Q: Why are instances of gnome-settings-daemon always running?

James BI have noticed recently that there are always instances of gnome-settings-daemon running as processes, why is this? And is it safe to disable them? The explanation from the GNOME Wiki is: [...] need a long-running process in the session. Some of these tasks are essentially just applying s...

It's weird, there are like so many guides online called something like "How to become a Vegan" or Vegetarian, but nothing about how to best become a Meat-eater/Omnivorous, so like if you have no clue about these things, but have to change due to health reasons, there doesn't seem to be much information out there about what you actually do. That is if you have no sense of what and how much of that what, to actually eat.

user136984
It turns out that running to your local sushi shop and getting lots of raw fish (especially as I have never actually had raw fish before), is a bad idea. But it's really the chicken that my stomach is complaining about.

user136984
Actually, I feel very very strange.

user136984
Maybe I have overdone it a little. I haven't had any meet in about 4-5 years now, so maybe this is a bit of a shock to the body...

Practically all my friends are either arses, or Vegans (somehow though not both, so far anyway). Or bad Vegetarians! Haha! :D :D :D

user136984
I have other friends but they are just non-contactable at the moment.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I figured. Nothing important, I just got your comment then so thought you're also on site answering so stopped by for chitchat.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Well it's good to say "hi" again in real time. It's been a long time since we chatted.
How is your 4 year university program completed over 7 years coming along? :)

Indeed :) Been a while. Eh, the university program is hopefully drawing to a conclusion. I'm taking 3 classes in fall, among which will be senior project 2 - building part. We're making network connected coffee maker
If everything is passed, I then have like one class left in spring and then I'm free

Great. I can buy you a coffee from Edmonton then :p

Hehe, awesome ! I'll go with some Tim Horton then

Tim Horton's is a Canadian Icon for sure.
As luck would have it I have to run out and buy some stuff for next week. So I'll catch you later!

6:27 PM
Alright, see you around !
@TheWanderer Oh really ? I must have missed that it's time ! sheds python skin in rush

Yeah, not the best Python joke. I might have forgotten to import humor

It's maybe a feature of Python 3.7 I gotta shed more to get all the modules

@traducerad And top of the morning to you, too , good sir ! :D
Yep, Ukrainian

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy from which city?

@traducerad it's why he's so weird

@traducerad Martanets. Not a city, but a small town near Nikopol

@TheWanderer Yep, I'm weird and I know it. Queue in that song

Cue

6:43 PM
speaking about queus
-thx for the segway btw-

segue
ppl pls

Segue ? O.o Seagulls ?

I am looking at /proc/net/udp and intentionally overflowing an application with udp datagrams. I can see many of them get lost. And I can see rq_queue increasing and stagnating at 00038700.
why this specific value? I'd expect to see a value which corresponds to whatever is setup in sysctl -a
@TheWanderer TIL hahaha :) , non-native speaker here

Segway is a brand
segue is the word

I thought the bird was the word

6:47 PM

You've net.ipv4.udp_mem there, maybe that's what's imposing the limit. Just a guess, I've no clue about UDP
Interesting enough, my last two comments were completely unrelated, but actually match nicely. Seaguls are birds after all. I still got my randomness touch :)

7:08 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yup
btw are you studying in the us atm or r u just joking?

Have you tried another microphone? And before you say "No, because I don't have one": try plugging in a headset without built-in microphone and shout into the "ears"... :PFabby 1 min ago
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy o/
Also: above is worthy of a star... I get sometimes exasperated at people not knowing how stuff works...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
To use clear communications in an international chatroom:
1. Don't use idioms
2. Don't use abbreviations
3. Don't use slang
4. Don't be politically correct.

@Fabby wat u mean bby

:D :P
@TheWanderer The first time I heard the word "firefighter" being used instead of "fireman" I heard "firefarter"
@TheWanderer I had to ask 3 times "WTF is a firefarter?" before the other person understood I'd never heard "firefighter" before...
It was only after I said "Oh, FIREMAN!" they said "That's a politically incorrect word..."
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Q: A way to export/import gpaste settings

Aurelijus RozenasTLDR: how can I export/import settings for gpaste? I am using gpaste on Ubuntu 18.04 with Gnome. @NathanOsman Meh, needs JavaScript and cookies... Interesting idea though to collect free data.

@NathanOsman I really dislike pages where you can't see anything without JS enabled, IMHO i consider this bad design
you can not see what the page is about without tearing a potential security hole wide open

----^ What he said.

@Fabby Hey Fabby. Long time no see. I was AFK just now. Well, AFP, since I'm on phone

:D ;-) :D
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy It's Sunday night and I'm surfing the Close Vote Queue and watching Space 1999 for the first time since I was a young teenager...
I remember it being "Wow!" when I was 12 and "meh..." now

7:34 PM
I could rewatch something, like The Great Wall movie. I've been watching a lot of Chinese TV series lately. Pity one of them is delayed, the channel I follow uploads like 2 episodes after 3 days of break :/
Which ia kinda annoying, but makes it even more interesting. I wanna know what's happening with the Fox Lord and his beloved human
1:36 pm here btw. Still haven't eaten. Probably will do eggs, bacon, and rice
From my teen years, I just remember Natalia Oreiro's TV series, Sailormoon, and a couple Ukrainian series. Maybe I could rewatch some of that

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy What? You didn't cook full breakfast for your girlfriends this morning?
;-) >:-) ;-)

@Fabby I'm single at the moment, so no. Piling bachelor dishes in the sink.
Well, it's complicated if we're talking about relationship.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy eggs, bacon and fried bread then: eat from the pan and no dishes to do...
:D ;-) :D
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Ah, you're dating a married woman...
;-) >:-) ;-)

@Fabby Lol, no. I once did though. Current interest is single, but dating someone else. And she's like 10 years older. Actually my first romantic interest was also 10 years older
Again, it's complicated

Yeah... She's single but dating someone else?
Or is that "trying to date someone else?"
stay around because you'll be second choice, but don't get into the friend zone...

7:44 PM
@Fabby Well, technically, her interest lives in another state. I'm on friends status, even though our common "friend" set us up for a blind date, and then we started hanging out occasionally

When "friend" comes over tell him to chat her up, then leave and push you into her arms...

And I probably shouldn't focus too much on relationship right now. Need to graduate, get a job, maintain paying mortgage with parents

I've done that multiple times...
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Well, that's important too!

Nah, she's got her own mind. No need for pushing. All adults.

8:12 PM
And done ! Did fried rice with wood ear mushroom, bacon, peas, and spinach, topped with onion powder, basil, and salt
And eggs of course, since it's fried rice

A: How to prevent root login from GNOME 3 login screen (Arch Linux)?

Paranoid PandaThis can be achieved as stated here by adding the following line: auth [user_unknown=ignore success=ok ignore=ignore default=bad] pam_securetty.so To these files (some may not already exist and have to be created): /etc/pam.d/gdm /etc/pam.d/gdm-autologin /etc/pam.d/gdm-fingerprint /etc/pam.d/...

user136984
Goodnight! All this chicken has tired me out! :D

user136984
@Fabby: I must be off before I turn into a bacon pumpkin! ;P

@ParanoidPanda :D :D :D
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy @Zanna might be interested in the recipe (minus the bacon and eggs)...

1 hour later…
10:11 PM
@Fabby Recipe is simple: toss in the rice, warm it up till it breaks down, then toss everything else, and fry till golden
It's not like I'm a master cook. I just fry everything together and hope for the best

That's how you become a master chef!
(eventually)

:3 I guess I'm on the right track then

also, this makes me sad and angry:
