* until proven otherwise :+)

haha @Rinzwind agreed!

Thing is ... bacteria do have some kind of awareness.

@Zanna I know, but it's still alive and interacts with its environment. By the way, there are three kingdoms (or 4 with archaea), not 5. The protists (not protoctista) are still animals.
So, the defining factor is a central nervous system? If so, would eating, say, insects be OK?

Chocolate dipped fried ants? :P

Also, would you eat meat if the—admittedly horrendous—practices of modern animal husbandry were improved or is it the death of the animal itself that's the problem?

10:03 AM
@Rinzwind Maak me niet gek!

@Rinzwind Loads of edible insects. Colombians eat ants like pop corn.

4 AM

and i'm hungry

@terdon oh my knowledge is out of date?! I am teaching this in GCSE syllabus 0.0
Let's say... I wouldn't eat insects because I can extend compassion to them... but not so much to yeast...

10:06 AM
Anyone who's able to help me with my graphics drivers?
Just upgraded to 16.04 but now it says graphics: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe
The things suggested here at askubuntu are not working at all: http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/42362/gallium-used-instead-of-intel-nvidia

I would never eat meat personally if I could survive without it, but assuming horrendous farming practices weren't an issue, I would consider my choice eccentric rather than right-on :)

@Zanna Well, I certainly wouldn't call protists a kingdom of their own anyway. But, as I just found out, you're quite right and some do consider them so. Whatever, the whole "kingdoms" thing is not really very rigorous.
@Zanna I see.
Thanks for explaining :)

@terdon yeah I agree, I actually think classification is BS & science that proceeds by cutting things into pieces and putting the fragments into categories & treat all the contents as the same is... not good methology. All the best bits of science make links, for example E=mc^2 :)
thank you for expressing an interest

Q: Authentication vsftpd account using remote LDAP user

Ruwan RanganathI'm trying to authenticate vsftpd from LDAP logins which hosted remotely another server . vsftpd hosted on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.13.0-48-generic x86_64) amazon aws . from the LDAP server i have these details . user : cn=demo,dc=ldap,dc=foobar,dc=com Password : testp...

Well, the so-called Aristotelian approach of cutting complex systems down into simple bits, understanding said bits and then extrapolating to the system has served us very well for a long time. We've now realized that it's not good enough for studying systems and that there are the emergent qualities that can only be observed when studying the system as a whole. Hence systems sciences. but still, the old fogeys did lay the groundwork.

10:20 AM
I concede your well-made point. I made an unjust sweeping statement :)

@Zanna Sorry about that. I did my post-doctoral work on systems biology so have spent more time than I probably should have thinking about this sort of thing :)

heh don't be sorry for teaching & helping <-- makes stuff better ^_^

wooo \ o / easy rep in 10 minutes

Yeah, I was just cleaving a little too close to that fine line between teaching and pontificating. I tend to do that :)

Q: Using awk or sed to cut a line

SeraphimI am trying to get just the configure arguments of compiled nginx on Ubuntu 14.04 using a command line. Running /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -V gives us: nginx version: nginx/1.8.1 built by gcc 4.8.4 (Ubuntu 4.8.4-2ubuntu1~14.04.1) built with OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014 TLS SNI support e...

10:24 AM
@Serg I always do it with scissors

@JacobVlijm Axes work even better :p

@Serg will you post that or shall I?

@Serg I can offer some chocolate dipped fried ants if you want?

@JacobVlijm if you mean this cut a line question, i already have posted awk solution, but feel free to post alternative with some other tool
Or even awk . . . if there's any shorter version . . . .

@Serg I meant that question, but with the ax or scissors

10:27 AM
@JacobVlijm I doubt axes and scissors work in terminal XD

...Let me try...

They works one time! :=)
And are the perfect encryption tools too!

I did it!

and 1 more advantage
you don't need to remember a passphrase

XD

10:42 AM
@JacobVlijm secure disk wipe.
Maybe...
I can't really tell which part of that pile was born as a hard disk once.

Dynamite also works really well

@Serg you might want to add an explanation of stdout vs stderr to your answer since that is the main issue.

@Serg HCl (aq)

@terdon done and done

Sorry that the "Sue Mistress" question is gone. I think we should allow some overlap with other sites :)

10:52 AM
@JacobVlijm It hasn't been caught by smoke detector, right? Do you have a link to the deleted Q for me?

