5:04 PM
whoa really?

It does look cwispy tho

5?

sighs and the message i posted got lost and propably not nees at all ;)

@Videonauth I fixed that for you :) it's on star wall now

thanks
this book entered public domain it seems since it on archive.org
but its a still valid and good book

5:07 PM
I've had this book for a while, and used it for implementing a number to word converter for one guy like 2 years ago @Videonauth good stuff :)
OK, so now that I have Quartus installed, all I need is to get my dev board. Goodbye 175 $ T_T
@Zacharee1 @ByteCommander how's that ?
Maybe we should make it squarer ?

If the lines were less bacon-wavy, it would be better, but it's okay for me.

I like that they're wavy, but they're kinda non-symetrical. Symetrical would look better
@Zacharee1 OK, final request: squarer shape, symetrical wavy lines, and that's it. Let's get it over with
I'll still have to edit the deb package and the indicator itself to include the icons

5:22 PM
If anyone here happens to have a score of at least +5 in and wants to vote on making virtual-terminal a synonym of it, I encourage you to do so.

Q: These tags are [virtual-]ly the same!

Eliah KaganRight now we have separate virtual-console and virtual-terminal tags. One should be made a synonym of the other, but which one should be the master tag? We have another question on meta about this, posted well over a year ago, but it has languished unanswered and also seems like it's asking abou...

@EliahKagan Done, thank you.

@jokerdino Great -- thanks!

@ByteCommander what ?

I'm just going to leave this here

Q: How to list all my contributions

HölderlinI like to list all the questions I involved but each question should listed only once. If I want to see a list where I contributed a comment, answer or question I have to go to all actions. There for I get a list where each entry represents a action and I want a list like this, but unify this lis...

Anybody knows how to set icon for indicator when status is set to PASSIVE ?

@Serg I think you can only set an icon for Attention status. Doesn't the passive status icon is the same one used on the active status?

@IanC well, let me test. I think it does use the same
@IanC it doesn't even show up if I set status to PASSIVE at startup :/

the indicator doesn't show?
I never used the built in status on indicators, think once I used the attention, but I don't remember it doing anything other than changing the icon to the "Attention Status" icon
why do you need the passive status?

There's times where my new indicator is in "disabled" state sort of

6:27 PM
@Serg I see, why don't you do the idle state internally? I don't know up to what point those app indicator states are really useful, not sure if there is a difference (other then the subtle change of icons, or hiding) that makes it worth using them
like, ignoring the indicator status, just maybe changing icons so the user sees the indicator is idle?

I think in this case the opposite of "active" is "inactive".

Well, either way, I guess I'll have to switch to ATTENTION state
Changes are on github already anway

7:14 PM
@ByteCommander Yeah, sorry! too many downvotes... @Zacharee1 was right: didnt go well.

lol what did you ask

@Zacharee1 Deleted it.
@edwinksl I wanted to have a /shrugh command
@NathanOsman In what case is the opposite of "active" not "inactive"???

shrug command would be nice
i am too lazy to copypasta that

Often "passive" is considered the opposite of "active."

:) True! Thanks...
anyone any close votes left?

7:31 PM
done

Thanks! :)

I need to get PhotoShop and a tablet...

An Ubuntu Tablet or a Graphics Tablet?
;-)

Gimp is getting a lot of features in the upcoming 2.10 release.
GEGL, GPU acceleration, 16 and even 32-bit color channels, RAW import...

7:48 PM
when are we getting that

@ByteCommander What were you going to say to the /shrug command?

I had posted it in chat below my reply message.
Scroll down in the history below my ping.
Basically to use v(^_^)v or better \_(^_^)_/ instead, which is directly typable on most keyboards

8:07 PM
Good grief. I've started getting recruitment spam through github.

@Seth High-paying jobs or menial jobs?
;-)
@ByteCommander Thanks! \_(^_^)_/

@Fabby Didn't bother to find out. But considering the sad state of my GitHub profile I'm not impressed that I was contacted.

