12:00 AM
well goodnight folks, im off now

@Videonauth Yeah i had to learn it the hard way about how power sudo is .... The embarrassing part is that although i am quite new to linux, but i am a web dev and had some important clients websites working files that would be hard to recover only from server public versions of them (jekyll...).
Also from now on I am having my working files and most important files backed up at dropbox, gdrive, my host server, maybe in an external SSD.. Also... if i would have used a virtual box and not a dual booting - would that have prevented me this headache ?

@Mkey not really, lesson learned, take a live cd and backup your files, they should be in the destination folder of your mv command or if you stopped the process on the disk, just booting will probably dont work
just do backups from now on and you're safe

Will do :) And yet the question is - should it would be better to use virtual box next time than dual booting? If we don't take into account the time spent to switch between OS and a bit more PC resources in dual booting than VM.

@Mkey how much of a performance hit do you want
VirtualBox-ing means you have to split resources across two OSes simultaneously.
dual boot means one OS gets all the resources as long as it's on.

as i researched the performance diff is not that big. But i just had an accident with my both dual OS after executing "sudo mv /* ../" and i wonder if that command would have been executed in VM would my windows os have not been harmed ??

12:27 AM
probably, but your VM and Windows would not have touched

Maybe anyone could predict where are the files that used to be in home/user/~ directory along with download, desktop etc. folders . Those are the folders I want to recover that have been lost after "sudo mv /* ../"
Using ParagonExtFS for Windows for exploring ubuntu partition and started to use Ease US data recovery , but can't seem to locate the files that were in that specific directory?? for e.g. files in var/www/html/ direct looks to be unharmed.... Maybe it's because these folders had diff permission that saved them???

1:02 AM
Think of one file in /home/user/ that you remember and then search for it starting in / (root) directory using recursive option.

1:22 AM
new user posting exactly same answer 3 times directly in a row askubuntu.com/users/635170/garakchy

/facepalm
maybe chown devs need to implement a warning just like rm -rf / shows

might be useful, but would probably break some compatibility

Along the lines: "Please spare yourself and people who try to troubleshoot the stupidity you're about to commit"

"Stupidity is no excuse!"

1:33 AM
anyway, good night folks...

Sleep well, my wolfy brotha from anotha motha

how poetic.

Speaking of which, I used to write poetry when I first came to the US.

good poetry or bad poetry

Depressing teenage poetry
( still better than a Wrecking Ball probably )

1:42 AM
Wrecking ball <b>lyrics</b> are good.

@Mkey use two stars at the end and front to make a word bold, like this

I'm a bad poet, but at least I now it.

( insert the "The more you know" tune here )

the more i know - ok
maybe u guys have some experience in recovering files from ubuntu partition?

ByteCommander , who just went to sleep, has some experience with that. I personally have no experience with data recovery

1:49 AM
@arda you should get a fake US address and get T-Mobile. They have free coverage in Turkey :p

29 million lines takes a while to cat . . .

2:00 AM
Meow

:)

@Seth halp
I'm addicted to Owl City music!
To be honest though, I think this guy writes his songs by getting high

2:16 AM
It's 7 PM , but I'm tempted to go for another cup of coffee

7 PM doesn't sound late
Anyway do you know an active linux/unix/ubuntu channel ?

What's wrong with this one? ;p

We're never on topic

There's a topic?
@Mkey Unless you're meaning "I need a place where I can go in and ask a quick question without people looking at me funny"

@JourneymanGeek nope

2:21 AM
But the discouragement of said quick questions is what appeals to me here. I discuss things. Else we'd end up like IRC with people constantly popping in and demanding help.

@JourneymanGeek If you would look a bit of this chats history - then you would see that it's the opposite of quick questions.

@Mkey #ubuntu on freenode.

@Mkey which is usually good.

@Mkey we're not really for asking questions, although it never hurts.

and I do knida count as a regular here ;p

2:24 AM
what Seth said.

pretty sure we are here mostly to share memes

Chat is for chatting. We are able to answer some thing but this room at least is for general conversation
Answer within our areas of expertize that is
@edwinksl do you have anymore of them memes to share ?

tons but i moderate myself
we could have a room for strictly on-topic questions and another room that is just for hanging out but i doubt this is what people want

This is the general room though... I'm sure people can create specific ones if they wanted to right?

Isnt what discord is for ?
holly balls, my cat command is still going. it's been what, 20 mins already ?

