Q: Does `fstrim` causes write to all free blocks every time?

OlegI have Ubuntu 18.04 server with 500G SSD disk which has LVM and dm-crypt on it. I recently noticed that the number of bytes written to disk (as reported by vmstat -d or iostat) is unrealistically high. After monitoring the system I/O I found that the giant spike in disk writes happens once a week...

Is this a new badge? I earned it as well today…
it is obviously, all 82 times this badge was awarded was 3 hours ago: askubuntu.com/help/badges/373?page=1
there’s also a golden version of it: askubuntu.com/help/badges/374/lifeboat

congratulations to @Fabby and @Zanna for earning that!

@dessert Holy crap! 2 more gold badges!

8:23 PM
two?

Apparently only one gold and 2 silver.
I misread...

which two silver?

2* Lifejacket, 1* Lifeboat.
I wonder why this one got a downvote though.

oh, ok :)

I remember this one though: the guy was being downvoted into oblivion until I answered.
Then most took away their downvote and atterwards upvoted.
This one got me the very first reversal badge on the site though.

@Fabby You got me beat I think my highest is 100, but I'm not sure: askubuntu.com/questions/832524/… I was just thinking if it should be closed though... talk about killing the goose that laid the golden egg!!!
actually it's a dupe I think of @ByteCommander's question: askubuntu.com/questions/811453/… but don't tell him because he's swinging that mod hammer around these days :P

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Holy shit! +1 Why would you delete such an excellent answer?

11:10 PM
@Fabby Good lord no I wouldn't delete it. I think the question should be closed because byte's question was a few months earlier.
I would loose future votes if the question was closed so I couldn't make myself click the close button :)

You wouldn't lose any future votes if you closed as a dupe...
a lot of people vote twice: once on the original and once on the dupe...

They tend to vote for accepted answer, and mine isn't that.

yawns

@Fabby Have you ever done rotating backups where 28 Dailies are recycled into 12 Weeklies, 18 Monthlies and 999 Yearly backups? It's making my head hurt! Plus I really don't think I need to keep backups for 999 years :(
The daily backup on Saturday December 31 would also be branded a Weekly, Monthly and a Yearly backup! Makes my head hurt.
When I'm finished though I'll have a monster post for your excellent "backup PC" Q&A
Which is already a monster in it's own right with 5 or 6 answers posted by yourself :P

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Erm, yes...
The correct way of doing it is:

11:24 PM
@Fabby let me guess back in the reel to reel tape backup days :P

Mo-Tu-We-Th-Fr-Su

You are missing Sa?

Su = weekly backup = full

You misunderstood, I'm not doing full system backups.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's run on Sa, but it' called Su so it can run for > 24h

11:25 PM
I have 656 daily backups in gmail.com and my 15 GB limit is at 97%

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You need a weekly full and then a differential from the full each day.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Ah!

I'm not doing differential backups
I backup everything important at 4 am

Urgh...

Sorry I mean cron backs it up to gmail.com

If you're going to ever do a restore, it's going to take ages!

11:26 PM
gmail limits messages to 20 MB, so mine don't take that long.

You're not backing up for the backup, but for the restore!
so your restore needs to be super-fast.

I'm backing up for the sake of backing up. I've never restored :P

Wrong! :P ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not a transactional database

I backup to my NAS.

11:27 PM
it's a collection of scripts i've written and configuration settings
But your NAS isn't off-site. gmail.com is offsite

But I do an incremental deduplicating backup once / week and a prune once/year.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I travel a lot.

I want to prune daily with cron and recycle dailies into Weeklies, Monthlies and Yearlies. Plus I have "Special" flag

so it is: I have one NAS at my dad, one NAS at home.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Nah...

I used to tell a client to take his zip drives home.

Mo-Tu-We-Th-Fr-Su
then you have:

11:29 PM
too late I already have 7 days a week on gmail.com

Su1, Su2, Su3, Su4,
Su4 = Monthly
12 monthlys

Saturday 4am is my weekly backup. Last day of month 4am is my monthly backup.

Month12 = Yearly.

I'm planning on 18 monthlies....

Then with just: Mo-Tu-We-Th-Fr-Su1, Su2, Su3, Month1-12 (=20 backups) you can restore whatever of the last year.

11:31 PM
^^^ perhaps that explains it better than my drinking beer convo

Yeah, with just 20+999 backups you can restore 999 years.
the further in the past, the coarser your backup gets.
OR
You do a differential backup weekly
and prune 1/year and store that.