Meh. too complicated to type on my keyboard.

Yeah, the double-backslash remains an issue there...

I'll stay with copy-paste
◔_◔

8:12 PM
@Fabby Request an indicator that automatically inserts all unicode emojis you need to your clipboard from @Serg

@Fabby you know, I once wrote a userscript that added a shrug button next to the upload button in chat.

@Fabby @ByteCommander I can do that :D

:D

I wonder if I still have a copy of that anywhere.

@Seth now that would be nice!!!

8:13 PM
Actually . . . you can use the one I wrote for @ByteCommander already !

but you can also use this:

Q: Frequent Message Manager - Easily store and send frequently used messages in chat?

Nathan Osman Screenshot About Have you ever said something in chat that made you think "I know I've said this many times before?" Perhaps you have a few common links that you reply to questions with on a frequent basis. Well now you can save yourself the trouble of digging them up everytime you need ...

¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
Ooops . . .well , that's interesting

Screw encodings.
You use Py2 or 3?

Py3

Strange...

8:17 PM
By the way, you can do ./clipboard-autoedit-indicator debug
to see diagnostic output

@Seth Cool! Installed! Thanks @NathanOsman

how do you guys get the panel at the bottom?

Q: Can I move the Unity launcher?

BenjaminI can’t get used to the new Unity system. I’d like to move the left Unity panel to the bottom of screen (like Windows 7 – more similar is better). But I can't find a way. Is it possible?

8:20 PM

thanks @kaz!
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher launcher-position Bottom
will this work on 12.04?

> As of 12.04 you can not move the launcher, and there’s no official support for that.
hmm. should i try to repcap or just play no man's sky

OK, I think I had to remove something unnecessary from the indicator
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Yep, it works now

You forgot the arm.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8:32 PM
hmmm. "earned 78 reputation from suggested edits"
that's disappointing.

THIS [7220][clipboard-autoedit-indicator] IS A TEST
Works , sweet

@Serg You should really change your LP username to something memorizable though...

@Fabby what did i do?

8:37 PM
I just upvoted your stored messages app

Oh, the message manager.

@ByteCommander -____- but I dunwanna

And I dunwanna put a post-it sticky note with your QQ number on my monitor.

8:40 PM
hi, @ThomasWard. Your lazers are nothing compared to my wifi card.

Or borrow the silver towel from my electronics professor. He recently wrapped that around our WiFi AP in class to shield its radiation.
I actually never heard of the unit decibel-milliwats before though...

Also, that'll break some of my older answers @ByteCommander

dBm (sometimes dBmW or decibel-milliwatts) is an abbreviation for the power ratio in decibels (dB) of the measured power referenced to one milliwatt (mW). It is used in radio, microwave and fiber-optical networks as a convenient measure of absolute power because of its capability to express both very large and very small values in a short form. Compare dBW, which is referenced to one watt (1000 mW). Since it is referenced to the watt, it is an absolute unit, used when measuring absolute power. By comparison, the decibel (dB) is a dimensionless unit, used for quantifying the ratio between two values...
^ has a list of dBm values, what they mean in mW and an example what is that strong
The list ends at this though:
80 dBm 100 kW Typical transmission power of FM radio station with 50-kilometre (31 mi) range

my wifi chip is officially god, apparently. cool.

8:44 PM
What are you guys doing ?

@ByteCommander click the wolframalpha link aboveµ

I did.

@Serg We're not doing anything! @KazWolfe is irradiating the Earth with half of the power of the sun!
:D Luckily he's a wolf or he'd be sun-burnt by now!

I blame broadcom.

@KazWolfe Starred!

8:47 PM
lucky that's not my wifi network :D

So if there are any irregularities and luminous phenomenons above the North American continent at the moment, this is not Trump's glory shining over the country, but only Kaz's wifi chip going mad...

@ByteCommander Starred!