2:30 AM
it is not particularly active
also i am sure many people have issues (technical or otherwise) with discord

Slack ?
Also, what possible issues ? Discord works in browser. Slack does too

Dunno

the close-sourceness of discord turns off some people (although SE chat is also closed, lol)

bubble standards

there is also inertia in getting people to use Yet Another Chat Program

2:37 AM
Whoa why is Discord closed source?

Well, yet another chat program sometimes can be a bit more censorship-free, plus more open-topic-ish
Maybe it was a mistake to cat all 29 million lines

@Serg why are you cating 29 million lines

@edwinksl so I made a tail implementation in python yesterday, which works nicely, but for some reason it outputs an extra line if text file doesn't end in newline, which happens to be my BIGFILE.txt which I use for testing. Well, I just got currious what cat -A will show . . . so i ran that . . .really no good reason
Curiosity : making things happen since the beginning of the world
i made that file by simply appending dmesg in a loop for a while

and until the end.

That too ^

2:47 AM
Cause the world will end, not with a whimper or a bang but with a "hm, that's strange. Its not supposed to do that"

Well if some theoretical physicists are correct , the world is supposed to end in a giant collapse of the universe where all matter contracts back into the origin of big bang
But then again its just a theory
In the mean time, im gonna go back to watching Hyuna
Im back to my Kpop addiction
Well, that's interesting. cat -A says my file ends with $
which can't be

3:10 AM
dammit no english subtitles on the video . . .

@Serg A SCIENCE THEORY
ok, I'll go now.

@Seth i see what you did there. Have a star
i've earned 925 hat on AU, which i don't know how i got it. Is that another secret hat ?

hat for silver badge

O_o i got a silver badge without realizing and any notification ?

hmm. what HTTP status code should i use for "no web site, and this is not a webserver"

3:18 AM
oh, i got enlightened badge. that one looks silver

it would be a 4xx
but what kind of 4xx
also...
In computer networking, HTTP 451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons is an error status code of the HTTP protocol to be displayed when the user requests a resource which cannot be served for legal reasons, such as a web page censored by a government. The number 451 is a reference to Ray Bradbury's 1953 dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, in which books are outlawed. 451 could be described as a more explanatory variant of 403 Forbidden. This status code is standardized in RFC 7725. Examples of situations where an HTTP 451 error code could be displayed include web pages deemed a danger to national security...

Odd thing is that I got the badge like 5 hours ago, and the hat came in just now O_o

@Serg hats have a lot of lag

time to farm hats

3:21 AM
5 hours isn't a lot, it's too much
375/400 for scripts badge . . . 25 to go . . . If that's like 2 answers per day, with 1 vote, that's like 12 and days

3:36 AM
huh, it says I got the hat "search you must", but I never got a notification for it.

I've been using AU's search for days, and haven't gotten any hat

@Serg UTC days?

@Seth yep. I am pretty much 24/7 on AU except when i sleep, and use search all the time

now I got the notification

gud evenin

3:53 AM
Ohai, Ian. Seems like it's been a while since you've signed on

yeah, I didn't log in yesterday, kind of lost my day recovering the sleep from the dawn shifts :p @Serg

I see. Any new Ruby or C adventures ?

been playing around with C, but haven't touched Ruby since the Asteroids minigame
I need to figure out something people would use for my next project, my repo hasn't had much traffic since I got it up haha

I've made simple tail implementation in Python, maybe you'd be interested in that as exercise. Was an interesting little challenge. I kind of want to post it on code review site , but wanna polish it a little more

did you implement all GNU tails options?

4:03 AM
Nope, only printing last x number of lines so far. There's plenty of room for improvement and options that i can stuff there

I think I could try to do that on Ruby to practice too
just started reading about multiwindow editing on vim @Serg

Nice. I use only buffers so far. I'll need to review how to split windows in vim
By the way, permatently added "set expandtab" and "set shiftwidth=4" , although sometimes i still automatically try to use 's/^/bunch of spaces here/'

I'm still in the middle of the chapter, but so far it seems like :split and :new work for splitting horizontally and :vsplit and :vnew vertically (the latter splits with an empty buffer and the former with the buffer from the current window or the filename given)
the commands for moving through windows start with ^W and are usually intuitive, for example:
^W + hjkl (moves through the windows in the direction of the key)
@Serg I like hardtabs, but I'm honestly thinking about using softtabs on vim, because when the indentation level is increasing it's getting a bit hard to read the code

4:21 AM
Hmm, interesting. So it seems it kinda works like splitting in screen

maybe 4 spaces would be good enough, or I think I'll actually just use tabstop=4
@Serg yeah, it reminds screen

4:56 AM
@Zacharee1 haha thanks for the offer but I pay 30usd for 12gb, 2000 ww minutes, unlimited talk with turkey, 2000 sms.

