application?

9:13 PM
Ask a Question.
Registering an application is for getting an API key.

OK great.
Thanks :)

Q: Is there some congestion in the flag review queue?

guntbertI see 12 Flags "awaiting review", all 22 hours old. I am in no hurry - I am concerned by the possibility that something might be broken.

Hmm. Google indexes all the comments in AU chat. I didn't realize that. Thought it was only the Q&A.

@maggotbrain Generally speaking, if Google indexes any text on a page, it indexes all text on the page.

@EliahKagan Um. Right. ;-) I just was surprised to see my chat comments come up in search. Some sites are a bit more granular in what they allow to index and chat(in all SE) generates a lot of noise. No big deal. Just an observation.

9:21 PM
yeah, really.

Though I also found a few sites lifting my AU answers wholesale.

SO is almost all I get from Google these days.

Which, when I find some time I will compile and match against what MSO already has been made aware of.
For example: top serach result for "Ubuntu maggotbrain" - zqna.net/list/Maggotbrain.html
^search do'h! Now that's going into google. ;-p

yeah, it happens.
We're just too awesome! So people copy us. Proof of our fame.

@Seth and my answers are just sooo awesome! amiright?

Oh. one more funny. from their TOS: "We do not allow any automated searching or spidering of Zqna product search results."

good grief.

OK. I'm done. crawls back in box

They themselves are breaking our TOS

;-)

9:35 PM
@Seth They're probably violating our copyrights. They're probably not breaking the SE TOS, since they are probably not a party to it, as they probably obtained the data from a data dump torrent. Of course, I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. Related.

Q: Report sites that use SE content without following attribution rules here

Popular DemandThere are a number of license-violating clones of Stack Exchange sites popping up that use SE's cc-wiki data without following our Creative Commons attribution terms. license == TOS right?

@Seth No.

OK then.

License, ToS. (See links at the bottom of a page, for more information.)

ah yeah.
TOS == Terms of Service
little different I guess.

10:11 PM

10:39 PM

That's all defaults.

jrg
that's firefox, chrome hasn't changed.

that looks normal.
You haven't been playing with style sheets have you?

jrg
no, been playing with fedora. it was working fine until a minute ago, i'll ask on U&L shortly

OK.

jrg
fonts still go in ~/.fonts, right?

10:43 PM
ergh, idk.
I don't have any thing fonts in my home.

jrg

jrg

11:14 PM
@FEichinger Well, the stuff made it to the blog! \o/

jrg
@Seth yay! libreoffice!

11:39 PM
@Aditya @LuisAlvarado and anyone else interested: I have started a canonical question on changing keyboard bindings, please contribute if you can :)
@jrg Funny thing is, I really don't use it that much.

jrg
@Seth neither do i.
ok, rebooting, and maybe fonts will be fixed. fingers crossed.

good luck :)

jrg
well, there was a chrome update
i'm going to blame chrome stable then

jrg

@Seth correct

@jrg yeah I'm on 24

jrg
yup, blaming chrome on this one, just did the same thing here.

well file a bug report maybe

jrg
i'll try beta and then unstable first, just to figure out how localized it is
