Q: How to add second linux distro (xubuntu) to grub?

alphaharrisI installed Xubuntu on a pcie ssd to use side-by-side with Mint. But, I still want to use Mint on its current SATA ssd drive. Ideally, I'd like to make sure that the Xubuntu installation is bootable (I haven't been able to yet), and then have an entry for each in Grub. I have a boot-repair USB fo...

Q: How to protect my OS against any process consuming all resources?

thisismydesignI have a modern computer (7th gen i7, 16GB RAM, SDD) with up-to-date Ubuntu (18.04.2 LTS), yet I constantly run into the issue that certain processes completely freeze the computer. These are mostly related to I/O and CPU, but in principle, could be anything. Is there a generic way to defend aga...

dangerous spam, really need to be remove

@damadam dangerous?

@terdon really well hidden, probably not as dangerous as I think, sorry, I do some mistake today
and i can't edit the message :(

@damadam Actually, I don't even think it's spam. I opened the link (in a VM since you scared me! ;) ) and found this in the comments of that irrelevant article:
Looks like a very, very confused OP, not really spam. And not dangerous at all as far as I can tell.

I also thought it was spam, but you are right. I've retracted my spam flag and voted to close it as unclear.

wtf, the link seems like a spam, i use lynx to verify it (to try to block JS hidden script); i definitively see a spam

2:44 PM
@terdon Just out of curiosity, did you dismiss all spam flags as helpful or were they automatically dismissed as helpful after the edit?

I dismissed them as helpful manually. I am not actually sure that did what I wanted it to do. I wanted to mark the flags as helpful because I can understand why people would call that spam, but at the same time not apply the spam penalty to the OP who I think is just confused and not spamming.
So I closed the question, removed the link because why not, and dismissed the flags as helpful. That may or may not have done what I wanted it to do. We'll see...

@terdon just a question : where did you take this picture from? Is it from a previous deleted post?

yawns

@damadam No, it's from the link in the post here. If you open the link, then scroll down to the comments, you'll see that.

@damadam I am able to find that picture if I open the scary link in the Tor browser and scroll way, way down in the comments. (I used the Tor browser for that not to stay anonymous, but because its default security settings are quite good and it throws out accumulated state on exit.)

2:49 PM
@terdon You back to moderation?
Or just for urgent things?

terdon never left moderation
they're taking a break from regular day to day modding
but are available when needed
such as for pings done here, or in certain urgent cases :)

ahh okay, so i'm totally faulty, sorry to have scared you :/

@damadam No worries. Better safe than sorry!

i can't even removed my message ... argh !

@ThomasWard Oh yeah!!!

2:52 PM
@damadam If you mean your chat message, I don't think that's causing any harm. The context that immediately follows it clarifies for any future readers that it might not be accurate.

@Kulfy Neither. I am actually going to be stepping down. I've asked SE to remove my diamond, but they haven't done so yet. I'll be posting on meta at some point but the summary is: I don't feel like I can do this any more. I have too many diamonds (3) so I am putting down two and staying on only on U&L which was my first diamond.
I'll still be around, but I just don't feel up to moderating 3 sites in the current situation.

@terdon Bleh i'll need to ask for a mod election then for 2 more people.
@terdon sorry to see you leaving :/

OK am I dreaming or is this for real?

... i mean, unless we want to turn this into a bureaucratic dictatorship under my thumb... whistles nonchalantly

I guess Mitch and Oli lurks around oftenly.
So I think dictatorship isn't near

2:56 PM
@Kulfy Byte and fossy too!
@ThomasWard Dunno, maybe I'll come back at some point, but it's just become too draining.

@terdon Yeah the latter one closed a question today :D

And somehow I feel that being a multi-site mod sends a message of support for SE that I don't want to send. I now feel this is a morally bankrupt company, and I just don't want to be involved with them so much.
(Not because of the CoC changes or pronouns, by the way, but because they've refused to do anything to ameliorate the harm they caused by dealing with things publicly instead of privately).

> "As Destiny 2 is moving to steam, it would be a logical next step to support Steam Play / Proton Wine for running Destiny 2 on Linux." - Allow Linux users to play Destiny 2

Has there ever been a change.org petition that actually accomplished anything?

@terdon nope

3:06 PM
@ThomasWard That's too bad!
I really liked Destiny 2

@blade19899 even if i never played a Destiny game, I got a Windows dual-boot just for that (that helps a lot when you try some fangames)

@ThomasWard Actually, wikipedia lists a few that did seem to have an effect.
E.g.:
> On the morning of February 2, 2012, Stef Gray, a 23-year-old graduate in New York, held a news conference at the Washington offices of Sallie Mae where she presented the results of her Change.org, Sallie Mae, the "nation's largest private student-loan provider" petition, which had received about 77,000 signers. That afternoon the company changed its forbearance fee policy.[26]

@damadam I'm a Linux only user. No Windows. On my Work and personal laptop. So, I guess I'm not playing Destiny anymore.

