Q: Does the search tracking and Amazon information sharing in attributed to Ubuntu part of Debian?

user9303970I understand from Richard Stallman in this video, made probably in or before 2013, that Ubuntu isn't 100% free by the GNU organization definition of Free Software, as according to Stallman there, it spies on users and also share the "spied" information with Amazon. I asked about it in AskUbuntu ...

Q: Voting to close your own question instead of deleting

WinEunuuchs2UnixTonight I voted to close my own question as a duplicate when I could have deleted both my zero voted question and self answer. The reason I did this was because my question title: Why does `journalctl --list-boots` only show the current boot? was substantially different than the duplicate target...

Q: Should I create a symbolic link to /bin/bash for user ssh?

GavinI am stuck trying to log in to my SSH server with a sudo enabled user; it authenticates and then stops and says: /home/username/bin/bash: No such file or directory I was following some instructions when creating the user, I don't believe it was set up wrong but this error makes me think it was....

Hey, I just installed 16.04 Ubuntu alongside my Windows. The problem is it says 'no network devices' where I would usually choose my Wi-Fi connection (on another Ubuntu laptop I have). Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this? Ive follwed some suggestions on forums but nothing has worked for me
ok last thing I just tried (installing updates in an earlier kernel) worked, thanks anyway :D

Q: New Ryzen laptop - suspend = panic, is a fix in the pipeline?

scytheAs though I had not had some 10 years of on-and-off Linux experience, I patiently awaited the release of laptops with the new AMD Ryzen "APU" chips, planning to install Linux, after speculative execution vulnerabilities made Intel look bad. So I bought the shiny new Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 13" AMD Ry...

Making a typo in that sentence is ironic :-P

Yo!
Man, I need to change this avatar, it scares me when I see it.
I have a question. What's our policy when people come here and they're clearly not on Ubuntu? e.g. Mint or some other non-flavour derivative? Do we have a published guideline for "Please find your own support avenue?"

Ugh, I'm installing Windows 7 in a virtual machine and 1 GiB of main memory is not enough for the lengthy update procedure.
@popey Questions like that are closed as off topic with a short explanation. Users can flag such questions, reviewers can vote to close them.

Close as off topic and point to U+L.

is there a link I can point someone to before they ask a question? :)

@DavidFoerster a minimum of 4Gb
@popey they should already get a sort of popup with some generic tips (incl. a reference to that) :P
oh and ->
Questions that you should avoid:

Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Backtrack, Gnome-Remix (prior to 13.04), budgie-remix (16.04 and 16.10) and other Linux distributions (try our friends at Unix & Linux Stack Exchange).

…and still tying for first place.

Hi @DavidFoerster :) Good afternoon :)

@cl-netbox Thanks. To you too!

@DavidFoerster Thank you :) What's up in Berlin ? Cold as here in the south ?

@cl-netbox Not during the day. It's relatively clear and sunny.

@DavidFoerster After a week or so of "dark grey and wet", today it's sunny here as well :)

@DavidFoerster I have seen some amazing things :) We had a dutch speedskater that qualified through the amateur games qualify for the olympics winning a gold medal. It was her THIRD official race and she does not have a sponsor yet.
Heck she is listed as a "student" and was just speedskating for fun _O-
That czech snowboarder winning the Super G was briljant too
Dutch shortrackers won the b-final with a world record. In the actual final for the medals all but #1 and #2 got a DQ so the dutch got a bronze medal. Never happend before _O-

Q: What is our stance on pad.lv URLs?

pomskyIt seems the Stack Exchange community as a whole "really, really hate" URL shorteners (source). But what's our (Ask Ubuntu community) stance on pad.lv, the "site-specific redirection service for Launchpad.net"? I found this service pretty useful while posting a link to a bug-report in Comments...

Q: Ubuntu 18.04 tracking a PC is still a "free software"?

user9303970I read this article. has anyone ever experienced the "Alt+Tab" menu simply disappearing sometimes? Guess it's the second time it happens
I can change between the apps normally, but it doesn't display the icons, not sure if I can reset some service without reseting the whole unity GUI to get it working again

@IanC I did never experience such behaviour, but I rarely use Alt+Tab… Btw, is this a WM or a DE thing?

@dessert I just noticed something even more odd, the icons still show when I hit Alt+Tab from the desktop, but not when I have a window already open (so it might be rendering behind the window)
what is a DE? WM I suppose is Window Manager?

@IanC Sorry, yes: DE = desktop environment (e.g. Unity), WM = window manager (e.g. Compiz)

Q: What is the difference between a desktop environment and a window manager?

