If, like me, you find the Ubuntu mono font uncomfortable for code on the site, you might prefer Cascadia which is a free as in freedom font (recently developed by Microsoft for Windows Terminal). Cascadia is what you probably get for code formatted text if you access the site from Windows. It's higher in the stack than Ubuntu mono, so if you install Cascadia it should appear, no need to override the style sheet
Personally I really like it

@Zanna Minor point of frustration. - SE uses the source family of fonts for all the marketing stuff
Its brilliant

on 20.04 and presumably higher, one can install the fonts-cascadia-code package
@JourneymanGeek marketing stuff?
source family?

older versions don't have that package but you can install it from github.com/microsoft/cascadia-code/releases

I'm unhappy with the 'regular' font on windows - too ._.

7:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Segoe UI?

@JourneymanGeek I like the extra light one

Arial is 'easier' for me

@JourneymanGeek yeah the code one is nice

They're both the 'nicest' non obvious dyslexic friendly options

7:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek that's surprising... I thought Arial was a not-very-accessible font

@Zanna bdadyslexia.org.uk/advice/employers/… BDA's recommended it for years

Personally I think Segoe UI looks really good on the site, although it's not as big an improvement as Cascadia is for code
@JourneymanGeek that seems less of a specific recommendation to use Arial than a recommendation to use any available sans serif font

@Zanna and well - Segoe's more 'crowded' than Arial was
(This is an "optimised" reading environment for me - high contrast, big, well spaced out fonts)

@Zanna In my opinion Ubuntu Mono isn't bad. It's just a bit smaller than the serif font used in the rest of the page.

10:20 AM
For clarification:

10:51 AM
@BeastOfCaerbannog serif font? where?
to me Ubuntu mono looks super narrow

@Zanna Oh. I meant the sans serif (Ubuntu). I don't know why I wrote "serif". :/
@Levente Thanks! I know the difference. I must have been distracted when I wrote the message.

11:17 AM
@BeastOfCaerbannog oh :) yes it is a bit smaller, which is also not good, but my problem is that it looks squashed up
characters like / don't look good at all

Hmmm. I'm not sure I can see what's wrong. This is what I see:
Do we see the same? Apart from the smaller size, it doesn't seem squashed to me.

shrug maybe it's just me

@BeastOfCaerbannog what OS are you using?

@jokerdino Ubuntu 20.04

makes sense

11:31 AM
@Zanna Could it be a screen resolution problem? I'm using a 1920x1080 screen. Maybe the font does indeed look more squashed in lower resolutions.

hmm well yeah my screen is pretty small

@Zanna Does it look more round to you now?

that looks worse than what you posted before
@BeastOfCaerbannog looks ok
@BeastOfCaerbannog looks bad

Hmmm. So it probably is a screen resolution issue. I just increased the font size. To me both screenshots look OK.
@Zanna If you feel like it, go to a post with code, press Ctrl+Shift+C to open the inspector, select a code block and change its font size to see if it gets better. See the folowing screenshot for example.

At this point I would like to point out that it may be tempting to update the AskUbuntu theme stylesheet with whatever corrections we may come to an agreement about in here.
--> But I would like to remind that that would leave all Ubuntu users un-helped on other stacks that also often use codeblocks, but haven't applied corrections themselves.
--> So it really would be beneficial to communicate our issues back to the SE design dept., and ask them to update their global stylesheet (from which all sites inherit everything that they do not override in site-specific themes).

@Levente I agree. But first we must identify the issues.

@BeastOfCaerbannog hmm it doesn't look good to me whatever size it is

All the Engineering companies I have worked for use RomanS. It is the lettering style draftsmen learned back in the days of manual drafting and also the style of hand lettering used in most classic comics. The reason it is used in engineering, is that it is hard to mistake one letter from another, (except perhaps 1, l and I). It is sans serif.
You can select RomanS from most font tables.

Does anyone know how to send a message to a moderator?

@nan you can use a custom flag
like, if your message is not about a particular post or comment, you can flag one of your own posts
anyway, can I help you with anything?

nan
My post was deleted and I would like to know wy.
I think the answer was relevant and a good and complete answer...
Well it's my opinion...

yeah I don't know why your answer was deleted
someone flagged your post in a way that was... strange
Personally I'd change a lot of the formatting in that post

nan
3:39 PM
Ok, I'm ready a willing to receive you opinion if you don't mind...

but that's not a reason to delete it :)
@nan oh, will I'd try to use list formatting for lists
also, code formatting should only be used for code or codelike text, not GUI menu options
shall I edit the post to demonstrate?
(edits can always be rolled back)

nan
Yes, please. I am used to elaborating written procedures... and this is note the same...

4:10 PM
what sort of a game is it? @nan

nan
World of Tanks!
And you can run it from an external disk drive withou «defile» your main ubuntu installation.

4:31 PM
done. Also undeleted the post
