@cocomac I actually flagged the older ones before mentioning it here. Just explaining here for @Zanna to see :-).

@NotTheDr01ds "the latest guidance" is a strong interpretation
I am quite surprised by the willingness to take terdon's recently expressed, so far popular opinion to be so definitive
even if I agree with that post, I don't feel good about steamrollering the entirety of previous discussion on the topic with it
it's a two-day old post
it's probably been viewed by less than 80 people
check out, for example, the votes over time on this answer

@Zanna That's completely fair -- I've deleted my comment on the older post that linked to the newer one as "the latest guidance". But regardless of the views of the answers pro or against, should there really be (at least) four variations on the question "What to do with non-English posts"/"Is xyz acceptable for non-English posts" on Meta? Shouldn't three of them be closed so that we can consolidate answers in one place?

@NotTheDr01ds maybe closing is a good idea - hope it will be interpreted as a "post your answer here" and not a "this here is the answer" :)

terdon can always "move" (delete/recreate) that answer onto the older one.
Correct me if I'm misinterpreting, but the comments on What to do with non-English questions or answers? seem to indicate to me that at least two AU mods were, at least, okay with translation?

idk, closing against the new one is okay with me
@NotTheDr01ds yup
one could argue that if the question content is good, we can translate it and keep it and who cares whether the OP can actually read the answers, which might help lots of other people? I'd expect terdon to agree with that argument myself shrug

@Zanna Cool - I have no strong opinion either way. Honestly, I was just looking for site guidance before I posted my comment on Проблем с принтера ми Xerox Phaser 3020.

@Zanna but the new one seems to be specifically about Google Translate (though the answer reaches a bit broader)
idk if it's just me, but I find posts on AU in other languages way easier to understand and translate than other text types, cause they are about familiar stuff, they use a lot of English anyway etc

@Zanna Also true. The general-purpose one is definitely the "What to do with ...".
Sure - In the case of this particular question, I do think it's completely fair that it was closed for lack of clarity. Even translated, it didn't quite "make sense", and I'm usually pretty good about being able to parse that into something sensical. It's still entirely possible to me that this was a question even though it wasn't mentioned. That could be what was meant by "Otherwise my printer prints his data." (perhaps under Windows?)
Anyway, back to sleep for me (eventually, hopefully). Dog woke me up in the middle of the night to go out, and I popped in here while I was up :P

oh, have a good sleep!
I should be doing something else... hmm... where did the morning go?

@Zanna yes, thanks for saying that. My answer is just my own, personal opinion which has so far received a measly 7 votes from the community. That isn't enough to make it guidance, I think.

:) I also think it's important the question is a bit narrower than the older discussions... If people really want to translate a good post when they know the language then that's cool with me... This new question I think asks whether we should routinely machine-translate every non-English post, which seems only likely to produce bad posts that don't help anyone.

@Zanna This. Using Google Translate and someone manually translating a post because they know the language is very different in my opinion. Just like terdon's reply to my comment regarding manually translating a worthwhile answer.
If that question was about translating a post in general like the older posts, it would have downvoted an answer saying a definitive no.
But me translating a language I can't understand using Google Translate, well, I'm fine with whatever the community decides. And I agree with terdon answer and I gave it an upvote.

:)
