12:36 AM
It goes back to Win 7

Lol.
It comes with two? :P

Hi guys.
dbus monitor for unity lock screen is giving me a headache. I have a script but I don't know where it's supposed to go... the websites are so vague :( Anyone have some clues?
Here's the script I built based on website sample:
dbus-monitor --session "type=signal,interface=com.canonical.Unity.Session,member=Unlocked" | \
{
while read MSG; do
logger "dbus-lock-screen-timer $MSG"
LOCK_STAT=`echo $MSG | awk '{print $NF}'`
if [[ "$LOCK_STAT" == "member=Unlocked" ]]; then
logger "Screen unlocked"
lock-screen-timer
fi
done
}

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong things.
That's way larger than what I was hoping for.
But Windows 10 Pro with 4 GB of RAM.

It's cheaper than buying Windows 10 pro.
134 bucks you can't go wrong... cheaper than raspberry pi when you add case, keyboard, mouse, etc.

"Windows 10 Home Premium"
What in the world is that?

12:52 AM
@NathanOsman I use to sell those when I worked at a computer repair place...there not bad computers for that 130-150 dollar mark...
but I would never buy a refurb myself...

You wouldn't buy a refurb. Dell PC?

I've had 5 good experiences with refurbs and only 1 bad. It's probably always a little risk, but in that one case the laptop battery was bad and not replaceable, which wouldn't apply here. I'm wondering what @TheXed 's reasons are.

@chaskes I am skeptical of used Hard Drives...
and used electronics in general...

Throw away hard drive, buy a 240 GB SSD

@WinEunuuchs2Unix but then your initial investment goes up to $230...

1:00 AM
You keep the SSD for 10 years though, probably longer.
You can buy another Refurb in 2 years with an I7 and swap the SSD into it.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix maybe...I have had a few die at work...

I told you not to wash it with coca-cola but you didn't listen!

Hey @TheXed:
Does that look like it's worth $10,000 to you?

@NathanOsman the additional 8gb SSD drive makes it a hell of a deal!

Oh for sure.

1:03 AM
All those USB ports don't matter because it's still serial with one controller / bus master. 2TB drive is nice but should have 1 TB SSD for 10 grand.

0_0
8 gb of ram?

That isn't even worth $900.

@NathanOsman pretty sure 10K will get you a 16 core xeon....

The largest SSD is now 156TB I think.

@JourneymanGeek I can get a 2U server with dual Xeon CPUs, 32 GB of RAM, etc. for less.

1:04 AM
yup

To be fair, it will be noisier though.
:P

Hey it even includes Windows 10! (not pro)

I should get Server 2012 R2 for that price.

lol yeah...

@JacobVlijm Can you help me? I need to place this script somewhere and I have no idea where to put it: dbus-monitor --session "type=signal,interface=com.canonical.Unity.Session,member=Unlocked" | \
{
while read MSG; do
logger "dbus-lock-screen-timer $MSG"
LOCK_STAT=`echo $MSG | awk '{print $NF}'`
if [[ "$LOCK_STAT" == "member=Unlocked" ]]; then
logger "Screen unlocked"
lock-screen-timer
fi
done
}

1:09 AM
ctrl k that

We should rename this place to "Windows 10 envy room" ... LOL
@Zacharee1 You want me to Ctrl + k something?

that code

I'll try
@KazWolfe It comes up with "Search Google" and focus moves to address bar of browser

dbus-monitor --session "type=signal,interface=com.canonical.Unity.Session,member=Unlocked" | \
{
    while read MSG; do
        logger "dbus-lock-screen-timer $MSG"
        LOCK_STAT=`echo $MSG | awk '{print $NF}'`
        if [[ "$LOCK_STAT" == "member=Unlocked" ]]; then
            logger "Screen unlocked"
            lock-screen-timer
        fi
    done
}
ick

^^^ Looks spiffy... Now just need @ Jacob and plea for help in prelude :)

1:12 AM
@JacobVlijm plas ^^

@JacobVlijm pretty please with an i-7 7700 on top

pls

with Windows 12 Super-Pro-Pro-Ehnaced, advanced, 256 Bit.

