someone here likes to play chess?

too intellectual

This being Friday and all, I don't think my brain is capable of anything being quite so intellectually stimulating.

fair enough, I don't have a gaming PC so I'm kind of stuck with the intellectual games like chess, mines and solitaire lol

12:24 AM
Solitaire iz best itaire

Hi
Anyone here who could help me with a Ubuntu GPU issue?
Have been pulling my hair out

what is it

I have an old 2012 Imac. This model had overheating issues with the GPU. So in essence my GPU has failed.
I'[ve installed xubuntu on the system
but want to disable the Radeon drivers and switch to integrated graphics
I have not got any proprietory drivers
xubuntu used radeon out of the box
:-(

6:40 AM
does the imac 2012 even have an integrated gpu?

even if it has it doesn't mean it's connected to anything. it could effectively be disabled

While running OSX i was able to uninstall the drivers and managed to switch to integrated graphics but OSX limits video ram to 64MB
so the performance was paltry
^ 64MB on integrated graphics that is

ah, well then
you could try blacklisting the radeon drivers, i think
no idea if that will work though

rfts@RFTS:~$ sudo mousepad /etc/default/grub I've tried to edit that
But no luck

6:44 AM
it'd be /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

The blacklistfile contains the following
# This file lists those modules which we don't want to be loaded by
# alias expansion, usually so some other driver will be loaded for the
# device instead.

# evbug is a debug tool that should be loaded explicitly
blacklist evbug

# these drivers are very simple, the HID drivers are usually preferred
blacklist usbmouse
blacklist usbkbd

# replaced by e100
blacklist eepro100

# replaced by tulip
blacklist de4x5

# causes no end of confusion by creating unexpected network interfaces
blacklist eth1394
How do I blacklist radeon?

add blacklist radeon to the bottom of the file
do note that this may break your graphics config

okay
done.
Should I reboot the system?

you would have to, yes.

Thank you for the help. Rebooting. If I am not back in 5 minutes, I think I would have broken something
Nope
no go
didn't help

Q: REISUB cause hard disk IO error

drake01I just installed Ubuntu 17.10 , when I restarted by using Alt + SysRq + R +E+I+S+U+B, Ubuntu fails to boot, it show; Unexpected inconsistency and tells me to manually run fsck on /dev/sda2 the / of Ubuntu. Then it shows me busybox console where I run fsck. Why does it happen? How can I fix it?

you might also need to blacklist amdgpu

what is gksudo?

6:59 AM
sudo for the gui
(you shouldn't use sudo when executing graphical commands for a lot of reasons)

Not the least of which is that GUI apps should never be run as root.

10:43 AM
The only thing I hate more than unannounced Windows update with 1h downtime is the Ubuntu update which breaks everything and takes a whole day to fix it all

Oh, what went wrong?

e.g. default Ubuntu login session doesn't work (just returns to the login screen), though Ubuntu with Xorg is fine
but a major PITA is the wireless driver - I'm hesitating to ask on site, because there are several basically the same questions, and none compile. Is there any other possible answer except "wait until someone releases a compatible version/attempt to fix errors yourself"?
I'm using TL-WN722N / Realtek 8188eu
I've tried switching to connect using wicd instead of networkmanager, and it printed a bunch of ioctl[SOMETHING]: Operation not supported, and when compiling open source drivers it gives bunch of incompatible pointer errors (e.g. cfg80211_something instead of ieee_something, AFAIR), and referencing destructor (it suggests priv_destructor) inside some struct
too many breaking changes >.>

user136984
Isn't that a good thing to wake up to?

user136984
Good morning all! :)

wonderful indeed

11:40 AM
@ParanoidPanda Trump is still in charge :=)
@Luke ubuntu updates never take day to fix when they break something >:-)
I can have my system up and running from a total reinstall in 17 minutes :P

user136984
@Rinzwind: Yes, and he's still managing to insult people and not react himself.

@ParanoidPanda pandy! :=D

@cl-netbox: Hi! :)

Rinzy ! :)
@ParanoidPanda Hi ! :) Did you check out the new ubuntu already ?

"I believe he knew what he signed up to" is a pretty weird thing to tell a widow.

user136984
@cl-netbox: Not yet.

11:44 AM
@cl-netbox I switched to regular Ubuntu y-day

@ParanoidPanda Runs smoother than expected. :)

@cl-netbox not really

user136984
@cl-netbox: That's good.

well sure, I guess I could dig up an older kernel and hope it'd work with 17.10 (or 17.04 as a last resort), if nothing else works

user136984
Do you have GNOME 3.26?

11:45 AM
nvidia closed driver does not work

user136984
I think so.