Good signal for wifi is around -30 dBm. If it's around -80dBm it sucks. End of story

Can I get one of those cards? It might help with signal falloff in my apartment...

Also, is this time to spam starwall ?

8:48 PM
@Serg so, 200 dBm?

@KazWolfe i found a new laser :)

@NathanOsman buy it from eBay from a Chinese reseller.

@KazWolfe -200 dBm wouldn't work. Like it's out of range

Goodbye earth.

@Serg +200 dBm.

8:48 PM
-90 is already terrible and suckish
@KazWolfe where have you seen that ? Signals for WiFi are usually rated for negative values

is it star something in chat time of year?

Yes.
3

:D

8:50 PM
yes, it is. Watch:
.

@KazWolfe That's your wifi's transmission power. Wifi signal is -54 dBm. It's right there in your output

:D Smoke! BRB

@KazWolfe the wifi signal you get from the actual system is the 54dBm. Not the transmission power you saw.

@Serg okay, but nothing about a TX power of 200 dBm raises the slightest alarm flag in your head?

@KazWolfe nice try.

8:51 PM
@Serg my experience is -60 is fine. I've never gotten above -45

@KazWolfe it raises intense burning sensations in my head.

@KazWolfe um . . .actualy it does . . . too high of a value . . . Mine is at 5 dBm right now O.O
@Zacharee1 I get -32 dBm at home, channel 8

illegalz

@KazWolfe I think your AP just popped up in my wifi scan list... Can I haz password? Much better signal than my own.

8:52 PM
@Serg weird

;-) :P

@Zacharee1 what kind of router is it ? bgn ?

aww, steam doesn't onebox.

AC @Serg

@ByteCommander nice try, my laptop isn't broadcasting anything.

8:53 PM
@Zacharee1 weird indeed

but this is a general experience from different APs

Meh...

Well, come to Denver. We have higher WiFi signal . . . mile high . . . badum tsk

wait. my laptop is far over the 1.21 gigawatts required to time travel.
so.. brb going back in time.

@KazWolfe surprisingly violent for a cat game :D

8:54 PM
@Serg tsk

@KazWolfe See you yesterday!

Speaking of time travel, there's a Portal mod that lets you travel back in time. So you can interact with your past self in-game to solve puzzles.

@KazWolfe those 90s 3D graphics though

okay.
@NathanOsman, go The Bridge and ask about Bad Rats.

I also need a new dark full theme for firefox. My old one started to not play well with all kinds of popups and menus... Can anybody recommend something that doesn't mess up geometries?

8:56 PM
Chrome

Bing!

Dong!

that's (thankfully) not a browser @KazWolfe

tosses sticks at everyone in the room

8:57 PM
Ouch!
throws back

@Zacharee1 plot twist , Microsoft soon will release Bing Browser

@ThomasWard catches stick and brings back

pls

@ThomasWard throws the stick back in Thoma's face

@KazWolfe tosses the stick further, using an air cannon

@Serg watches the stick bounce off his personal force field

@ThomasWard goes and gets the stick, and brings it back again. Fetch is fun!

@KazWolfe A browser actually has to be able to open search results internally

@KazWolfe puts the stick into an interstellar torpedo casing, and fires it off into space at five times the speed of light

@ThomasWard whines

8:59 PM
yall are weird

yes we are

@Zacharee1 And?
MODS!!!

what

orbital strike prepared

@Fabby probably

9:00 PM
:34946392 Fabby has dirty mind confirmed.

@Zacharee1 unlikely...

@ByteCommander

I once applied for a job at Dong Energy

lol

ololol

9:07 PM
Now the domain name doesn't point to their site any more, but at the time, the Italian PowerGen company had it's .it domain name hijacked, so they took a .com address, but still wanted to be known as an Italian company, so they took as domain name:
powergenitalia.com
(Italia being Italy in Italian)

nice

One that was posted on reddit their server was hammered so hard they had to take it off-line.
@ThomasWard Why did you remove the link to a dictionary site?
:O :O :O

recursion at all

How to annoy Trump haters: Point out that Obama removed Bush's malaria initiative page.