@arda that's amazing
where is this?

vodafone turkey

Ah. Pretty nice.

5:27 AM
Clockwork secret hat !

@edwinksl image not found ?

hmm i can see it though

I can't on my screen, and it comes over from slack, so . . . I guess you have to be signed in to see it. Try screenshoting it or downloading and posting via chat's upload button

ayy

ayy,lmao ?

7:44 AM
nothing important anyway, whatever

@edwinksl 403

I am so conflicted right now: i wanna sleep, and i want a sandwitch, and there's a few youtube videos i want

you can't hotlink to things uploaded to a slack group.
@Serg make a sandwich, watch youtube until you fall asleep.
AKA my "every night"

sort of my every night too, except i probably should have had that sandwich earlier

... i should get a sword.
mostly just because i can.

7:56 AM
Swords are cool. But impractical. But cool. Especially katanas

still cool.
and if you know how to use them... Instant +20 to badass score.

Speaking of katanas . . . I've watched a video a few days ago. There's a guy - a kendo practitioner or something like that - who cut a bullet out of the air
Like not some legend or stuff, it's actually captured on camera and such

i want to say extreme amounts of luck.
also, TIL you can cut a slug of metal coming at you at 800 MPH in two.
i mean, deflect works, but I'm not sure you can actually slice it.

To some extend luck, but I'd say it's skills. There's some people who develop their senses to supernatural levels
OK . . . what did i wanna do ?
sammich

given 100 feet, a person can't really move a sword into the perfect position in just 0.08 seconds.
so unless he can see the bullet fire within those 0.08 second and move the sword to the proper place, he's gonna miss it, as 1200fps is faster than sound.
just saying, it's hard to react that fast.

70 feet, let's be generous and give him 200 mph.
that gives him 0.23 seconds to react.
as that's a lot slower than sound, he has time enough to react, and given that he can (possibly) get an idea of trajectory by sight, it's possible.
excruciatingly hard, and I'd say luck was on his side, conditions were favorable (no wind, etc)

still, that's some reaction time. Most people can't react this fast

hell, i'd probably take a full half second.

@KazWolfe longer probably even, check out how reaction times measure into braking ways of cars

though there is a pretty big difference between conscious reaction and subconscious (reflex, flight/fight)...

8:15 AM
indeed

hence why large noises make you flinch/whatever immediately, and you have more process time before you get an idea of what's going on.
consciousness adds a lot of lag.

this is why it is calle reflex, and not re-action

8:40 AM
this is not a waste of resources in the slightest.

@KazWolfe well hello
Now combine that with fortune command

What is a system with fortune without fortunes-off installed?

thats probably my system because i only have fortune package installed
And on that glorious note , i think i'm gonna sleep
so buh bye guys

9:11 AM
sighs well i should better not read the news

1 hour later…

Hello everybody ! Good morning ! :)

morning @cl-netbox how are you?

@Zanna Good morning Zanna ! :) I'm fine ... what about yourself ? Everything good ? Did you have nice Xmas days ? :)

Thank you for reviewing 20 close votes today; come back in 13 hours to continue reviewing.

Good morning @Videonauth ! :)

@cl-netbox good morning to you too

@Videonauth someone else better CV something so I can get that notification haha

lol

@cl-netbox I'm fine thanks very much :) yes very nice chilled out days with family

youre today the only one putting close votes up :p

11:00 AM
yep... found another load of stuff to clean up

@Zanna Nice ! :)

:)
I think this should be duped, as self answer just says "this question solved my problem" and I can't really upvote that askubuntu.com/questions/471104/…

@Zanna if you post links to the questions you close vote i could give votes on them outside of the que

@Videonauth <3

:) done

11:09 AM
Hello everyone :D

to repeat my earlier message more specifically... can this be duped, answered by someone who knows, or closed as a bug (if it is a feature request) askubuntu.com/questions/233694/…
@Videonauth thanks :D
@Hizqeel hi there! how are you?