Are system builder editions eligible for running in a virtual machine?
It says something about being locked to a motherboard once installed.

1:14 AM
don't buy it

you can get an actual Windows 7 Ultimate key for about $10 less

How?

lemme find it

1:14 AM
(Is genuinely curious.)

@NathanOsman it will work, but I don't know if they are licensed for it...

(Has 3 broken non-genuine Windows 7 Ultimate on 3 drives on his laptop)

whoa If you purchase a new PC with a business version of Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 already installed by the manufacturer, the license agreement gives you the right to downgrade to Windows 7 Professional. So if your PC originally came with Windows 8/8.1/10 Pro, you can replace the installed operating system with Windows 7 Professional at no cost.

@NathanOsman pretty sure they are full retail keys...it is just the license that makes the difference.

^^^ look at my ctrl + k @Zacharee1

1:16 AM
noice
schmexy

@Zacharee1 yes, this is true, but some companies send you the install media, others make you order it...

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed 3 times on 3 drives with an invalid key.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix but in my experience, if you have install media and you install it on said device, it should activate after you downgrade it with no key...

1:18 AM
So they boot up with black desktop and nagging messages

@Zacharee1 that's for businesses.

@TheXed Downgrade to what? Windows Vista?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix is it a legit key?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well that would certainly be a downgrade...

@TheXed It used to be legit when Dell techs installed it but then key became OEM internet persona non-grata.

Do the phone activation....
it is easy, and you talk to a machine...

1:20 AM
I tried that. I talked to a person though. He said call Dell but they charge when off warrantee period so might as well buy again.

@NathanOsman this might be where I got mine microsoftonlinestores.com/windows-7-ultimate-sp1-p-54.html
lemme keep looking though

In mean time Windows 8 key is burned into motherboard EEPROM so I installed Windows 8.1 instead but I don't like it as much as 7.

Hmm...I have never talked to a person when I have done the phone activation...

Just keep pressing 0 :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no...you don't want to talk a person...
the machine is to stupid to determine what your actual license is...

1:22 AM
Contrary to popular belief I don't mind people all that much :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah but they are smart and you don't get what you want :-P

@NathanOsman also this bonanza.com/listings/…

@TheXed sigh I think I'll just give up on Windows 7... so much to learn in Ubuntu anyway.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I would give you a key if I had one...M$ would frown if I gave you my VLK...

Besides I asked for transfer at work to Windows based database which would come with whole new world anyway.

1:25 AM
MS probably wouldn't care
any way to get you on Windows 10
even if it means installing 7 and using the accessibility upgrade path

wait!

@TheXed I'm too radioactive to use someone elses Volume License Key :p

You have windows 8.1 you an use the accessibility app to upgrade to 10

yeah

@WinEunuuchs2Unix or I could just give you my old computer...

1:27 AM
I wanted Windows 7 for game compatibility though... Not sure if Windows 10 would play games better than windows 8.1.

but shipping is expensive...

lel
just buy the Bonanza key

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Windows 10 has been awesome for gaming...

unless you have lower grade Intel graphics

@Zacharee1 well we can't even say that is Windows fault...

1:28 AM
Third Gen I-7 HD4000 plus nVidia GT650M

@TheXed Windows 10 literally doesn't support the driver for Intel HD 3000

Hybrid without 4 wheels

works fine in 7
and 8.1
but not in 10

@Zacharee1 if it works on 7 and 8.1 it should work fine in Windows 10...same kernel...you just have to ignore the warnings...at least that is the way it was with my Radeon 4850 HD

@WinEunuuchs2Unix scrub. I have 4th gen 4600 and 950m

1:29 AM
Mine cost $2500 new but I bought it $400 used, so tease all you want :p

@TheXed nope. It'll install but it won't work. I got like 7 FPS in MC when I got ~30 in 7
@WinEunuuchs2Unix $850 new

@Zacharee1 that is like awesome FPS!

lol
with my 950m I get 300 on a good day

@Zacharee1 Then I'll buy yours $200 used :p

usually around 100
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nop

1:31 AM
Is that the UWP version?

@Zacharee1 not yours as in "YOURS" but yours as in one like yours from someone around here.

nop
@TheXed wat

Universal Windows Platform...aka Windows Store...

no
Java
idk how to tell FPS in the C++ version

I haven't played Minecraft in years...