For sake of argument I do a full backup every day. Then I want to recycle them into weeklies, monthlies and yearlies in the future.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix That's wrong.

nothing wrong with a full backup :)

You do weekly fulls and differentials for each day of the week and then recycle
OR
Use a differential Deduplicationg compressing backup (which is what I do)

So my full backup (including music, excluding videos) is 101GB on my local SSD
but it only takes 52 GB

11:37 PM
my backup is a tar converted to base64 for gmail rules. I don't have such a report but was thinking of writing something to give me directory listing of each daily .tar > base64

and my last differential only took 2.49 GB

I only backup words I've written, not pictures or songs or gifs. Important gifs are posted here in ask ubuntu.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix This problem has been solved before.
You're re-inventing the wheel, so that's why I'm telling you best practices.
So in a nutshell: 1/week: full (whatever your definition of "full" is)
1/day differential
re-use 4-weekly as monthly, re-use month12 as yealy, prune the rest.
Restore is:
Restore last full backup, restore lasst differential.
@YufenyuyVeyehDider Welcome!*
You're up late!
My apologies to you: You must think I'm a nut-job @YufenyuyVeyehDider
>:-) ;-)

Thanks, @Fabby.

I'm just trying to teach you some new tricks...
If you edit, ensure you're editing everything:
Spelling
Grammar
Readability!

11:42 PM
I'm open to learning @Fabby.

(which also involves converting picture links to pictures, moving paragraphs around, ....)
Look at the great questions and great answers here on the site and every time you press the [edit] button,
ensure you're editing the existing to become a great question / answer
That's it!
:-) :-) :-)
Stopping to bug you now...

Okay... I guess I have to work on my rushing habits.

:D I know, but I don't generally review the edit queue any more: Only every now and then when I cannot sleep

But when I do, I try to do a GREAT job!
:D ;-)
@YufenyuyVeyehDider So how many languages do you speak and which ones???

11:45 PM
Do you mean it's late where you are too?

@YufenyuyVeyehDider Currently in Germany: 1h later than you!!!

I can fluently speak "three" languages and partially speak one.

Which ones?

@Fabby Haha! I'm in Cameroon.

(I can get into trouble in 10 languages, but only ourt of trouble in 6)
@YufenyuyVeyehDider English, Français, Swahili and???

11:48 PM
@Fabby Hahaha.
not Swahili... Korean, and my dialect.

You don't have to answer... I'm just trying to figure out if we have a language in common to piss off @WinEunuuchs2Unix

@Fabby I've worked in MIS before so I know Grandfather-Father-Son backups and all that jazz. I was only sharing my headache with you of converting dailies into weeklies and monthlies. Plus there may not be a perfect match if machine was turned off for one day. Restoring isn't in the cards for me as a machine is only kept active for 2 years and clean installs are done on the new one with copy from old one. In the case of a fire though I would have to restore.

@YufenyuyVeyehDider Wow!

@Fabby I know lots of languages: bash, RPG, Mark IV, COBOL, BASIC, assembler, C

@Fabby Hahaha :) That's funny.

11:50 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix What's Mark IV?

Plus JCL, OS/400, batch files
Mark IV is kind of like RPG

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Know all those too and Pascal, JavaScript, Logo, ...
Anyway, so back to the backups:

Someone recommended Pascal to me and I thought about Turbo Pascal once. Others recommended Java and thought about it. But now I'm thinking of learning Python + SQL

@Fabby I'll also like to know what Mark IV is @WinEunuuchs2Unix.

I don't understand your backup question then... @WinEunuuchs2Unix
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I don't like positional languages like COBOL and Python.
>:-)

11:52 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Python is cool.
I code in Python too.

COBOL isn't positional, RPG is positional though.

So you'll have 365 daily backups, all of them incremental and you want to prune them???
You cannot do that!

@Fabby I have 656 full daily backups stored on gmail.com and I am running out of free space. So the heat is on.

But you cannot prune as they're all incremental AFAIU.
Not differential...

but I have full daily backups from two machines and three distro's so I have a multi-user setup in a way.
they are neither incremental nor differential, they are full backups

11:55 PM
The plot thickens... :D
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Aaaah!!!!!
656 full backups?

the plot thickens more because the name changes so "Alien Daily" and "Backup Daily Alien" have to be aliased together into the same set.

OMFG!!!!
You need to throw everything out and restart AFAI'm concerned.
Throw out "Alien Daily" and you're good too.
lots of space now!
Why keep all the old full backups?

I'm not throwing away 656 backups. I'm recycling them into weekly, monthly and yearly.

Are you ever going to restore any of them???

haha never

11:57 PM
OK, so Grandfather-father-son'em then...

this is an experiment

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Experiments go wrong, you throw out the results and you start over.

the same sh*t is stored in ask ubunu and github

Looks like you don't have th throw away the baby together with the bathwater though.
looks like you changed from: "Alien Daily" to "Backup Daily Alien" somewhere during the experiment.
so throw out all the oldest ones. (the bathwater) and keep the baby!
