Things are not looking too good in Sri Lanka. A case was reported on the outskirts of our village. All vaccines are going to the hardest hit areas, (Colombo), and to the politicians and their friends. Everybody wears a mask but these often do not cover their noses. Many Indians have been caught trying to sneak in by boat.

6:00 AM
@RandomPerson I did the AstraZeneca one. I didn't get to choose it, but it wouldn't matter for me anyway. Did you get vaccinated? The situation in India is shocking. I really hope things get better for the people.
@Zanna I'm perfectly fine now, thanks! The side-effects only lasted (fever, headache, joint and muscle pain) for about 36 hours, with the use of paracetamol and ibuprofen, but it was a bit rough. I read that the second dose of AstraZeneca will have much milder symptoms, if at all. I hope you'll manage to get vaccinated soon!
@Zanna This is one of the most stupid measures against covid. We had that too for about a month or so, with super markets closing at 18:00 instead of 21:00. It only made things worse. The government never openly admitted that it was wrong and that it is one of the reasons of the recent increase of covid infections in Greece, but its abolition without thoughts of bringing it back, only shows that it was wrong.

6:41 AM
@Zanna Yeah.. It make no sense..
@Zanna hmm.
One annoying thing IMO is people telling us to maintain physical distance in the airport but once you're in the aircraft let's forget about the concept of physical distancing.
@Zanna yeah..
Rather than trying to impose restrictions on timings of retail stores, the government must promote delivery services such that people can stay home for the most part...
@C.S.Cameron I hope you're fine. Indians? You mean Indians who live in Sri Lanka are trying to go to India by boat?
@BeastOfCaerbannog I'm not yet vaccinated as the govt. hasn't authorised the use of COVID-19 vaccine in people of my age.
@Zanna The Central govt. made everyone above the age of 18 eligible to get vaccinated but the govt. didn't care about the stock of vaccines. In my state, only people above 45 years can get vaccinated as there is a shortage.
@BeastOfCaerbannog Do you live in Greece?

7:14 AM
@RandomPerson Yeah.
@RandomPerson The situation is similar in many countries, mine included.

@BeastOfCaerbannog :(

7:39 AM
@RandomPerson Things are getting worse in Sri Lanka, but not near as bad as in India, The US or in my home country Canada. Sri Lanka has 31 deaths per million, India has 165 deaths per million and the US has 1783 deaths per million last count.
India should be sending aid to the US :(

@C.S.Cameron heh, the US is in a better situation to sort it out - all it needs is will

@C.S.Cameron India doesn't have enough medical resources for its own citizens now :(
@JourneymanGeek yeah..

8:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek People in the US are still refusing to wear masks or get shots, how will they sort things out that way?

@C.S.Cameron how will the indians help with that?

If the indians sort out their issues, they can basically massively ramp up production - but a lot of the materials needed for production come from the US

@RandomPerson When the President says stuff like this, some people might get misguided and think his advice is equivalent to scientific advice.

@C.S.Cameron so... what kinda aid?

8:17 AM
@RandomPerson Things became worse when mandatory mask wearing became political in USA..

2 hours later…
10:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek I am an old geezer and take lots of Meds. I buy my Indian made meds in Sri Lanka for a fraction of the Canadian price. My puffer is $180/2 months in Canada, US price is $500/2 months and I pay $8/2 months in Sri Lanka. India has lots of talent when it comes to making reasonably priced vaccines and meds.

@C.S.Cameron and what's to stop those medicines from being 10x the price in canada?

11:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek Good question. Canadian businessmen and politicians have always seemed just as greedy as American ones to me. I think it must have something to do with socialized medicine in Canada. Medicine costs per year have a limit, over which the government takes over payment.
Pharma Bro, Martin Shkreli, would not have gotten so far in Canada.
With internet you can now buy Indian meds in Canada, at Indian prices. Big pharma puts a lot of effort into creating FUD about Indian sourced drugs, big money is involved.
?? My puffer is 20 times the cost in Canada as in India or Sri Lanka.