@Rinzwind what is regular ubuntu y-day ?

most gnome extensions do not work on 3.26

@ParanoidPanda yup

@cl-netbox gnome 3

11:46 AM
@Rinzwind good idea :)

smplayer does not work. video plays on without any controls
lock screen stays active even when you tell it to turn it off
you can not close lid without wifi active
need to go on? >:)

@Rinzwind switch to x session :)

why?
how :+D

@Rinzwind because these things work there :)

the dock when on the desktop (so no active windows) goes OVER the icons on the desktop

11:48 AM
@Rinzwind logout - select ubuntu on x and log back in :)

@cl-netbox repeating: how? (from logon?)
though so >:)

user136984
I'm really happy that they are finally pronouncing G-NOME correctly! :D

@ParanoidPanda its gnome. like the leprechaun >:-D

I refuse to call it that
-end of discussion- >:-D

@Rinzwind did you find the logout option ?

@cl-netbox am I in AU chat?

11:52 AM
@Rinzwind are you drunken ? :D :D :D

@cl-netbox I don't do alcohol :=) so no

aha :D

settings->power-> wifi and BT. switching those to OFF should NOT immediatly kill wifi or BT.
someone messed up
turning those to off should kill wifi or bt when you have "blank screen" set OR when you have auto suspend set to ON.
(and you then black the screen or suspend the system)
why would we need TWO methods for killing wifi? The settings->wifi already has a "off"

user136984
@Avery: I ended up buying another plant as a replacement by the way which ended up being also quite poisonous, and given that the third plant I bought also turned out to be poisonous I have decided that the universe is trying to tell me something and I will just keep the pot plants I have and not buy any more unless I am certain that I know everything about them. I think Aloe Vera and a tomato plant is a safe option.

@Rinzwind suggestion : install gnome-session ... reboot ... select gnome on x ... login ... nearly all issues are gone ! :) you are using vanilla GNOME then ... :)

user136984
11:56 AM
I'm not sure why I'm messaging you about this.

user136984
But I'm not sure who else to tell really as I don't think anyone who is here now heard about that.

@ParanoidPanda I have 0 plants in my house :=)

user136984
@Rinzwind: Probably for the best, I ended up with some absolutely toxic heart stopping, immune suppressing and cancer causing plants that spread spores that make you feel ill and cause you to feel like you are on psychedelic drugs.

user136984
Because I didn't actually eat that one I am fine.

user136984
The spores or flying plantlets rather are as toxic as the main plant which looks like it's going to get up and eat you in the middle of the night. It's got a purple stem which goes into green tendrils which all have leopard skin patches of those colour variations on them.

12:00 PM
yuck!

user136984
It is called Kalanchoe Delagonsis. And its native name is "The Devil's Backbone", if I had known that name, I wouldn't have bought it! :D

user136984
But unfortunately the flower shop didn't know what it was.

user136984
And their suppliers didn't say it was poisonous.

@Rinzwind Have you seen what I suggested to you ? Please try it out - I know what I'm talking about ... I'm having vanilla GNOME on my fedora workstation and everything works without problems. :)

always go for a cactus
@cl-netbox fedora. tsk :=)

user136984
12:03 PM
Yes, I think so, I'm not sure that you can go wrong with them.

user136984
But I have a very interesting air plant which doesn't require soil so that is quite nice.

@ParanoidPanda yeah and free cactus drinks when you run out of tap water

@Rinzwind ubuntu. tsk :=)

user136984
It's just sits on a little glass thing on my desk.

user136984
And doesn't need more than a little mist every month or so.

user136984
12:04 PM
@Rinzwind: :D :D :D

@cl-netbox waiting for it to install :P
brb
@cl-netbox you made things worse! :=)
I hate black cursors :=)
say
ah well/
I want Unity back :(

@Rinzwind just try to get used to it ... I think after a while you'll like it and won't look back. :)
@Rinzwind you still can install unity if you want to ... :)

sigh

sigh

I know. But 1 thing I also aim for is a setup that does not require tinkering.
-> install system -> install smplayer -> done
(all I really use my system for is watching series)
<3

12:15 PM
@Rinzwind Well, I think in the next edition most things will be sorted out ... though wayland still needs a lot of work until everything works properly and as expected. :)

I know :=)

12:47 PM
coughs good morning ....

@ParanoidPanda no ... but it is still in the repos :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: I guess it depends on whether or not you do an upgrade or fresh install.

@ParanoidPanda no ... when you upgrade it replaces unity with GNOME :)

user136984

@ParanoidPanda really :D

user136984

@ParanoidPanda maybe I misinterpreted it and it installs GNOME alongside and only makes it the default session ... anyway, I strongly recommend a clean install (especially this time) :)

@Rinzwind I kept my Unity, haven't upgraded from 16.04 at all. Although budgie seems like a tempting alternative
@TheWanderer en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Itaire So you're saying old-french pronunciation is better than card game ? That makes sense ^_^

sup serg :) ?