1:32 AM
scrub

I don't even remember my password

never played Minecraft... never will... waiting for Mass Effect Andromeda written here in Edmonton!

@TheXed 1234

No...

1234567890

1:34 AM
@TheXed "password" like Hillary's campaign chairman.

"pencil"

Turns out it was a lone-wolf shooter last night after all.
google should be able to find them based on their searches.

Minecraft does not like my computer

it's Java
what do you expect
Java is like the cat of programming languages

Maybe fabby can fine-tune your nvidia

1:41 AM
Oh...I don't have Java installed...
I am tempted to keep it that way...

@Zacharee1 back from supper.
So...
Are those sites legit?

Bonanza is
can't remember where I got my key from originally
but it might have been the other site
and if you do buy the key you'll probably need to do phone activation

Ah.
Bonanza does PayPal.
So in theory, I should have purchase protection if there's a problem.
Not bad. Not bad at all.

they both do PayPal
and the last time I bought a key it was $45 not $31
so lucky you

Well, at that price, it may work better to buy the OS separately from the PC.

1:55 AM
yesh

Nopenopenope.

wat ?

watt=amp x volt

wot iz

or amp squared times resistance

1:58 AM
V=IR
See - I know everything there is to know about electricity.
:D

:D yup, you can readily go into electrical engineering
so what did i miss here in chat ?

I'm trying to spend the absolute minimum on a Windows PC for my build farm.

Put a plug into wall socket. Pull it out 1/8" and drop a pin over the two prongs. Learned that in grade 4. All you need to know.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix That is a sure-fire way to trip a fuse.

Nice light effects though.

2:01 AM
But then I'm on the hook for import duties.

x86? yuck
that's so 1990s

I know that.

might as well get Windows 95

But until Microsoft releases Windows for ARM and everyone else uses it, I'm stuck.

Windows Mobile
:D
but why not x64?

2:05 AM
That's what I'm trying to get!

@NathanOsman how do import duties work?

@JourneymanGeek I wish I knew. All I know is UPS shows up with the package and asks for xyz amount of money for duties.

is there an exempt value?

I have no idea.
The last time this happened it was with a (roughly) $150 item.

@NathanOsman I'm confused

2:07 AM
@Zacharee1 x86 doesn't mean 32-bit in this context.

oh good

It's a generic term for CPUs that run Intel's x86 and AMD's x86_64 instruction set.
Yes, a bit confusing, but everyone does it :P

that's stupid

Yes. Moving along...

nubcakery
5

2:08 AM
Indeed.

You know those moments when you have the "OMG, this is a totally cool feature i could add to my indicator /app/script " moments ? Yeah, i love those

hue

Hue indeed

Huey

apparently the name Hui is pronounced hue
so we have a new hue

2:14 AM
Speaking of which. What manner of nubcakery is this?

Isn't Huey short for helicopter?

@NathanOsman High Nubcakery

That's a stupid long URL.

that's security
it's so long no one can read it

2:15 AM
There may be some personal information in there somewhere. Have at it :P

nevermind security by obfuscation being terrible

If a black hat fellow wants to enter that by hand, go for it.
:D

OCR bb

Oops. I've been nubcaked.

omg

2:20 AM
@serg I know you are a gsettings expert but do you know anything about dbus-monitor?

Now added to the official meme list as a Perfectly Valid Variant.â„¢

can we make nubcake an actual AU badge

nubcake should be a nominated / voted thing :p
only you can't tell the winner cause it hurts feelings...LOL

@Zacharee1 plz

like if someone makes a mistake

2:22 AM
What constitutes a mistake?

guessing wrong.

so if the system sees them comment "oops" or something, they get the badge
or if you get banned from reviews
or maybe just fail three audits idk

That happened to Zanna briefly.
Seth undid the ban though

mods can lift review bans?

It was a software ban because she was closing too quickly.

2:26 AM
huehuehue

He reversed it after querying her why she voted a certain way on a vtc.
But that was so 2016 and hard to remember.
Like Dec 5th.

Add $40 for the Win7 license and it comes to about $200.

