6:00 AM
well you get a +2 out of it

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice it gets easier. ;p
(or you just close it as unclear what you're asking)

I've edited 204 posts, over 1/3 of my rep is +2 +2 +2 +2 XD

no shame in that

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice editing is hard work. +2 is almost too little for a good edit

AGREED @edwinksl

@edwinksl its enough to be something, but not enough that its worth gaming the system for.
There's some folk who do super trivial edits

yeah, you get mean reviewers like me who just remove them :D

@JourneymanGeek presumably they will figure it wouldn't work if their edits get rejected

@edwinksl there's also people who game the system by robo-reviewing.

When you need 2K rep to see review queues ;;;;----;;;;

6:07 AM
2k isn't hard to get
fun fact, David. You're almost beating me for edits

@JourneymanGeek what is gained by doing that? badges?

yup
I mean, at some point, they're trivial, and you get a few hundred of em

Hold up, in titles, do we follow: all words except (the, and, etc.) are captialized or just proper nouns and the first word?

Whichever the editor likes

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice i don't think there is a rule for this on this site

6:09 AM
aight cool

when in doubt, do what you think is right
if it's not right, someone will yell at you and reverse your changes

@ my dad XD
omg okay so I remember my first time on this site
I was really nooby

lol

I was like looking for help with installation and I ended up deleting the post
I wish I hadnt
It might be on my Dad's account
I really want to find it XD

those dumb ubuntu forums turned out nasty for me. Ended up requesting that the topic be closed
what you were saying reminds me of that. Anyways thats just how so many forums are. not nice to noobs
:(

Q: Best AMD settings for Minecraft?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceSo I play minecraft, and recently got my new AMD graphics card. I got the drivers installed but there are white lines all over the minecraft screen. I have screenshots of the AMD settings, and I'd love to know what to change to get the best quality out of my gaming. Here are the settings

my earliest question
still hasnt been answered >:C
noob David ^v^

so now I know I'm not the only one that uses >:C thingy LOL
haha

is that "minetest" program anything like minecraft? tried it and wasnt impressed
on AppGrid

its okay
IM DEAD

Q: i need to know how correctly limit connections per ip?

Vlark.Lopini asked many questions about the same subject here the answer said i should add rule like this iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT then start adding the rest of rules # Dynamic Badguy List. Detect and DROP Bad IPs that try to access port 20000. # Once...

what are the differences between that and minecraft

6:21 AM
I didnt try it myself
a friend did
I saw them play, it seemed the same pretty much

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice opinion-based. what may be "best" for you might not be "best" for me

your very first question

Ohh, well okay assuming you like visually appealing gaming which most do ;)

but i may not care about visuals, instead preferring 60 fps (hint, i do)

6:30 AM
I run 2500 fps :P
What's overkill?

in Minecraft? On what card?
Also is this active or just staying still looking at a cloudless sky?

Not even about the card, its more the processor
and active

...
i don't think i can hit 500 with a 4790k and two-way 1080 SLI

I got a sponsor from someone I know, Ive got the 6950X Extreme.

why the hell do you need a $1700 processor

6:34 AM
Why not?
I work as a programmer on the side
I can game and have tests running at the same time

so do i, and i'm on a 4500U with no problems doing the same thing.

I have tests running connections to Cern

watching the hydraulic press channel is satisfying

I... your processor is completely overkill and unnecessary for 100% of non-research and server related tasks.

Believe me I've gone to 100% processor usage on this thing. I have 10-20 resource intensive tasks running at once with constant downloads and uploads from cross ocean, It may be a BIT overkill, but I have found use

6:37 AM
There's no way you're legitimately using 100% processor power and staying efficient with your processing capacity.

No, mind you it was when I had no overclocking going, but still
on an average day I reach 75%

either your system is using excess processor power for no reason or your average beats the average Google server.

