Q: systemd service stop always fails

SiKingI am converting our service startup script from SysV to systemd. Our "service" is a java server running in Netty. To start the service, in the unit file I have something like: [Service] SyslogIdentifier=%N Type=simple ExecStart=/usr/bin/java -jar ....jar I don't think the exact command is re...

slow going... keep getting distracted, so xubuntu downloaded, do I use unetbootin to make the usb bootable drive?
it only lists up to 14.04 for xubuntu though
should I use Etcher?
Nevermind, unetbootin should really make it clearer that the top and bottom are mutually exclusive...

kernel panic on xubuntu startup...?

3:24 AM
Looks like I ordered the wrong model... :(

3:36 AM
wow, was actually able to get it to boot!
hmmm wifi isn't working...

4:02 AM
I checked the password twice...
3rd time's the charm, it seems to be working!
2 wifi indicators though...
Any other things I should check out before blowing away Windows?

@AaronHall :D :D :D
Good one! Thanks, I needed that! (Juggling cooking for a surprise birthday party together with trying to install a pHANA.)

@Fabby I kinda meant it, is unetbootin still the way to do it?

:49625292Oh, Erm, Just boot the 18.04 ISO from a thumb drive...
(after dd-ing it to said thumbdrive)

I thought a program like unetbootin was required...

@AaronHall unetbootin is a GUI, so you can still use that, but as you know what dd is and have a running Linux system already, why bother?

can you point to instructions? I did already use unetbootin, but I've got to tweak the boot in grub...

Q: How to create a bootable Ubuntu USB flash drive from terminal?

Avinash RajIs there any way to create a bootable Ubuntu USB flash drive from the terminal without using any third-party applications like YUMI, Unetbootin, Startup Disk Creator, etc. I tried to create a bootable Ubuntu flash drive with dd method, sudo umount /dev/sdb sudo dd if=/path/to/ubuntu.iso of=/de...

I've rarely used dd, and I don't really know what unetbootin does. If all it does is dd the iso onto the thumbdrive... and why haven't I seen that link before?

1:58 PM
@AaronHall Because (unlike me) you're human???
:D ;-)

@Fabby I only do this like once every few years. :)

@AaronHall Yeah, I hear you! I'm still on 16.04...
as I don't like upgrading every 2 years, I'll probably be moving to Manjaro (Arch, but easier) and KDE plasma...
I like complex things without having to build my own kernel from scratch...
(that's just too complex!)
:D ;-)

I really want to do LFS, but I never have the time.

Q: ssh asking for a password but not accepting it

mranonI'm trying to scp through a virtual machine but when the guest terminal asks for my host user password it simply does not accept my real user password. Is the machine asking for another entry? The user is not root and I know it's password in the host machine it looks like this: user@host's pas...

Q: How to send input to process' STDIN from terminal without sending EOF?

ShuzhengI'm studying computer science and doing CTF's and exploit exercises in my free time. I want to send input to a program's STDIN (i.e. the payload below) in a format-string exploit exercise, where the program is reading from fgets() twice. Now, if I pipe the payload (see below), then system("sh;#...

Anyone know if ubuntuplace.info is legit? Looks like askubuntu in french

@terdon @Seth @ThomasWard any of our beloved mods on duty ?
@Rinzwind +1, I would love a queue like that. It'd be much easier for a person to contact someone who knows or at least may know how to handle a question
@Jeremy31 Probably not legit. A lot of websites scrape stackoverflow and other sites to drive traffic to themselves to get that sweet add revenue. There's ways to report sites somewhere

I tried asking Thomas Ward on IRC but he must be away from the computer

Q: A site (or scraper) is copying content from Stack Exchange. What should I do?

PopsSince day one of Stack Overflow, all content posted on Stack Exchange sites by their users (i.e. you wonderful people) has been provided to the whole universe under the CC BY-SA license. For my fellow non-lawyers, that license basically means: Anyone can use any Stack Exchange posts at any time...

Sounds like a scraper to me

Check if they do attribution ( preserve answerer's names, questioner's name, etc ) and if they don't allow logging in. If they allow logging in and names aren't same as on askubuntu - report the site

8:44 PM
The names are the same as I did a search and found a lot of my posts
I am not going to try logging in, just in case it is there to steal passwords

You don't have to log in, just check if the login page opens
OK, from my side I don't even see an option to log into the site, so it is OK
Duplication of content is alright, so long as they provide attribution, and so long as users aren't required to share personal information

No login, but nothing says or links back to askubuntu

Hmm, fair point
@Jeremy31 I'll handle that

I know there is an Ubuntu reddit site that has AU questions, but when you click on those links you come to AU

@Jeremy31 That's perfectly fine. /r/Ubuntu actually encourages people to post on askubuntu and they don't usually handle questions/troubleshootings
@Jeremy31 what were some of the search terms that lead you to that site via google ( or another search engine if you use that ) ?

8:58 PM
Segiy, I don't remember what search, I was searching for how to install swift on ubuntu- checked my browser history
sergiy, whoops

@Jeremy31 OK, I've submitted a report. From there we don't have to do anything else - StackExchange will look into it and decide if the content is OK to keep
@Jeremy31 No worries, just use Serg , I tell most people to call me that

I reported an info site to Canonical legal last year because it looked exactly like ubuntuforums, less than a week later, the .info site was gone

9:14 PM
Thanks Sergiy,
later

Welcome
Sorry, I tabbed out - cleaning my inbox. 6k messages

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy sits on you
was there a reason you summoned us?

scraper site, I think

@Jeremy31 Actaully busy with work and video games :p
report the scraper site to SE with the Contact Us button

@ThomasWard throws down on the ground Yes, there's a reason. Unlock this post askubuntu.com/q/355012/295286 and remove the comparison tag. Then you can sit on me all you want

9:19 PM
mods can't do squat about scrapers.