9:25 PM
@Seth Thanks for the link!

Trying the FT DeepDark theme for my Firefox for a while... addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ft-deepdark

looks sick

@Zacharee1 wat

@Fabby flagged... but no other punishmeht

9:48 PM
@ThomasWard no i wasn't.

:P
@KazWolfe a blame command pointed your name :)

@ThomasWard of course.

Wow! Even explanations on the English language to foreigners get flagged nowadays...

huh
what got flagged

a link to the urban dictionary
explaining the word that ByteCommander didn't know what it really meant...

9:54 PM
ridiculous

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i think byte knew what it meant.
plus, there are a few other common words in this chat that should probably have an urbandictionary link thrown at.

You'd be amazed what people don't know...
I once had an American female boss who asked "Is it OK to wear pants into the London Office?"
Reply "That's completely up to you."
she was asking if it was ok or not to wear underwear into the office... (Pants = abbreviation of panties)
I once said on a conference call "Cut the chit-chat guys, I'm dying to get a fag outside"
Not knowing it was the abbreviation of something else in the USA
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(obviously fag = cigarette)

10:14 PM
Huey...

brb rebooting to windows. wanna play gaem

@KazWolfe windows????

10:31 PM
@KazWolfe says the person that nagged me for playing WoT on Windows...

I'm sorry if I'm asking a question about debian, but this seems like a relevant enough chatroom. I'm trying to install debian on a laptop, on which I previously had ubuntu with everything working fine. After trying various ISOs (including firmware, looking at sid, testing, and stable), it always starts with looking for a link on eth0, never asks me to select a wifi access point
every time I kept on going through the install, at least up to where it asks for the mirrors, but even then, it can't reach them, and still doesn't ask
so I kept on going with the bare basiscs install, and am now in the root shell, so I can check some more system info. # ifconfig wlan0 up gives the error wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device, which didn't help me much through google
and ifconfig only lists eth0 and lo
any clues to what it might be and how to fix it?

WoT??
And I am just joshin'

WoT?
oh

moved here because debian is only better than ubuntu ;) unix.stackexchange.com/questions/339384/…

10:53 PM
@towc the chat room is more flexible than the site
the site abides by the help center rules for what is on topic, and Ubuntu and official derivatives are on topic. Debian is offtopic as are unofficial derivatives of Ubuntu.

yeah, sure, dw :)
just thought I'd try

what kind of screen protectors do people use?

@towc if you don't want to keep the thing, you can delete the question, or leave it be because it'll get pruned eventually

@Seth I don't.

@ThomasWard fair enough

10:55 PM
Gorilla Glass should be good enough.

I think I'm gonna give these a try:
@NathanOsman Ok.

$5? Hmm...

@Zacharee1 most others are only $1 or $2 more. It's not the price I'm going on.

@Seth why are they so cheap?

11:12 PM
Skyrim SE on Ultra High running at 60fps is pretty damn amazing...

11:28 PM
Which card did you finally go with?

@NathanOsman I went with the Asus GTX 1050...
It is entry level, but I figured as overpowered as this beast is...in a few years I can always upgrade the GPU if I need to...

Not bad.
Here it is stacked up against mine: gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270X-vs-GeForce-GTX-1050

Very comparable...

Yes.

@Zacharee1 because it's like a few slips of glass?
So I look at next week's assignments for one class: 1 chapter, 5 labs, a few videos, 1 quiz. Due on the 29th. Not bad, this will be easy. Then I realize I have another chapter, 13 more labs and another quiz due the next day >.<
Oh, and make that 5 videos..

11:46 PM
ez pz 4 seth

@edwinksl 1 class ed. I still have 2 other classes.

the real question is whether you will clear AU flags fast enough

@edwinksl tru