Not no reason, streaming takes alot of processing power

again, i stream just fine on a 4500U, barely capping over 67% on a single core.
10 cores/20 threads is insane. You're paying for double the performance of a 4790k at approx 5 times the price

Again, the 10-20 programs I run, are being streamed back and forth between Geneva Switzerland, so average streaming isn't what Im talking about

6:41 AM
why on earth are you streaming cern data
i assume you're not an active researcher on the project

My Dad works there, he got me an internship
I assist him
so kind of, yes

at... CERN. And they offload computing onto you?

No, the branch my dad works for offloads to him, and half of what is offloaded to him goes to me

because i'm pretty sure at the scale of data they're doing, parallel computing would be much cheaper, faster, and efficient.
if you're being offloaded enough data to fill that CPU up to 75%, it would just make sense for CERN to invest in a cluster in place of offloading work onto employee machines.

Remember it isnt just that data
Right now I have 3 different games open, 5 browser tabs
and whatever else runs in the background

6:46 AM
every window has a little X button in the corner

if you click that you won't have so many things open
like three games

Also idk if you'd be interested, but I went once, I have some pictures :P

Only one really cool one
This was when my dad first asked for my help :P

6:53 AM
Point him to SETI@Home
He can offload computing power to the entire world and they'll do it for whatever reason.

This is private data, not some public computing power needed

*shrug*
then get him to build a cluster
it's a weekend project and frees your CPU to play eight instances of Witcher 3 at the same time, while livestreaming them all.

Lol
It gives me something to do in my spare time
I also Fold

well then. hmu if you want a cluster up within 48 hours.

6:55 AM
i think i still have a spare few boxes that are sitting unused. yay basement racks!

seriously. a full server rack in your basement is fun.
(as is rewiring your entire house to use cat 6)

Good Company(TM)

I would totally do this if I had my own place. though I'd not have a basement.

pfsense master race

6:58 AM
But is your Internet connection fast enough?

"I'm not (being) racist but" is what people say when they're about to say something racist, pretty much without fail. Please don't say [some ethnic group] [some negative thing]

though if you really want a fun summer project, set up a full corporate-grade network in your home.
- VLAN for home devices
- VLAN for IoT
- VLAN for servers/resources
- VLAN for guests

Thank you.

use actual wireless APs for wifi access, and tag them appropriately.

@Zanna

Bring up a PBX server and wire cisco IP phones throughout the house. Add a gate/door intercom.
Secure your main network with 802.1X and WPA2-Enterprise, using certificates (of course).
Give guests (relative) free range, but limit their traffic to sane limits, and tunnel them through a captive portal that keeps track of connection time and data use..
Set up an LDAP server and NAS so that anybody can log in to any computer and have their desktop and files accessible right there.

Kaz have you been able to find a way to fold on multiple clients at once?

And if you really want some fun, get a TFTP server running so you can deploy images to client computers to deliver updates and new software.
I honestly have not looked into it.
and yes, all of this can be done in a month given the right resources.
then you do the server side. Set up ansible and a hypervisor to run all of the services and ensure redundancy.
You should be able to pull the plug on any server and lose nothing important at all.

I setup one of my school's severs to fold over the summer
may or may not have told them
oops ;)

Your IT admin hates you already.

7:05 AM
Lol yea

@Zanna sadly when I say it, its often of people of my own country of origin.

I had to deal with a clever kid setting up a bitcoin mining ring.

idiots don't think I know how to IT.

7:06 AM
Let's just say they needed admin permissions to open Chrome from that moment on.

My middle school IT hated my guts, I set up server to host my Minecraft multiplayer for the whole school. We had like 500 people on XD

If he hated you and was competent, your server would be instantly dead in the water

They gave us remote control of all servers 1-20 accidentally
I took advantage

That is how you get suspended.

changed routing options 1-10
they couldnt trace me XD

7:08 AM
Oh?

That was the best part
I used a VPN that when traced led back to a public IP somewhere in Canada

Sometimes I wonder how long you've been playing the game.
Your IT staff let public access to control servers.

