@Seth I think it's a little up and down in here - guess sometimes there just isn't a lot to chat about. 😅

Hello! I'm wondering if Ubuntu on WSL still relevant here

8:10 AM
@AlwaysAvailable I've run full fat ubuntu on less
4GB is quite a bit

@andrew.46 Thank you for the suggestion! I have actually tried running a live version of Ubuntu from a USB drive, and while it was helpful to get a feel for the distro on my hardware, I would still like to proceed with installing a lightweight variant to optimize the performance of my old laptop. I am aware of Ubuntu Mate, but would you recommend any other lightweight variants based on your own experience?
@JourneymanGeek Thank you for sharing your experience. While it's certainly possible to run a full version of Ubuntu with 4 GB RAM, I would still prefer a lightweight variant to optimize the performance of my old laptop. From my own experience, I have found that a lighter variant can make a significant difference in terms of speed and responsiveness. Additionally, a lightweight variant can also help to conserve battery life, which is important for me.

@AlwaysAvailable Ah, I preferred the LXDE varient - though I'm running the mainline ubuntu at the moment cause my remote desktop of choice on linux (nomachine) won't run well on anything else
XFCE/Xubuntu is pretty good too

I actually tried LXDE in the past, but I didn't really like the look and feel of it.
Personally, I've had a good experience with XFCE in the past. It's lightweight and customizable, which is perfect for my needs. I'm planning to install it through Arch Linux or maybe download Xubuntu

up to you
LXDE is almost windows XPish which worked for me :D

2:18 PM
Ha, I can see why that would work for you! (Just kidding) Personally, I prefer desktop environments that are a bit more customizable. Thanks for help!

@ArturMeinild just in case... currently I tested my own custom WSL2 kernel. Is there anyone also successfully tinkered WSL2? If not then probably I'll make it public
@AlwaysAvailable is LXDE supported screen sharing with google meet now? I heard that GDM is the only supported DE

@Thor-x86_128 You need to ask @NotTheDr01ds - he's the resident WSL guy. 😁
