I have actually tried running a live version of Ubuntu from a USB drive, and while it was helpful to get a feel for the distro on my hardware, I would still like to proceed with installing a lightweight variant to optimize the performance of my old laptop. I am aware of Ubuntu Mate, but would you recommend any other lightweight variants based on your own experience?

While it's certainly possible to run a full version of Ubuntu with 4 GB RAM, I would still prefer a lightweight variant to optimize the performance of my old laptop. From my own experience, I have found that a lighter variant can make a significant difference in terms of speed and responsiveness. Additionally, a lightweight variant can also help to conserve battery life, which is important for me.

@AlwaysAvailable Ah, I preferred the LXDE varient - though I'm running the mainline ubuntu at the moment cause my remote desktop of choice on linux (nomachine) won't run well on anything else
XFCE/Xubuntu is pretty good too

I actually tried LXDE in the past, but I didn't really like the look and feel of it.
Personally, I've had a good experience with XFCE in the past. It's lightweight and customizable, which is perfect for my needs. I'm planning to install it through Arch Linux or maybe download Xubuntu

@ArturMeinild just in case... currently I tested my own custom WSL2 kernel. Is there anyone also successfully tinkered WSL2? If not then probably I'll make it public
@AlwaysAvailable is LXDE supported screen sharing with google meet now? I heard that GDM is the only supported DE