That is beyond stupid to the point of unbelievable.

Not on purpose
But like

7:09 AM
Most systems are built to not let that happen unless you explicitly tell it to do that.

Mhm, thats the thing

@JourneymanGeek I could go deep into the topic, but maybe not such a good idea since unfortunately the white man dictionary gives us a poor quality definition of racism and I don't wanna get eaten before I've got to the end of 101

He was trying to setup new permissions, and needed to have control of all of us, so he let down the gates for like 2 mins

(I'm currently dealing with a company that's pushed back my start date by 2 weeks on short notice, and they're from the old country)

I took advantage

7:10 AM
Even the worst designed systems I met had isolation to not allow it to be controlled publicly.
You pulled off an exploit... in 2 minutes.

That allowed you to gain semi-permanent control of a server.

yepperoonis
Well

Pardon my inability to believe this.

me and 3 friends
We had setup scripts to attempt
all we had to do was wait for a moment it fell
and BLAM

7:11 AM
You... knew this was a pre-planned event. And you wrote scripts against the exact deployment to run this?

@Zanna quite. I'm pretty sure people of other cultures go into IT for all the wrong reasons... ;p

We didn't know when it would happen, but that it would eventually, and yes, we developed a script that would exploit the system far faster than any human could

Again. I really have trouble believing this, and that ITS could screw up that badly.

This guy was like mid 20s
confident nerd

@JourneymanGeek hehehe

7:13 AM
just out of college

I'm also mid 20s, and everything is on separate isolated VLANs.

You use Ubuntu
;)

The student VLAN at my last gig had zero chance of touching the staff VLAN

This guy was like all talk and no do

So... what trick did your scripts exploit? How did you jump into the servers and keep control of them after the network was re-isolated?

7:14 AM
It took 4 days to block, lets say... "adult" sites
Well we were using Windows notebooks, and there was a ping every so often or so from the servers that we used back to the computers and all the computers would ping at the same time so we scrambled the connection IPs between some computers to gain admin access, then granted the original connection admin access. That was my part of the code, after that, not sure what happened. As I said, my friends and I worked on this, in sections rather than together.

You re-assigned IPs with known admin access to your machines?
Or did you just spoof and fake your IP when sending the ping packets
Because this seems to be one of those "l33t h4x0r k3d" stories you read on 4chan that is technically impossible or requires a lot of specialized experience to pull off.

We spoofed the IPs, for example ping would come from (0 - Us) as (1 - Admin) and the ping from (1 - Admin) would come as (0 - Us) so no suspicious activity was raised, since 1 ping was coming from each IP address

@Zanna I'm indian tho, and we have a ton of bad programmers ;p

That's not because they are Indian though is it? :)
it's because of [list of geopolitical and socioeconomic factors]

@Zanna It's probably because they weren't given the proper training

7:21 AM
I hope not
Well that
and people want to go into IT cause its a respectable profession.

Okay then I know that you're faking, @DavidCole-GrammarPolice. You can't spoof IPs because of TCP.

I work IT cause I actually am almost good with computers

Even if you were forwarding and replaying pings, that's still no reason devices would give you admin access to them due to security protocols.
No system (no matter admin sanity) would rely on IP addresses as a form of auth.
Secondly, a school of ove r500+ students can not fit in a single /24, thereby ensuring that VLANs and subnets are used. Unless your network admin was certifiably insane, there is no reason they wouldn't have separated critial resources from the student network.

The pings were what would determine the access given, and yes, believe it or not, our admin was that stupid. He relied on IP addresses to determine permissions, call me out, but I'm recalling what happened.

