Slightly improved my code, although I still need to work on dealing with pipes. Apparently you cannot use seek() function on pipes, only on files

Is this for tails?.... just go to EOF and read backwards.

That's exactly what my tail implementation is doing - it reads the file backwards with the seek() function, but like I said - I can't do it with pipes. And if I read everything from the top, line by line, it's going to take hell long of a time
Last time I tried to cat 29 million lines of text, took about 40 minutes or something

@Serg that's weird, I'd think all the functions for working with files would work with stdin

5:06 AM
@IanC that's the trick - a pipe isn't a file. It's a buffer

yeah, but files are treated as buffers when you handle them, so I thought there would be a seek equivalent for it too

Well, it's not a big deal. I'll probably end up having two functions - one for dealing with files, and one for dealing with pipes

I've written a bit more to my .vimrc for C files, if you want to take a look and maybe use it too, it doesn't have much so far but there are some small shortcuts you might find useful @Serg

@Serg You could always cheat... extract the tail C code and translate it into Python.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hehe, I actually have that. I have source code for all GNU utils. But I only reference it when I feel like I've no idea what I'm doing. It's more fun trying to figure it out on my own though
@IanC Sure, I'd be glad to take a look, although I don't code in C that much lately

5:12 AM
assuming this is an adult room... when search for a piece of tail why reinvent the wheel?

But I swear, coding in general, be it C or Python, keeps me sane. I was absolutely down a few hours ago, and after working on my tail script I feel so much better

maybe you can figure something similar for python, I don't code on it so it's a bit harder to figure out some useful shortcuts for it

I see you added mappings for parenthesis and square and curly brackets. That's one of the things I always wanted to add and never got around to it. Awesome @IanC

@Serg yeah! I was first using a single {, ( or [, but then it would break the g key map, so I mapped it to a quick {{, (( or [[ :)
maybe for Python you will have to change a bit the curly brackets map, because now it makes the C code block, I think you're going to use it for lists?

Well, curly brackets will go for dictionaries. What I think would be really useful is mapping for inserting "def " phrase
I think I'll need to learn a bit more about pipes in order to work on my tail script
This is getting eggs-citing

5:22 AM
@Serg BAWK

@Serg you could add map! dd def at the end maybe, or some other key you don't use

I am trying to do something most folks don't generally do. i wanna dual boot ubuntu standard and then ubuntu studio. this machine has an efi partition that I must say I do not understand at all.

and you were able to pop in here for a year ^-^

Oh, well, I guess I just checked my notifications.

6:53 AM
As for Ubuntu Studio/whatever, as long as you have a separate partition for Ubuntu Studio set up, GRUB will typically take care of things.
so for the most part it should just be a standard install, provided you have the partition ready.
The two Ubuntus can share swapspace without much issue.
though, if you don't mind my asking, why do you need Studio and regular Ubuntu? Why not just install the needed apps on the one version you have?

Well, I throw KXStudio on top of ubuntu studio so I can use cadence and carla to manage jack. It ends up being a little more customized than I want my daily work partition being.

ah, makes sense. But yeah, two Ubuntu installs can coexist relatively peacefully, so you shouldn't have that many issuses.
GRUB should automatically detect the other OS and take care of things for you. Unless you have a weird EFI config, you shouldn't have to touch that, either.

I've done this before, it's just that I have no effin clue how efi works and after installing studio, i get no grub menu and it just goes into my gnome install
This machine is dope though.

hm. You might need to hold down SHIFT during boot to get the GRUB menu to show up.

brb. let me give that a go
nope, that didn't do it.

7:04 AM
that was fast.

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

is there a magenta screen during boot?

Well I have ubuntu gnome running so the screen is blue-ish

7:07 AM
huh. Add a # before the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 line.
Then, run sudo update-grub, and reboot.
(you will need root to edit the file, so sudo nano or gksu gedit or whatever your preferred root text editor is)

I have never manually updated grub before. I'm skurred
heh

basically you're just disabling the hidden parameters.
(or just the timeout one, the quiet parameter won't do anything without the first)

I feel funny asking this, but where do I find the grub file that I need to edit? I have been using linux for ages and I have never had to go in and edit grub

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
also, you're lucky :D
at least you're not editing Xorg.conf

I did it in gedit and saved it
I will update grub in the terminal and reboot the computer

It's probably not a big deal, but what's the output of sudo lsblk?

7:17 AM
Eh, that looks ok/normal.
Linux likes naming drives in a weird fashion at times, but that looks just fine to me.

Why is the efi partition so big? It's like 10% of my drive.

Wow...
That's impressive, lol.
Um, you did manual partitioning or was that automatic when you first put Ubuntu on?

I put ubuntu gnome on using the regular installer on a fresh ssd.

hm. it's strange that it would make a 50 gb EFI partition.

I don't understand EFI at all, so I figured whatever it did must be right.
it's not a huge deal. I wipe out my carry around once every 6 to 9 months any way. I will figure out what that's all about between now and then

7:21 AM
Your standard EFI partition is ~100 MB.
If you're crazy or do a lot of weird things, you might have one a bit larger, but anything over 4GB is just weird.
This is why manual partitioning is king.

the desktop and the laptop that this thing is replacing combined had less storage than I have in this thing, so losing 50 gigs isn't gonna bother me. I am so used to dumping my audio and video projects to my nas as soon as I am done working on them, this isn't a problem.

If it becomes an issue and you want to reclaim that space, you can just shrink the EFI partition without any worry. Move the Ubuntu partition to the left, and expand it a bit. Should work fine.

My entire SSD is 32gb

Or you can add in a 45GB partition for shared file storage or similar, if you want. You can really do a lot with that space.
(Actually if you want to try something fun, you can symlink your user directories between the two OSes together and keep your ~/Music, ~/Documents, and the like in sync.)

Yeah, it's not a big deal. I've been on SSDs since 120 was expensive so I can survive on 450gb combined for now

7:25 AM
As for (U)EFI, it's really just a replacement to the boot sector, with the difference being that EFI boots from files directly.

I thought about that, but I just wanna get back to work on my projects honestly, Plus if I really need to get files on one from the other, I can just launch the file manager as root

So instead of messing with a boot sector, EFI boot instructions are essentially stored in files, within your EFI partition (mounted at /boot/efi).

gotta switch trains.

Actually, if you have the same UID (if you're the only user, this'll be the case), you won't even need root.
You'll already have permissions on the other drive.
All you need to deal with is the mounting, but you can add an entry to /etc/fstab to do that.

7:54 AM