1 hour later…
12:09 PM
@BeastOfCaerbannog I was not able to get vaccinated due to ongoing lack of supply. We are calling the local hospitals which offer vaccination almost daily but they have no vaccine and no updates
@BeastOfCaerbannog I'm glad to hear you have recovered! The side effects sound pretty bad
@BeastOfCaerbannog at one point last year, the state government announced a 5 day total lockdown (all shops closed) with less than a day's notice. Obviously there was a run on every shop (but I only found out after almost everything was gone). Two weeks later there was a huge surge in cases, as I predicted
I'm glad the Greek government thought better of this idiocy
I heard in Karnataka shops were only opening from 6am to 10am
who is coming up with these ideas
@RandomPerson why are flights even operating? :(
@RandomPerson yeah they are allowing people aged 18-45 to get vaccinated here but it doesn't matter whether it's allowed or not because no vaccine is available

@Zanna #politicians
@Zanna :(
@Zanna hmmm..
You tried in the COWIN portal?

12:24 PM
@Zanna hmm?

6 hours ago, by BeastOfCaerbannog
@Zanna This is one of the most stupid measures against covid. We had that too for about a month or so, with super markets closing at 18:00 instead of 21:00. It only made things worse. @RandomPerson same vaccination centres listed there

I am going through COWIN (Chennai) for details and looks like not even one government vaccination centre exists in Chennai for 18-45 year old vaccination :(
On 28th April the facility of registration for vaccination for 18-45 year old started I guess. Was it possible to book the appointment that day?

no
appointment booking only from May 1st
then, no appointments

hmm..

I went to the local hospital on 28th and they said come on Saturday
I came and they said call on Monday
I called on Monday and they said call Wednesday
I called on Wednesday and they said call Monday

12:32 PM
I don't think walk-in is practical because of shortage. The only choice is to book appointment..
@Zanna :(

I don't think I can use COWIN because I'm not a citizen
these are private hospitals and you have to pay for vaccination there
but no supply
anyway, in good news, I read that the US government has decided to back the TRIPS waiver for covid vaccines proposed by India, South Africa and other countries, which was blocked by the UK, EU and USA at the World Trade Organisation previously
@RandomPerson whatever they tell me to do to get the vaccina, I'll do, but right now they just don't have any
I have high hopes for the TRIPS waiver
if it passes, millions of lives will very likely be saved
I'm not surprised that the US changed their position

@Zanna Oh, thanks. I had no idea that @BeastOfCaerbannog was in Greece (is Greek?). But yeah, the Greek government is not very good at admitting mistakes.

@Zanna It's quite unfortunate that they are not allowing non-citizens to register through COWIN. BTW, Anglo-Indians can get citizenship in India right?

@RandomPerson ?

It's regarding "Greece (is Greek?)"..

12:38 PM
I am well aware of the adjective, thanks :) I was making the distinction between someone living in the country of Greece and being from the country of Greece.

@terdon I am Greek and live in Greece. Are you Greek too?

So I wasn't sure if @BeastOfCaerbannog was Greek or if they just lived there.

@terdon ok.. my bad!

@BeastOfCaerbannog I don't live in Greece any more, but yes I'm Greek. Κοίτα να δεις!

@terdon seems they did not admit it, but at least they learned from it :)

12:39 PM
@terdon :D

@Zanna ok..

@BeastOfCaerbannog :) So you got the AZ vaccine? I thought they were mostly giving out Moderna these days.

@terdon I think that a while ago you had mentioned that you speak English natively and thought that you were from an English-speaking country.

@BeastOfCaerbannog My Dad's from the US, my mother's Greek. So I grew up speaking both languages natively, but I did grow up in Greece.
I left at 18, I've only lived in Greece as an adult for something like 2-3 years circa 2015-18.

12:47 PM
@RandomPerson yeah :(

@terdon I'm in the 30-39 age group. The AZ vaccines were initially meant for people of older age groups, but for some reason (bad reputation of the vaccine due to the media coverage of some rare blood clot cases) not many people of these groups were willing to do the AZ vaccine. So they gave the stocked vaccines to the 30-39 and 40-45 age groups. Vaccination with the Moderna vaccine started relatively recently, but for older groups until now.

Ah, OK. That explains why both my parents got Moderna.