@Videonauth hey, how's it going ? Long time no see

yep had a bit treouble in my real life and no real mood to chat or do anything online
came back for 17.10 thou

Yeah, I had my own troubles in last couple months as well, which lead to depression and anxiety and paranoia, but working through it. Answering questions was put on the back seat, because I didn't have passion for it, nor mental conditions or time.
I'm tempted to see how's 17.10 in VM but meh, I am tempted to switch away from Ubuntu completely

well then you half way can understand my situation
well i can tell you the live installer sucks
i installed vanilla-gnome-desktop on top of a server install
and forcefully removed ubuntu-session
roday i gone bare-metal on this concept and it works nicely

7:31 PM
Hmmm, I guess I'll just wait till next LTS release to see what's up. I'm not a fan of gnome tbh
I'm actually in openbox right now. Been a while since I've used it. Brings back memories

:D
well so far i cant really find something bad about gnome 3.26
as long i not mention the weird butchered canonical version ..

Tried Budgie so far ?

nope only seen screenshots of it
from what i saw there it does look nice and good composited

I used to have it in VM, pretty nice, has the side panel - I like that a lot. It's got a pretty clean look and feel. After news about Unity being discontinued were announced, I was considering going with Budgie.

yeah i tried to install unity on the new system works still like a breeze
but i then decided to go with gnome on X
fu** wayland

7:41 PM
I don't recall ever using wayland, but as far as I understand one can't do xdotool stuff in wayland, which for my purposes doesn't help.

on my side it was the obs-stuidio and screen recording etc what had me go back to X
there are nearly no good recorders there which work with wayland

Well, I've not been doing much programming lately. Taking parallel programming class, which supposed to be in Java and C++, but so far we haven't written a single line of parallel code, just theory and discussions on scalability and performance per number of processors

fun
also, you could make an app almost as bad as Facebook if you combine C++ and Java

Python skills got rusty but still there, still BASH-ing fairly well. Posted a couple answers here and there, and on U&L. Otherwise, nothing new in coding department
O.o C++ combined with Java ? Oh, the horrors

7:52 PM
mhm
pretty sure Facebook did it

Facebook pisses me off in another department - the messages. You can't view messages on mobile site, and using desktop version is a mess on phone.
And I don't wanna install the ever-spying app, so . . .bleh

kek
I just don't use Facebook

That's a better way to do it, but some of my contacts are only on facebook, which is sad kinda

get them on Telegram or something

How does Telegram work, by the way ?

8:00 PM
it uses your phone number to let you log in

I downloaded it once, but backed away when it asked my phone number, or something like that
OK, and how does that help with privacy ?

they don't market you

OK, at least that's a start

just don't use WhatsApp

I'm almost scared to ask why

8:03 PM
it's owned by Facebook

whatsapp is owned by facebook
:D

Great. Well, luckly I've only two people there, so nothing to worry about.
Anyway, I'll probably retreat to YouTube. I've been watching whole lot of people play Fractured But Whole. Hilarious game

oh theres the mainstream gnome user, i can ask him how to get rid of the white title bar of firefox :)
looks @ParanoidPanda

Heh, hi Panda !

user136984
@Videonauth: You mean that you have a dark theme and it isn't set there or something?

8:16 PM
yep i have a dark theme bud frirefox has a white title bar

1. why is gnome tweak not part of the default install.
2. why has no-one here suggested it to me?

ou hav not asked :p

I am disappointed :-DDDDDDDDD
@Videonauth how can one ask a question one does not know it needed to be asked?

user136984
@Videonauth: There should be a Global Dark Theme option in the gnome-tweak-tool that will do that.

just dont try to install dashtodock in the ubuntu-gnome theme, it will send you in a loginloop

8:17 PM
@Videonauth I installed one of them
and it works

i have hit that already only programm who disobeys is firefox

I have dashtodock working

me too, but im not using ambience :)
instaled gnome-desktiop
vanilla flavored

can I kill the extra bit at the top of firefox?
chrome/chromium have more space for the main area :P

user136984
@Videonauth: Which theme are you using?

8:20 PM
minwaita-vanilla-dark
but it does not matter if i switch to adwaita dark or adwaita default firefox does not obey :)

user136984
Have you done a restart of the session?

will try that now

mmm salmon

user136984
I'm on Arch so things are working as they should here. You're using a system Canonical has messed with. :P

the tweak tool had "suspend when lid close" active. That one was the one killing my wifi
the normal settings had "suspend" set to off too ...
but that did kill my wifi

user136984
@Videonauth: Glad I could help! :)