I'm 100% confident that he did not write his own software with such a glaring loophole.
Any script kiddie with wireshark would have been able to defeat and gain complete access into everything, regardless of a firewall being up or down.
Either way, I need to go deal with annoying system crashes on servers at 12:30 AM, so goodnight.
yay on-call sysadmin positions

7:26 AM
Goodnight.
Im gonna go too peeps, 3:30 AM and bed is calling :P
peace

peace :)

and so many spammers from india :(

oh but it's about upgrading so no

8:40 AM
morning

is it still morning for you?

if anyone has enough time, take a look at this guy's questions
no. it is 2:41 PM here

then thank you for your greeting, and good afternoon to you :)

I said morning, because it's the first time in chat for this day
thanks :)

take a look because the questions are good and need answering?

8:43 AM
no. all his questions are on TTYs and ...
looks like he isn't reading the answers

hahaha

Thinking on VIM, i found that vim-gtk has that option of saving with sudo.
you can answer with it
He even made part of @KazWolfe's answer on one of this question a comment on one of my answer to another of his question :)
I deleted the answer then with annoyance!

grrr!
idk, probably I shouldn't have made than vim comment, since they want to click a button on a menu... I should save it for another question maybe?

that too is ok.

9:28 AM
@Zacharee1 here's my question about GIMPshop opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/4399/…

9:45 AM
don't know. The other question i answered seems related.
but it seems OP here wants to have consistent behavior for roots
the other one was opposite

meh, I answered it

@SmokeDetector What is essay writing?

@jokerdino hi .. and why?

What is Exoslim?

@Anwar hi

9:52 AM
@Zanna a spelling error - should read exoslime ;P
Hi all

hehe

hi @Takkat :)

Hi :)

@Seth probably should have been filed against Unity project.
@Takkat didn't want to expose you were around :)

@jokerdino am I?
I am always and ever around, I guess.

9:54 AM
Guess so too.

gosh 2148 consecutives already...

wow that's impressive

35 only

I break mine every 10 days or so.

sometimes I am not sure whether I should be embarassed or proud.

9:56 AM
Definitely a proud achievement.

It's the seconds I check if there's something new then go afk again, I guess.

Loading a page other than home page counts as a visit.

yeah loading it is... otherwise I'd mess it up because I leave my office computer on all the time.
(office computer is on Windows and boot time would be such a waste)

2 minutes+ every day would add up to a significant total.. definitely better to just leave it on all the time.

it is the countless passwords that matter too.

10:01 AM
not better for the environment though I think hehe

power comes from France's nuclear plants... so nothing to worry here.
/kidding

As we speak, there was a minor power interruption here.
I figure it was the signal from above to root for energy conservation.

may be it was a sign.
maybe not.
We have quite a lot of wind turbines over here... so if there was enough wind there is enough energy. But it won't be sufficient for all people to drive a Tesla still.
They should invent sailcars... Mercedes Yacht

lol

Q: Force answers as accepted

luchonachoSome users do not mark an answer as "solved my question", even though they leave a comment stating it solved the issue. For example this one. What can be made about it? Can a flag be issued in order for moderators to mark as accepted? These type of cases seem to me unambiguous. Ps: my question ...

10:15 AM
Renewable energy sector is not up to scratch here. Too expensive and output doesn't match conventional means.

it was introduced here so we can sell the technology to the rest of the world, I guess.
Now that selling nuclear plants has become more difficult.

@jokerdino which surprises me.
considering all the jerryrigged CNG cars

I don't know if the problem is the technology or the lobbyista.

definitely the latter imho

Why Irleand, why not me?
free iPhones for all Irish :)

10:28 AM
ugh poor them

Bloomberg says 14.5 billion

$ > €

oh yeah

> It would be great if someone help me out to create the script file in unix
Please sir. Take your question to unix.se

@jokerdino homework? Looks like it.

10:33 AM
now that you mention it..

xD @"I'm not (being) racist but"
“It's been a great community,” said Torvalds. “People are so nice, in general. I wouldn't say polite. Very many people are never, ever polite. You can just feel the fact that people want to work together and want to make a better system. That really makes for a great community.”

@Takkat anyway, I closed it because he x-posted it on unix.se.

10:54 AM
Not my nicest comment, but it'll do
oh the post is already gone
nevermind
