Q: Netgear Ethernet router not working on Ubuntu 18.04 system

ZakaliteI have an Ethernet router that is not working on Ubuntu 18.04. The Ethernet connection did not work on the installation media, so I figure it can’t be the Ubuntu installation. Different ports don’t work; I’ve done sudo ip link set enp4s0 down and up but it doesn’t work. Everything I do gives me n...

Q: Raise the Elephant not working with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS?

RicgalI recently upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS. This was not a fresh install, but rather an upgrade. My question regards a keystroke combination that I would use when the browser would freeze the desktop. To restart the computer I would Raise the Elephant, that is, holding alt> and ...

Q: Recreating a RAID4 / RAID0 array

AdamAt first, there was a RAID0 array, to which I've added a new disk by issuing mdadm --add but when I've done that, the drive started to fail because of the power issues and the array has not started since then. Just after mdadm started to do its thing to move RAID0 to RAID4 type array. I've t...

Are 773 down-votes in one day a record?

3:40 PM
make that 776 :=)
and counting probably

Well it was 772 down-votes before I made it 773 :P. What an incredibly long discussion, I'm still reading it.

I read it before when Monica got in trouble over it.
Only an american could make that up :P

why does any one body n-word person upvote that?

4:01 PM
In the light of these events I hereby declare I am to be referred to as “nobody”, for example “It’s nobody’s fault!” and “Nobody’s perfect.”
Luckily they don’t speak of personal pronouns, but pronouns in general and the seemingly undefined “gender pronouns”.

4:20 PM
@dessert There are two people here with nobody in their user ID. They might claim personal attack and get you banned :P

I wonder which one supersedes the other. ;)

I couldn't help it and posted an answer in that gender war to put my Ask Ubuntu experience in the thread: meta.stackexchange.com/a/335295/366359

+1

TY blush
Did you like the end sentence where I hope AU would become the gold standard of computing? :P
A corny joke for chemists!

I upvoted the 1st 5 answers too

Q: Can't use remote server because too many open files in system

Kunyu ShiI'm running some python programs in the background of the remote ubuntu machine. The program opens too many files that exceed the system limit. I want to ssh to the remote server now, but I can't because of: /bin/bash: Too many open files in system I tried ssh -t kshi@servername.ucsd.edu 'pkil...

I only upvoted about #10 from Gilles cause I liked his answer but more so probably because I admire his many Linux answers.

link to a? >:)
I already know his profile page :X

Linking his or her or it or they or them's page was for the sake of trolls in the room :P

his :=)

haha just kidding due to spirit of the thread. Besides I think 99% of the nerds are male anyway.

4:35 PM
we just call everyone askubunter :=D

I don't mean nerd in a derogatory manner. I count myself, yourself and everyone else in this chatroom in that category because we find computers interesting.

nerd is a compliment :=)

Does anyone know how to tell when Nautilus File Manager is open? It runs under Nautilus desktop which is always open and I can't find an easy way to distinguish them. Only a hard way which may not always be reliable: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/546241/…

4:43 PM
hmmm? ps -ef does not work?
rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$ ps -ef | grep nemo
rinzwind 1640 1230 0 okt10 ? 00:00:25 nemo-desktop
rinzwind 9941 9929 0 18:43 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nemo
rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$ ps -ef | grep nemo
rinzwind 1640 1230 0 okt10 ? 00:00:25 nemo-desktop
rinzwind 9956 1 25 18:43 ? 00:00:00 nemo
rinzwind 9972 9929 0 18:43 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nemo
rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$
that is with nemo NOT active and active
"nemo" is the process when nemo is open

although nemo captained the nautilus he is not she.
$ ps -ef | grep nautilus
rick 3036 32558 0 10:45 pts/2 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nautilus
rick 5613 27066 0 Oct10 pts/19 00:00:26 nautilus

I would have expected nautilus to behave the same :{
apparently it does not

If I kill nautilus all the desktop icons disappear along with the file manager.

ofcourse :=)
AND wow a question not answered on google yet O great q :=

This is one of the days I wish I knew a gnome software engineer

4:48 PM
you don't?

you do?
Well if you do kindly link the Nautilus problem to hm / her / them :)

nah there are no dutch developers for gnome :(

Too bad, we could use someone to put their finger in the dam of flooding bugs.

japan has a broken dam :=)

Sorry didn't know. The Netherlands are famous for broken dams and wooden shoes (helps them walk on water during floods?)

4:59 PM
dam broke today cuz of the thyphoon. death toll atm is 2 so not too bad :P
@WinEunuuchs2Unix we don't wear wooden shoes and never have. except for some farmers cuz that step in a lot of gunk. easier to clean.

@Rinzwind Ha I meant wooden shoes hundreds of years ago, not modern days :P

we never did
farmers did sometimes. and nowadays some do to attract tourists

Clog - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Clog
Clogs are a type of footwear made in part or completely from wood. Clogs are used worldwide ... the Netherlands, and dates from 1230 and 1280. These finds look very similar to the wooden shoes that are still worn in The Netherlands.

fake

OK I'll file that under Trump's "Fake News"

5:06 PM
and trust me I am dutch. I have in 50 years maybe seen 2 people wearing clogs

I understand. I'm sure there are some Americans that still think Canadians live in igloos

you can ask @fabby and Jacob when they are here too >:)

I'm sure @fabby is too busy trying to get WiFi in his new apartment to come here :P

he can have a look outside can't he?

Oops not "his new apartment" I mean "their new apartment", I didn't mean gender reassignment against unstated wishes

5:09 PM
oh wait

Oh I didn't realize Fabby was in the Netherlands. I thought he moved from Germany to England or something like that.

you know crocs. those are considered clomps too

crocks are made of rubber though...
I think it would be cool to live in the Netherlands for a couple of years. Germany too.

it is cold here indeed :=)

Check out the temperature in Edmonton and you won't be saying that :)

5:16 PM
time for me to go afk :) :) laterz

Q: Does archiving root directory archives additional mounted disk directories?

AmitI am trying to archive a bunch of systems using tar. In order to do so, I am planning to run tar on each of the devices listed in df command output (except tmpfs). Since the non-root devices are mounted inside root directory (like /opt or /data), I am unsure if running a tar command on the root ...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix My granny always wore wooden shoes when collecting eggs until she was about 80
My dad changed from wooden shoes to rubber shoes to work in the garden when I was 10.
(He never bought any but his dad insisted on buying them for him and his last pair broke when I was about that age.)

:P

cc @rinzwind

you should have lied and said you knew no-one :+

I've known >10, <20 people wearing wooden shoes.
@Rinzwind I never saw any where I lived... I only ever saw them in the rural area my granny lived in.
last time I saw someone wear any wooden shoes is nearly 40 years ago

like I said: some farmers and tourist areas D:
farmers nowadays wear rubber boots

8:37 PM
(I mean: proper wooden shoes that are unpainted...)
not some of these " traditional" ones:

Belgium != Netherlands :X

@Rinzwind Last week I had a Swiss colleague go: "Oh look! Look! Look! Stop the car!"
It was a windmill

they got those in Switserland too :P

@Rinzwind The metal ones: yes...
Apparently no wooden ones.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Tomorrow I'm going to see the landlady about the main router.
(She's back from holiday)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I heard about the mod being banned, so changed my profile description 2 days before that was posted.
So my post predates theirs, so trumps theirs...
(Also: give me your opinion) @WinEunuuchs2Unix