@Zanna This one i have hit earlier

Hi @Hizqeel ! :)

@Zanna I am good.. What about you? :)

excellent thanks :)

11:11 AM
@cl-netbox :)

and now I'll stop making noise in this room :)

@Videonauth h1b visas tend to get abused a lot tho

yeah i don't know about the different visas, I'm just reading news and found this very interesting

@Videonauth the usual reading material is help.ubuntu.com/community/FilePermissionsACLs, just skip the "enabling" part (ACLs are enabled by default on current Ubuntu systems)

@muru O.k. thank you, will read into that and edit my answer according

1 hour later…
2:05 PM
apparently you guys like my answer xD
+110 quickly, never expected that :P

2:17 PM
yeah

I got a secret hat, The "Like Clockwork" one.

I got that one too, NO IDEA how I got it xD
SECRET HATS ARE SECRET

Yeah, same.
Just appeared here.

I could tell you guys but tha'll cos you at lest 290 reputation on my secret rep account at AskUbuntu island
:p

anyways, back to work for me, i needed the five minute diversion :)

2:37 PM
@Videonauth nice answer with the ACLs part, the only problem would be if the user is letting them use their own user account, which is bad either way

yeah as you stated physical access is evilkenevil
280 reputation to go till i hit the next big achievement

IT Security 101: If anyone has physical access to the box, your system is completely screwed.

yep, if someone on my machine would delete files, i would simply delete their hands ....

I'd probably erase their lifeforce, but okay :)
ooo my mother packed me leftovers for lunch... nice.

Amped up hat link for Zanna ;) → askubuntu.com/q/837558/527764

2:43 PM
1/5
@ThomasWard have to say i never expected this question to gain that much traction
sadly most people wont read beyond your answer

@ThomasWard In Ye Olde Hat Shoppe it says that hat is awarded for voting daily.

yes consecutive daily votes and activity

3:08 PM
@ByteCommander cool
@Videonauth Probably true, but given that user isolation is a good thing :P
@Videonauth I think that'd have more to do with the IT Security background than the mod diamond though :p

maybe
who knows

in other news, I discovered SystemD does not play nice with VPN DNS servers
and I had to shut off systemd's resolvers
and go back to GOOD OLD DNSMASQ+NetworkManager
and my local DNS server on my laptop, of course :)

I still wonder how to get a foot in secop bussiness

@Videonauth first start by fixing other peoples broken code and getting paid for it... Then after five years start developing your own and selling it to your past customers.

@ThomasWard #33c3 live streams streaming.media.ccc.de/33c3

3:18 PM
?

live streams from the 33th ccc conference

ah.
can't view at work :P

3:36 PM
what about it

@ThomasWard moducate em

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Huh? What??? It's not because I'm ex-military that I'm a white helmet! /P

Hey @Fabby ... good afternoon ! :)

:) Killing time before the meeting starts!

3:41 PM
Hey @Fabby don't recall thinking white helmets frequented this chat room, you especially :)

So what were you going on about???

@Fabby Meeting ? I thought you are having two weeks off ? :D

Yes: all my projects are on hold, except this one

guys do CVs

45 minutes / week of work.

3:43 PM
Zach my vote limit is reached.

y tho

@Zacharee1 already told em off, refresh yer page

Closed aready zach

they're on my radar though

@Fabby it was a really late response
@ThomasWard I saw

3:44 PM
yay for Smokey pings xD

@Fabby PLEASE post on this Nvidia bounty I created. There are only two bad answers and even if you posted "It's spelled nVidia, not Nvidia" I'll give you the bounty.

:D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well it was nVidia at one point I think

I'll have a look
(I am traveling and didn't bring my Ubuntu Laptop though)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well, actually they write themselves NVIDIA ! :) Will you award the bounty to that answer too, even if it is not from @Fabby ? :D :D :D Hi @WinEunuuchs2Unix ! :)

3:52 PM
:D it still is nVidia, but in all caps that is NVIDIA. :P

@cl-netbox I had to create a bounty to get a badge and when I picked that question I remember Fabby was resident nVidia expert but anyone can answer as bounty ends in 1 day. I really don't care what the the answer is, just something better than the two 20 word answers already posted :)

@Fabby Really ? What do we see here -> nvidia.com ? :D :D :D

:P

@cl-netbox the N is technically lower case
so nVIDIA

VENI VIDI NVIDIA?
2

3:56 PM
yes

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Done!
(let's hope it helps him/her/it)

@Fabby You're awesome! Happy 60 point day :)

:P
Thanks!

Now I should post a new question "How do I spell nVidia" and you can all answer ! :p

@Fabby upvoted ! so minimum 70 ! :)

3:59 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix OT

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Better not ... hahaha

:D :D :D
meeting start imminent.