@terdon Great!

yep :)
I wish I could get the Moderna one too here in the UK but I don't think I can. Not because I would have any problem with the AZ one, only because the second dose of the AZ will be later so if I get the first now, I will need the second in August and I hope to be in Greece then :/

@terdon Here the default for AZ is to get the second dose 2.5 months after the first one, but the application lets you choose if you want to do it a bit earlier, at about 2 months after the first.
Can't you select another date that better suits you?

12:53 PM
Yeah, I need to see if I can tweak the dates a bit. Or get the first shot in the UK and the second in Greece but that is bound to be complicated.
They only opened up for my age group (40-45) very recently, so I only took a quick look.
By the way, @BeastOfCaerbannog do you happen to be either a programmer or a sysadmin and, if so, are you looking for a job? We may have an opening (and if not, we will in the near future) if you're interested.

@terdon I think it's worth a try!

@Zanna Looks like the Indian government hasn't said anything about vaccinating non-citizens. Did you contact the UK Embassy regarding vaccination in India?

@terdon I am physicist and right now I'm trying to finish my PhD in medical physics. I don't consider myself a programmer, but I use quite a bit of Python for the analysis of the data for my thesis. I am really interested in doing a change in my career, and (try to) become a programmer, but that could only happen after December, which is when I get to defend my thesis. Thank you so much for this! Would you be interested for someone who uses Python for data analysis?

1:11 PM
@BeastOfCaerbannog We might, actually, yes. Although not right now. I work for a company that does biotech (bioinformatics) so some medical background would also be useful. That said, I don't think we'll have something on data analysis in the very near future, unfortunately.

@RandomPerson no but the private hospitals are willing to vaccinate me

Good luck on finishing the PhD! I know very well how stressful that is at the best of times, I can't imagine how hard it must be in the middle of a pandemic! Kouragio!

@Zanna Ok. I hope you get vaccinated soon.

thanks :) even if I can't, if everyone else does that will suffice hahaha

@terdon Don't worry! I need to get more experience as a programmer/data analyst first. Right now I can do some coding in Bash, quite a bit in Python, but, apart from seeing what others can do here or in other Stack Exchange sites, I don't even know how I compare to a real (one that has graduated from a CS school) programmer.

1:17 PM
@Zanna Welcome :)

@terdon Thank you very much! The pandemic has made things much harder, mainly psychologically, for me. Ελπίζω να την παλέψω!

1:30 PM
For what it's worth, I started working as a programmer after my post-doc and have never had any official "programming" training. So it is possible :)

@terdon Would it be possible to contact you, if you don't have a a problem, somehow out of AUGR?

1:49 PM
@BeastOfCaerbannog Can I use the email you have in your Unix & Linux profile?

Has anyone read "Inferno" by Dan Brown? If you want to become a conspiracy theorist about this plague, it is a good place to start.

@terdon Yes, of course!

done

2:21 PM
@C.S.Cameron Actually, the original Rainbow 6 novel....
Rainbow Six is a techno-thriller novel, written by Tom Clancy and released on August 3, 1998. It is the second book to primarily focus on John Clark, one of the recurring characters in the Ryanverse, after Without Remorse (1993). Rainbow Six also features his son-in-law Domingo "Ding" Chavez, and explores the adventures of a multinational counter-terrorism unit that they formed, codenamed as Rainbow. The title refers to Clark's title as commander of Rainbow. The book debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, and has since been adapted into a series of video games. == Plot... ==

People are reporting issues with DVD installation of Ubuntu 21.04. I came across askubuntu.com/q/1336515/124466 and askubuntu.com/q/1336277/124466
I realized that people have been talking about much more serious stuff here. :-)

@ArchismanPanigrahi General Discussion is srs bzns

2:37 PM
Did anyone manage to register themselves in the CoWin Android app? There is only login option but apparently no way to register. When I try to login using OTP, the SMS never comes to my phone.

@ArchismanPanigrahi what country its in might be useful
we all have our different systems after all

@ArchismanPanigrahi you need to register on the website and then book appointment in the app

@ArchismanPanigrahi we had the same problem
@jokerdino lol

@jokerdino Thanks