I regret every morning that I am still awake

never mind, I found it by manually trying to enter all post URLs that do not show up on the front page from the last hours...
close EOL (Ubuntu 9.10) askubuntu.com/q/797735/367990

11:07 AM
sigh.....why can't i control my sleep.....

@Serg Maybe @Videonauth should send you some of his pills...
Or simply try warm milk with honey. Or valerian.

@ByteCommander last year I would drink three or four cups of coffee mixed up with water, basically distilled coffee.
And that helped
I would pass out around 8 or 9 pm
Not right away, of course, through out the day

Q: Thought : Stopping Spam posts automatically

RajaThis is kind of Discussion post, If I am a spammer I will not paste here links from *pastebin*(assume wild card can be anything and any length) and already to upload images we are providing a platform to end users. So can we simply stop atleast some percentage of spam posts by making few filter...

But still , that really helped

@Serg Coffee made you fall asleep? o.O

11:16 AM
@ByteCommander yup . . . weird , but true

Does valerian make you hyperactive then?

Never tried it, actually. I should

11:30 AM
Welp , with 65 rep under the belt , I leave for the next 9 hours or so . . . Also , will be yelled at today probably , because I won't be able to wake up on time and take my friend's family to aquarium

Good night. Sleep well.

I read an interesting research once, about what communication without the non-verbal elements (like on internet, like here) can do to people and their communication. Not always for the best. email- wars are well-known.

and now I will be using Kubuntu

@StefanoPalazzo Let this one get deleted as abusive or roll back the self-vandalism edit? askubuntu.com/a/743023/367990 Not sure if the initial version is worth saving it.

thanks for bringing this up

12:32 PM
@StefanoPalazzo I thought you suspended him, he jsut posted a (valuable?) question: askubuntu.com/q/797765/367990

They posted before the suspension @ByteCommander
The question looks okay.

Strange guy. Why did he do the self-vandalism then?

I'm going to stay positive and say they're having a very bad day.
It's probably this Ubuntu thing. Never works properly. :)

12:50 PM
@ByteCommander or he used a location with an open internet and someone mis-used it :P

Who knows...

1:14 PM
How can someone with 1.5k on SO write such an awful question? askubuntu.com/q/797761/518562

Not saying it's a good question, but what is exactly the awful part?

pokes @Rinzwind

loopbacki?
@JacobVlijm I also don't get it. The question looks fair enough to me.
Maybe your edit :)

1:29 PM
@StefanoPalazzo :) thanks!

Wow. This is probably quite real:

Q: How can I remove LINUX/EBURY from Ubuntu 16.04?

nogueira13I was alerted that I had a virus in my Ubuntu 16.04 which I installed a few weeks ago. I verified the system with chkrootkit to see if it found anything and it did indeed find "LINUX/EBURY". I searched Google for information about how I can eliminate this virus but found nothing. Does anyone kn...

I don't have time to do it now, so if anyone wants to post an answer, here's a good reference:

2:25 PM
rootkit != virus
@ThomasW. why you poke me? me no pokemon :(

@Rinzwind I know, but I didn't want to change the OP on that. It is indicative of their level of understanding and helps answerers know how to phrase their answers.

@terdon that page you link to seems odd. I find that file on other places than they say.

I found it there on my Arch. Maybe it's yet another file that UBuntu decided to move?

should be /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/

Anyway, I really don't know, that was just my first google result

2:35 PM
was pinged but was busy
@Rinzwind Because I commented on one of your answers, and then ten minutes ago edited it

on it btw @terdon

so i need you to poke/review

dont make me regret voting for you >:-D

2:42 PM
@Rinzwind Looks good. I would also suggest that the OP change their ssh credentials since, apparently, those are this rootkit's target

oh yes I saw that
check!
now here is hoping @ParanoidPanda does not see that topic.

That's why you pinged him...

Ofcourse >:-D
Making Panda more paranoid is a goal in itself >:)
@terdon ssh -G 2>&1 | grep -e illegal -e unknown > /dev/null && echo "System clean" || echo "System infected" seems a check too
from comments

now to sit back and watch the rep flow in :=)

Q: Compiling PHP with apache mod_php on Linux

Mugoma J. OkombaI first asked this at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/38319400/unable-to-locate-apxs2-on-linux but it's probably not the right place for this. I need to compile PHP with apache module on Kubuntu. I have installed both apache2 and apache2-dev. But I am unable to locate apxs2 nor apxs. Any id...