@blade19899 I cry with you : youtube.com/watch?v=eJuvKn5j_kE
That seems utopic to be able to run each Windows software on Ubuntu, with current OS market place

3:24 PM
@blade19899 unless it's able to be used via Steam Play?
if possible that MAY give you the ability to run it :p
(also don't swear, even if you are blocking it out, as we ALL know what you mean)

@blade19899 Do not try to run DEstiny or DEstiny2 on linux or you risk your account getting a life long ban, Bungee is actively banning everything whats not running on windows, for them using linux is like youre using a cheatbot

@Kulfy any information on when this will become effective?

PRATAPToday morning when I logged in to Ask Ubuntu, all of a sudden my reputation points changed from ~7000 to ~7300 but there are no traces. How is this possible? A: All of a sudden reputation changed from ~7000 to ~7300. How is this possible?

Thomas WardGlobal Rep Adjustment. Read "We're rewarding the question askers" on the StackOverflow blog for details. They started implementation yesterday. (Upvotes on questions that were +5 are now +10 so you gain rep from this recalc) Mods have more details on this than end users do, though, so I'll in...

Evil powers can check that for you :D

@dessert You answered more questions as you asked i guess i did not recieve much either as I have not asked many questions :)

@Videonauth well I have ~100 upvotes on question, this should at least be noticeable, but there’s just nothing: stackexchange.com/users/7456917/dessert?tab=reputation

7:28 PM
:shrug:

@dessert It is to be noted that reputation was awarded retroactively, i.e. as if it was always 10

even in the rep chart?

Yeah
No sharp curve will be there
See your reputation on Jan 21, '18

7:49 PM
@Kulfy grrrrrrrrrrrr
@dessert already has. The rep was awarded to the day it was supposed to be awarded.

@Rinzwind except to me :(

so you might see some extra numbers for the 200 rep a day award

ok, whatever

@dessert how do you know? You got 114 upvotes from questions. Thats not a lot of rep ;)
so about 114*5 = 570 rep extra

I had expected a peak in the graph – I’m not used to data from the past being altered, this is wrong in so many ways oO

7:54 PM
well the whole idea is stupid :=)

it is indeed

fine if you start doing it from today omwards but retroactive is just wrong
well we got zero influence on it so ...

Has anyone else been experiencing issues with connecting to ppa.launchpad.net when running apt update?

11:16 PM
@Terrance works like a breeze here

Hmmmmm, it's been very flaky on two different home units, then when I tried at work I realized that I had no 3rd party PPAs setup. :(

I just did a complete apt update && apt dist-upgrade with a lot of ppa's enabled and it did not have one hitch

I've been trying different DNS servers, but still the same results. It was not working much through yesterday, but then last night it worked fine. But today, same results, not connecting and timing out.

but then im in europe

ppa.launchpad.net is in GB

11:18 PM
you could try a tracert

At least resolves to there.
I think I will try that.

i suggest this because it sounds maybe like a routing issue

That's what I am thinking as well.
Looks like it dies off at SOURCE-MANA.ear2.London1.Level3.net (212.113.8.154). Or at least that was the last place that responded.
Yep, I get nothing after that address.

Maybe they don't like us out here. :(

maybe the cleaning staff stumbled over some cables :D

LOL!
OK, good, it is not my side then. Something else is going on.

NOOOOOOOOO my game crashed -.-

Oh no!!!!

mental note do not tab out so often

Funny thing is, I can ping ppa.launchpad.net without any issues.

11:24 PM
well pings are not affected by routing

Good point!

Phew I'm a lucker, the game had autosaved just before the crash

Nice!

pure luck tho the autosave cycle is set on 45 minutes

Must have killed out right after the save! :)

11:38 PM
probably, some games in the past had that too

Could be. :)

beware of X4 Foundations, if you like those kind of games it has a total addictive tendency :D I've spend already nearly 500 hours on it
in about 1,5 months

I'm not really a gamer, but my sons are.

I like simulator type games like FSX or I am sure that the new Flight Sim 2020 will be my going broke type.

11:44 PM
Ah well Flight Sim lately is a big big money sink after they decided that you need to buy every plane on its own
and you cant play offline with all glory as you would need about 20 petabytes HDD space for all the data

Good point! FSX seems to be working fine for me still though

Yeah I never grown old tho :D Gamer at heart here for everything simulation or 4X games

Hmmm, the plot gets thicker about launchpad.net. Some of my 3rd party PPAs work fine that are hosted here.
ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu bionic' Works fine
But ppa.launchpad.net/polychromatic/stable/ubuntu bionic does not