ZolomonAs the title says. I'm having a really hard time trying to understand what the differences between a desktop environment and a window manager are? EDIT: This is what I found out later. There are basically three layers that can be included in the Linux desktop: X Windows – This is the founda...

I suppose that's important to know first if you want to resolve the issue.
I use Lubuntu and its defaults: LXDE as the DE and Openbox as the WM.

@dessert I see, I'm using the Ubuntu defaults, Unity/Compiz, but not sure which one of them is the source of the issue
I'd guess Unity (DE), because the Alt+Tab pop up seems a bit out of the WM responsabilities
can I reset Compiz without screwing my whole session? I know I can't do it for Unity.. Issues on Unity usually require at least a log out/log in
it's definitely some rendering layer issue, I can confirm the pop up is actually showing, but behind the windows

10:21 PM
@IanC save everything (of course), but IMO you should be able to restart compiz without screwing up everything
killall compiz
compiz --indirect-rendering --strict-binding --replace gconf &
gnome-window-decorator --replace &

I'll try it in a second, just gotta finish some work first so I don't risk losing it

10:37 PM
lol
I didn't even need to reset compiz, I closed a couple of windows and at some point the pop up started showing again
I guess it could be some issue with compiz then, maybe something screwed with the z-index of one of the windows, and it was covering the popup, but once I closed it the issue seems solved

@IanC It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers. ;)

@dessert what do you mean?

@IanC just a pun, that's the close reason I would have chosen if this had been a question on main ;)
went away on its own… we will never know :)

seems like I'm not the only one though
if it happens again I'll investigate further

11:12 PM
Finally hit lvl 8 @NathanOsman :D

that's an LG phone >_>
a budget LG phone

@TheWanderer sadly
my 5X bit the dust

flagship LG is probably worse quality

LG is supposedly fixing it, but we'll see.

the 5X?
yeah it'll work for 6 more months
and then back to factory

11:21 PM
@TheWanderer basically.
Too broke to replace it with a proper phone tho.

Honor 7X
you're on StraightTalk right?

@TheWanderer It was Tracfone, now it's Xfinity mobile.

dafuq

I don't really want to buy chinese.
@TheWanderer Like I said, I'm broke.

you bought LG; quality is worse than Blu

11:22 PM
@TheWanderer I also paid $1

and dammit, XMob is VZW
so no Huawei

And I'm not worried about quality.

if you're worried about spying, Huawei got caught for that already, and fixed it for intl models
you can also just unlock and AOSP

@TheWanderer Sorry, don't trust 'em. I'm not even sure I'd buy OnePlus at this point.

OnePlus isn't bad because of privacy
OnePlus is just bad at software

11:24 PM
@TheWanderer Everyone says that like it's easy. But no.

it's extremely easy on Huawei

@TheWanderer OxygenOS is pretty good bro
@TheWanderer Who maintains the builds?

@Seth on the surface, maybe, but don't try to do anything

@TheWanderer Define do anything
eh, or don't. I really don't care.

Are the LineageOS builds for OnePlus any good?

11:25 PM
@Seth XDA has an incentive program for Honor devices for people to build and maintain ROMs. Any Huawei device getting Oreo also gets Treble, which means instant bootable AOSP

If I could afford it I'd get the Moto X4 One edition, but I can't.
@TheWanderer ooh I forgot about treble.

besides the cameras, Treble is Huawei's biggest draw right now
because instead of trying to avoid it (Samsung, LG, OnePlus), they're completely embracing it

tho treble is still using manufacturer software, it's not AOSP

not really
it's only drivers
it basically removes the need for devs to shim and hack all the blobs and stuff in
like literally, one of the requirements for Treble certification is having the device be able to boot a generic build of AOSP, with at least basic functionality

hm, okay then.

there's a writer at XDA taking a programming course and they're making him learn C because it'll "help him with the other languages"

In other news the WhatsApp co-founder donated $50M to Signal. Yes, $50M.

which is probably about as true as saying someone who knows Latin will understand Spanish
@Seth that's a little ironic

@TheWanderer which is actually fairly true, so not a bad comparison.
@TheWanderer maybe? remember Facebook didn't always own it.

my friend who knows Latin can't understand any Spanish or Portuguese
@Seth well who sold it to Facebook?

11:32 PM
@TheWanderer well sure, but it wasn't a privacy orientated project to begin with. Not to mention selling your company isn't always as much of a choice as you might think.

true
maybe it's an apology :p
@Rinzwind with 40GB of DDR4 in it! You wouldn't even need RAM anymore
and it's more like 31TB o_O
I am not used to writing TB..
also, can we complain if the SE app hasn't been significantly updated since 2015?
