Easy rep for Bash experts, proof-read my function please: askubuntu.com/q/830218/367990

I know nothing, but what's that backtick?

It's the original command's left quotation mark in the type output.
$ type nano
nano is aliased to `nano -AESWmi -T4'

@Seth scraper is almost working ---^
The first message is a false positive, though :(

8:35 AM
I know nothing, really, but maybe you want sed -E 's/^.*(.*).*$/\1/' ` it seems to work, but if I test on some other thing, there are some chars getting eaten as it is?

That can't really work.
There are no delimiters where the captured group starts and ends?

I thought you want everything after `
but idk

Everything in between ` and '

ah!
obvs

But I didn't manage to escape ' correctly so that Bash doesn't take it as quote, and I know it must be the last character in the line, so I simply used .$

8:39 AM
makes sense! that is smart

not smart, just cheating...
which on the other hand is also smart again...

there is a really crazy looking post somewhere about escaping some quotes...

Well, no matter how many backslashes I threw at the single quote, it had no effect...

I know how you feel, for some reason I couldn't fathom, I ended up doing something similar when trying to escape two double quotes together

fathom... learned a new word ^_^

8:50 AM
lol :)

@ByteCommander when asking for help improving your code, you should explain what the code does, and what you need it to do.

@terdon I did that, didn't I?

What is the sed command doing? I can figure it out, but it would be better if you explained it.

But I'm currently considering to convert my question here on AU into a self-answered Q&A "How can I run user aliases with sudo", because I just crossposted it on codereview...
Or shouldn't I?

Oh. Well, I'd consider it on topic here, why not? it would be even better on U&L but it's also on topic here.

9:02 AM
Just saw that its score went up to 3, would such a substantial edit still be acceptable?

That's a nice function by the way, useful idea.
@ByteCommander Substantial edit?
Ah.

But I'm currently considering to convert my question here on AU into a self-answered Q&A "How can I run user aliases with sudo", because I just crossposted it on codereview...

Um.
shrugs

haha you can keep my upvote anyways

Up to you. There are no answers yet, so. . .

9:03 AM
ok

By the way, @ByteCommander, your function doesn't actually run sudo commands for the non-aliased ones
The sudo isn't in $@:
$ function foo(){ echo $@; }
$ foo bar
bar
You want /sbin/sudo "$@"

Yay! WolfBot's detection is working!

@terdon Oh, right! But isn't it /usr/bin/sudo?

And really well, too. Still some FPs, but it is better

@ByteCommander Is it? It's in /sbin on Arch and used to be in /sbin everywhere AFAIK
You could also just run \sudo "$@" to get the system one instead of your function

9:11 AM
it's definitely /usr/bin/sudo here

$ type sudo
sudo is /usr/bin/sudo

Ah, yeah, /sbin has become a link to /usr/bin on many systems. Including mine, actually
$ type sudo
sudo is /sbin/sudo
$ ls -ld /sbin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Sep 30  2015 /sbin -> usr/bin

Q: error permission denied (publickey , keyboard-interactive) through ssh (scp) between linux

Waqas Ranai am connected from bastion(server-name) to another server (ecash) through ssh via key pair. i have to copy file htdocs from ecash server to bastion server. i am running command scp source_user@source_remote_host:/usr/bin/mysql_backup.sh \ target_user@target_remote_host:/var/tmp/ ...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L Seriously? Not even a single correct tag!?

hahaha

9:13 AM
I can use command sudo.

@ByteCommander Same thing, yes. I prefer \sudo since it's shorter. I think I have an answer about this somewhere.
44
A: How can I run original command that aliased with same name?

terdonYou can bypass aliases by the following methods: the full pathname of the command: /bin/ls command substitution: $(which ls) the command builtin: command ls double quotation marks: "ls" single quotation marks: 'ls' a backslash character: \ls

Oh, heemayl gold-dupe-closed my question... askubuntu.com/q/830218/367990

Oh wow, I'd completely forgotten the space trick. That's much cleaner than using a function.
It's correctly closed, it is a dupe. And the dupe has a better solution :)

@Zanna woah python answer. bringing out the big guns i see

haha that answer is so simple
thanks for the upgoat
oh that post has a lot of answers now

@ByteCommander and a +1 from me too. I also quoted the "$@" which is needed, for example, if your command has a space in its path. Have a look at the answers here: unix.stackexchange.com/q/251103/22222

I saw your edit, thanks. :)
@terdon You want to comment that on codereview as well? Or shall I just edit it in there?

Hmm. Gimme a sec, I'll post an answer. I've never posted on code review before.

sure, take your time
As I won't use my function any more anyway, now that I know about alias sudo='sudo ', there is no need to hurry :)

9:53 AM
OK, answer posted. I found some more issues that need fixing. In all, I really don't think that function is a good idea after all.
I'm pretty sure my improved version can also break on some complex cases.

huh, interesting

I just tested it in a virgin firefox profile without any addons or customizations.

well error error error :P

@terdon try side-by-side instead of side-by-side markdown

@terdon side-by-side, not side-by-side markdown
I just tested it in Chromium with a temp profile, looks the same.

Yeah, yeah, noticed. See previous comment

mine was FF49

and mine was wrong. Again. Sorry @edwinksl and @ByteCommander, you're quite right, it's also broken for me in side-by-side. Works fine in inline

11:07 AM
@ByteCommander OK, I voted to close. It really isn't a very urgent bug.
But here, have an upvote as well before the meta.se posse falls on you.

Thanks. They stab me often enough ;)
Let's see what happens to this 2 years old bug...
Should be fixable within less than 5 minutes actually.

It really isn't very useful to post the same bug report again though. It just clutters the site and makes it harder for the devs to track existing bugs. I don't understand why you chose to post it knowing it was a dupe.

If a bug report is two years old and got that low attention, it is likely to be forgotten, I think.
Not sure if that extra poke will help, but at least I tried.

Upvote it, bounty it. Post a new answer on the old bug report. All of these would bring it back to the front page.

bountying a bug report...
seems useless to me as the only ones who would deserve the bounty are those who fix the bug, which are the devs who have no real use for the points anyway.

11:15 AM
tbh using the SE format to do bug reports seems odd to me

Sure it raises attention, but... still wasting points.
And I couldn't state that I have too many points over on MSE.

@ByteCommander depends how conscientious a student you are...

Let's see how that works out at the university.
Probably not so well, I fear.