Although maybe don't, because I have poor lower back
Also, I forgot to add "Please" to that ping message. Just FYI, I'm not trying to speak in a rude tone, just in case anyone misinterprets that
<3

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy um
that post has been merged an eon ago
unlocking it would cause headaches
i can just remove the tag myself
it's still locked but that's a merged post, a lot harder to unlock merged posts without flak
also APPARENTLY comcast hates me :P
just rebooted my net

hate them back

declares war on them

Yeah, I had some interwebs issues earlier, but I'm non comcast

9:30 PM
realizes there's no other ISP servicing this building

The internet is just bad lately

goes back to playing Ace Combat 7

Probably the botnets are on the rise

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy oh ALSO
this is what custom flags are for
so use them

@ThomasWard Yesh, yer mejeshty
That locked post just was preventing me from deleting the damn tag

9:31 PM
it's still locked :p
but keep in mind "locked" vs. "merged" - locks, we can work with, merges are system-imposed locks
and those're things we have to be careful with

Owl-right, so I just use a custom flag if I see a merged post ?
Where's the button to delete it ?
In other fun news, I am 5th top answerer for command-line tag apparently, dragging behind muru, oli, hemayl, and Radu
Gotta step up my game or something like that

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy still need anything?

@Seth Thomas handled it, thank you.
@terdon cc ^

I need to start figuring out how to deal with my email clutter,because this is kinda ridiculous
smoke, brb

If this is the place to abuse moderators, I will leave again

<humor>Technically it is not the place to abuse moderators, but we do need to whip them from time to time, just so that they don't forget who elected them </humor>

I am glad I didn't nominate myself, even though I had 0 chance. I am a moderator on ubuntuforums.org and forums.linuxmint.com

I ran for a moderator once, but didn't make it. I would run for a moderator on another site, but I already have plenty of things to do outside of the site

Serg with your reputation on here, you should have plenty of moderator level abilities
Did Jacob Vlijm get accepted as an Ubuntu member?

10:27 PM
I don't know, but I guess we'll find out
Technically, I could become a moderator, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people won't like my moderating style
I've views on things like new users, voting to close "off-topic" questions, and a few others - and these views don't exactly get a lot of support nor attention, though they work fairly nice for myself

10:47 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy That's the problem with being a genius: most people don't understand you.
(also a problem of being bat-shit crazy. Please coose your own inconvenience)
0:-) ;-)
Me, for myself, I'll choose bat-shit crazy any day!

@Fabby Depends on whos looking
To some people one is batshit crazy. To others - genius.
Either way, it's their right and I've sort of switched to letting people decide for themselves. Meanwhile I'll just do my best with what I have and with what I can do
Speaking of Ubuntu memberships, I should get mine someday
I've had my wiki page for a long long time

@Jeremy31 Did he attempt it?!
This is the first I heard.
oh damn
I see it in the starboard now
fuck

@Seth Apparently so, look at the star board

damn. Let me see if I missed it,.
I don't see an email about a new ubuntu member anyway.

I don't think we've missed it. Otherwise there would be a star congratulating him for getting the membership

11:02 PM
good point.
Yeah I just checked. He's not on any of the upcoming boards yet

@Seth Quick question, so what's gonna happen with Unity Tweak ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Well, as you know, I've been dealing with some shitty health issues for a couple of years now and the only other active team members have had things happen in their own lives, so it's pretty dead right now.
There's not been any active discussion about it, but I don't think anyone is motivated to work on it now that Unity is dead.
If a major bug pops up I'd be willing to attempt a patch but otherwise it will probably just go unmaintained along with Unity.

OK. That's what I was curious about. Unity is technically not supported, but still available

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Yeah. The API should be pretty stable. I think there are a few features that actually need to be removed but otherwise everything should work fine.
And I don't foresee anything breaking until Unity does.

Even though I've moved on from Unity, it'd be kinda cool if Canonical reanimated the project

11:08 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Unity or UTT? I'd freaking love to see Unity come back.
Best environment ever.

@Seth Well, UTT isn't Canonical's creation, so I was talking about Unity

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy gotcha. Wasn't 100% which you meant. I doubt it will happen, but I can dream..
I actually need to get Linux installed on this machine. Not sure what to use these days though. Literally nothing operates like Unity did :(

@Seth Give Deepin or Budgie a try.
I use Deepin

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I tried budgie a few years ago when it came out, didn't really like it. Although I should look again, it's been a while.

If you feel unsure about using a Chinese distro, the next best alternative is Budgie

11:12 PM
Not sure I've even heard of Deepin
I mean I know Deepin, but not the DE side of it.
I'll probably just end up on Kubuntu tbh
or OpenSUSE

@Seth Deepin is sort of Unity-ish desktop. There's a dock, and panel available for install from repos. The control center is a side-panel much like in Budgie, but I like it far better. I also tried budgie once, and it didn't stick for me
Deepin is also written in mostly C++ and Qt, although dbus and GSettings are used extensively. Desktop is based on GNOME originally, but by now it is vastly different
I actually really want to contribute to the distro and I've made a version of my Launcher List indicator for Deepin, but other things took priority lately
IDK, I have a lot of want things. Actually, I've been working on polishing my older software and adding features . . . well, sort of . . .researching so far before actually adding code and pissing of bunch of existing users