3:35 PM
wrong decision to install kubuntu

what happened

I better try mint or Ubuntu GNOME

user136984
@Zacharee1 Until what?

@grooveplex Rudeness begets rudeness.

5:13 PM
Good morning.
I managed to finally get the SVG icon issue fixed.

5:24 PM
@NathanOsman mageia 6 is evil

How come? :D

crashed :P
also was still installing an hour ago

On boot?
I managed to get it to boot with some hacking >:)
I set VirtualBox's execution cap to 20% when first booting and then when it gets to the splash, I restore it to 100%.
The sad part is that the technique actually worked reproducibly.
All that being said, I don't like it.
If I wanted an RPM-based system, Fedora or CentOS is the way to go.

6:11 PM
Hey all quick question, I'm trying to get my grandma's wifi to work but it's not working anyone got any experience? I have kubuntu and the connection just times out.

@Thijser any of fifty billion reasons

Yes I noticed that there are a lot, can you advice me how to quickly find which one it is?

have you tried searching the site? there are tons of wifi-related questions (may just be the most common hardware question on this site)

Yes I tried the search, tried looking at the wifi driver instal but that didn work

if you are convinced nothing in the site solves your problem, then consider posting a question? that way you get more eyeballs on your problem

6:15 PM
Couldn't find aditional drivers (suggested elsewhere)
Yes but I'm slightly time limited as I have to go in about an hour
$ lspci -knn | grep Net -A2

means?

@CodeX yep
All questions on Ask Ubuntu, to some degree, involve Nvidia and asparagus

6:34 PM
Any idea what it means when sudo dhclient wlan0 hangs?

use sudo dhclient -v wlan0 and see what's really going on
because I doubt it's 'hanging', rather I think it's waiting for a DHCP reply :P

It keeps giving those same messages what do they mean?

@ParanoidPanda doom and gloom (aka wolfboyft)

user136984
@Zacharee1: Thought so... 7 days now...

dun dun dunnnnnn
what if he gets suspended right away again

user136984
6:45 PM
I hope that mods get an alert or something when a user suspended for so long gets unsuspended.

user136984
He might, but what if he's already done the damage?

dunno
we can ask the mods here to be on alert for any activity

user136984
I doubt he'll come here though, more likely the Arqade main chat room, that's where he feels comfortable and tried to release my information last time.

user136984
It's probably fortunate that he doesn't feel very welcomed in this room.

user136984
@Zacharee1: But yes, I would feel more comfortable if the mods did keep a bit of an eye on his activities at least for a week or something.

6:50 PM
all they would have to do is check for the latest time seen
if it's recent, then check actual acitivity
are there active mods in the Arqade chat?

user136984
I don't know... Haven't been there in a long while (I only went there to monitor him)...

user136984
Don't have any real plans to go back there either...

user136984
But I think that there is a mod who is there and sometimes comes here...

Hmmm FATAL: Module wl not found

user136984
@Zacharee1: Hmm... Seemingly there are a few mods around there frequently.

6:58 PM
good I guess
you may want to just drop a message in

user136984
@Zacharee1: To who though? And what would I say?

user136984
You mean just contact one of the mods who is frequent there and ask them to just keep an eye out?

just put a message in saying there's a user (wolfboyft) who may know your contact details and plans to release them when his suspension is up
ping a mod who was there recently when you say it

user136984
You mean actually post it into the Arqade main room?

yeah

user136984
7:04 PM
I'm not sure that that would necessarily be a good idea (especially if he somehow sees it and it makes it more likely he'll do something bad)... I would much prefer to do it in private. Maybe I can contact one of the mods here and they can just alert some of the mods there to the possibility of trouble when he comes back?

maybe

user136984
I don't know... I'll have to think about it...

user136984
@Zacharee1: Who do you think would be the best mod to speak to?

idk

user136984
Well, seem to be no mods around now so when one comes on I'll sort it out with them. :)

user136984
7:18 PM
Why is it so quiet in here at the moment?

user136984
Great... Now it's gone down to 6 days... >:{

user136984
Early in the morning it said 8, then 7 in the day, and now 6! That's 3 days in one!

@ParanoidPanda people probably having vacations and ditching AU :)

You need a chat mod?

The funny thing, when you think about it, is that UNIX, which started it all, itself is closed-source

7:31 PM
@NathanOsman for Arqade
woflboyft is close to the end of his suspension
last seen 1 hr ago!