2GB RAM?
what's this for

@NathanOsman why windows 7?

Build farm.

2:28 AM
whats that mean

@JourneymanGeek Anything that runs Visual Studio 2015 and is cheap.

@JourneymanGeek Aero

dosen't really matter there tho
just leave the OS as is

@JourneymanGeek It doesn't include the OS.
At least, not according to further down on the page.

ah!
dodgy chinese pirate keys

2:29 AM
@Zacharee1 I write software for multiple platforms. I need PCs for each platform to build the software and test it.

hue
@NathanOsman I guess 2GB would be enough for that...

@NathanOsman I wonder if a current gen intel 'stick' would work

And I have Win10 on my desktop but I don't boot it much and I'm not leaving my desktop running 24/7. Not with a 750-watt PSU :P

I thought initally that the 2GB + 32GB + 128GB in the title meant 2GB VRAM, 32GB RAM, 128GB sotrage

@JourneymanGeek They are too expensive - and no RJ45.

2:30 AM
true

So I'd have to add an external ethernet card.
@Zacharee1 Nope :P

hi

@NathanOsman which would've been great for $150

@NathanOsman low power usage settings...

the RJ45 is the sticking point here ._.

2:31 AM
I have an EC2 instance with 1 GB of RAM and it runs fine.
Granted, that's with Server 2012 R2.

pity you arn't local XD

2012 R2 is Windows 10

I have some spare hardware that might work
10 runs well down to 1gb of ram with fast storage
We run a few c2d laptops with that much and dodgy chinese SSDs

Windows 10 on 1gb of RAM?

lol
yup
32 bit

2:35 AM
Yikes...

Singaporean bashing China

actually since I needed to upgrade for the SSD anyway...
@Zacharee1 the SSDs are dodgy and chinese branded ;p

you also said dodgy Chinese keys
tsk tsk

I think this is the models
@Zacharee1 apparently manufacturers there just image, test to see if it works, and ship

hue

2:36 AM
Well time to start playing violent video games now that the kids are in bed.

I'm not being racist. I'm being factual ;p
Those SSDs are odd cause they have minimal cache

@JourneymanGeek This is typed to you from a dodgy Kingfast China SSD 128 GB mSata ... like 70 bucks tax free.
plus free shipping!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm running something like that
I also have a similar msata drive on my linux box

I only devoted 30GB to this Ubuntu 16.04 partition though.

m.2 ssd FTW! btw...

2:46 AM
lol
I have one on my laptop
my desktop refresh is put back cause the damn thing runs fine. ;p
(and I really shouldn't for now)

3:08 AM
He-he-hey.... this looks pretty good: tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/…

@NathanOsman oh, yeah
NUC class machines are <3

But. I can't find the specs for that model.

I would recommend my bebox, but I donno if they still make em

I originally thought I had found them on Asus's website.
But I'm not so sure now.

3:14 AM
Could someone (in theory) install Windows on this? ncix.com/detail/shuttle-xpc-nano-atom-z3735g-1b-119802.htm

new prank idea: Get a USB of Windows 95 and plug it into this in someone's computer:
make sure you update the boot order.

Lol.
They'll be stuck too since there are no modern browsers available for Win95.
Okay, maybe some obscure version of Opera, but still.

hm
I think the closest thing to a modern browser would be k-meleon
assuming it still works
also, windows 95 might not have USB support

3:31 AM
The later versions did.
(OSR 2.1)

@JourneymanGeek true, but someone else said they got it work, but they just plugged theirs into the back of the PC.

unrelatedly I'd try k-meleon but the download page dosen't work

so I upped the level of tricky >:)
@NathanOsman maybe that should be George's next video. I've heard windows 95 is more secure because no one is using it >:)

@Seth I don't have a Windows 95 CD.
Only Windows 98 SE.

@NathanOsman I suppose they could but you would need some BIOS access.
I have 98SE ISO files

3:40 AM
this should be fun

@NathanOsman close enough ;p

3:56 AM
@NathanOsman heh. opera 9.64 and k-meleon 1.5.4 vaguely work on my win98 vm
neither gets past the SE chat loading screen tho

What about newer Firefox editions via KernelEx?
Gonna give this a try.