It would be nice if there way an easy way to reach any mod, on any SE site, by email
[username]@[sitename]
Or maybe even grooveplex@users.askubuntu.com

@Zacharee1 The chat room or the site?!?

chat
@grooveplex no....

user136984
@Nathan: Yes... I'm just slightly concerned about something, I don't know if you remember the guy who used to come in here and call me "roboduck" and attack me verbally, but he got himself suspended for a year from the arqade site because he started being nasty to me in there in their main chat. Anyway, his suspension ends next Tuesday and the last time I spoke to him it sounded like he might do something like release my personal information or start attacking me again.

user136984
So I just wondered if the mods frequent there could be asked to keep an eye on him at least for the first week or something?

7:37 PM
you know the user in real life?

user136984
I do.

you do?

user136984
Yes

user136984
Or at least, I did...

Then you can easily call the cops on them, right?
or whatever

7:38 PM
so then he does know your address?
@grooveplex it's "coppers" in British :PP

user136984
I think he might, he either realised he didn't have it, or he just decided not to come and stab me like he said he would...

I.. don't know how to help you

so you actually know him, as an acquaintance?

user136984
Yes, I've met him at least twice.

@grooveplex we fly over an patrol the property with guns :p
@ParanoidPanda o_O. In what setting?

user136984
7:40 PM
He used to be a friend of mine (for a very short time)...

rly
did you introduce him to here?

user136984
No, he tracked me down here...

oh
...
creepy

@Zacharee1 good plan

user136984
Indeed...

7:41 PM
@grooveplex ikr

No wonder you're paranoid panda...

lol

I don't know if it's what I'd do but I think I'd call the cops or something
Like seriously
If it's that bad
I don't know

@terdon is there a tool for viewing how many questions were marked as dupe of a specific one ? For example, I would be interested to see if anyone marked things as dupes of any of my questions

I suggested it too @grooveplex

7:43 PM
i am pretty sure stalking is a crime in the UK
report it to the police if you have sufficient evidence

not to mention online threats
he has a chat record here

@Serg there's some kind of stack exchange data explorer

user136984
If he does something again like give me a death threat or actually release my important personal information online (like my address) then I will file a report with the police.

I'd suggest you do it now

yeah\

7:45 PM
Better safe than, uh, sorry

otherwise, your stuff is online

@ParanoidPanda also if it's up to the level that he might actually issue a death threat, then I'd certainly file a report ASAP

@grooveplex there's plenty of stack exchange tools , but i've never heard of something like that - checking dupes of a specific question

@ParanoidPanda only you can assess the severity of the situation. if it already affects you significantly psychologically, then i would say you can go ahead to talk to the popo

user136984
@grooveplex: I'll have to think about it, but it's been a while, maybe I should just give him one last chance. You know, maybe (probably not, but hopefully) he's changed... Also, no idea how to file a report and it doesn't feel like what he said to me here is enough evidence... I don't know, I'll have to have a look into it.

7:48 PM
walk into the nearest station and ask about it

I need to keep up with my answers and fix my sleep . . . . This has become quite ridiculous situation that I go to sleep at 5 AM and wake up at 2 - 4 pm

tell them the situation and they can tell you if a report is a good idea right now

@Serg o.0

@Serg lol

Go to sleep already

7:49 PM
@grooveplex but i just woke up ! Oo

he just woke up :p

user136984
@Zacharee1: Ok, I'll look into it. :)

<.< Zach gets it right

user136984
That was a very odd message I just saw flagged up... :D

wut

7:51 PM
And I have sooo many questions on my list. Most of them are oldies , so I don't worry about time pressure, but still . . .

user136984
It was something about whether males would mind being controlled directly or indirectly... But then I didn't see the context of it so it would seem strange...

I believe you can file a report online @ParanoidPanda
Harassment is a perfectly fine reason

He should probably talk to someone in person, in case it isn't reportable just yet

Hmmm

idk the British laws on online harassment and stalking

user136984
7:53 PM
I'll have to look into it, maybe ask a few knowledgeable friends of mine...

surely zacharee counts as a knowledgeable person amirite

i don't see that resolution often lmao

That seems messed up

7:57 PM
you've seen it before? @edwinksl

actually no
i should have said never

who else here uses 1920x1080

a lot of tvs have resolution settings on their end. I usually configure my tv , not Ubuntu
