I don't think it's going to work. A whole section doesn't show up, and I can't even connect my domain to it (the button is non-functional
But, here's the site I have now: techyteen.tk @HeatherBrown

@HeatherBrown (whew!)
OK, now I know I didn't offend/aggravate/... you, I can go sleep the sleep of innocents! @HeatherBrown
Good night all!
@Zacharee1 Oh, and you didn't change the rate: 10$ for the first hour, and then you can go down to 5$/hour for the rest.

Yeah, give me a bit

IMHO, you should be asking 50$ for the first hour, 25 for the next ones and

yeesh

and set typical total rates for the stuff you do.
So "Installing PC running Ubuntu with LibreOffice/Antivirus/Printer" typical: 65,5$

Weebly... Ew :p

Anyway, I'm going to sleep before I fall face-down on my keybodjhgkjhfjdgfjsdhbv,ndn

@HeatherBrown I know I know. I'm not good enough with manual HTML, though, and I can't seem to even find one that lets me import
Also, hosting

user139252
@Zacharee1Apache, home server, html5up.net

user139252

user139252
That's how I've got mine setup

12:10 AM
WHY WON'T THIS STUPID COLOR CHANGE

user139252
Then, you can also use let's encrypt for free ssl

Hmm. Home hosting won't work
ISP blocks 80
But that looks like an interesting builder or whatever

user139252
Your ISP is lame :p

user139252
Verizon out here even unlocked port 25 for me because I asked nicely

We have Service Electric (PenTeleData)
Welp, I fixed the text issue
Just had to use the actual graphical editor -_-
@HeatherBrown ooo, I like these themes

12:21 AM
@Seth are you saying I gave enough warning this time or not enough? :P
We're kind of in limbo now that @ParanoidPanda posted on meta.AU.

@NathanOsman I'm saying you didn't give anyone notice. No one is going to see your chat message.
@NathanOsman meh, just post it.

@HeatherBrown What HTML/CSS editor would you recommend? It's better if it works in Windows, but I guess Ubuntu-only is fine
Yay
I found the editor I was playing with over the summer
Brackets

12:36 AM
Well... I'm mobile ATM.
So maybe I'll write up something for next Sunday.
That should be enough notice :)

indeed :)

user139252
@Zacharee1 I use vim, tbh

@HeatherBrown I'm going to sound stupid, but how do I make a site with this HTML5UP?
@HeatherBrown wow

user139252
You download the template, open it up in an editor, change what you need, save the files to your server

Hmm
OK
I'll have to figure out what Brackets is doing then

user139252
12:42 AM
I keep the page open in a browser window, tweak things in vim, refresh the page to test, repeat

Same here. Except for the vim part :P
Sublime FTW.

@HeatherBrown @NathanOsman Brackets has live preview mode and is by Adobe. It's also really fast. When you click text in the editor it tells you what it corresponds to by flashing the live preview

Brackets isn't bad.
I usually prefer to have the page open in a browser though because previews are usually lousy at best.

Yeah.
And if Atom ever gets some performance improvements, it would be a nice editor.
But right now, it's almost as bad as Chrome.

o_O
I haven't had any issues whatsoever, and I use it a lot.
Sublime will probably always be better, simply because it is compiled, but atom is catching up fast.

12:50 AM
@Seth it is in browser. it just needs Chrome

user139252
I like Chromium :p

I like Opera :P

user139252
I love this time of the year... Hot ciders are 50% off at Target

I read that as hot coders.
@Zacharee1 use another port?

@JourneymanGeek bad for business

user139252
12:56 AM
I would love a hot coder, too

user139252
You use .tk, right?

user139252
Set up your A record to go to another port

@Zacharee1 in that case, invest a little money and get a VPS :p
@HeatherBrown ._.
whaaaat?

does that let people connect to 80 while it actually goes to somewhere else?
@JourneymanGeek I DONT HAVE A LITTLE MONEY
:p

I think its called something else
port redirection

user139252
12:58 AM
I'm pretty sure that can be done

user139252
Or set up URL forwarding

Typically A records don't care about ports

user139252
Get two domains, set one to URL forwarding (frame method) to the other domain at a different port

user139252
And then that forward target could be hosted at your home

@HeatherBrown fun...
I think my ISP might already be suspicious enough with all the traffic from the Minecraft server
Apparently it's against the TOS to host a web server (MC technically isn't, but I'd say it's gray area)
ping me if you talk to me
I'm editing

1:12 AM
resists urge to ping Zach

user139252
@Zacharee1 I didn't think ISPs really cared as long as it was nothing malicious or bandwidth demanding

@HeatherBrown Apparently not :p
They also throttle torrents, which I'm pretty sure was made illegal recently
I need a name for my business
Any ideas @HeatherBrown @Seth ?

user139252
Foobs

user139252
That's a good name

Srsly
pls

user139252
1:20 AM
@Zacharee1, yes it is illegal to throttle

user139252
Don't ask me

Something tech related
Generic

user139252
I go by Brown Tech

Hmm. Wander Tech doesn't have that ring to it :p

user139252
Wanderlust Tech

1:23 AM
I knew you were going to say that -_-

user139252
My home NAS is called the Brown Cloud

user139252
I'm not the most creative for names

user139252
Tech10

user139252

user139252

user139252

GCC - General Computing Company

@HeatherBrown Your name works well though :p
hmm

@Zacharee1 you're asking me to name something?

sure

I couldn't name a doornail -.-
(I'm pretty sure I just made the expression up..)
@Zacharee1 What ISP?

Service Electric
See if you can connect to xpw1.no-ip.org:62447

1:37 AM
service electric? Better'n Comcast. Remember CISA? Well the final version they tucked in a budget bill (to their shame) included net neutrality loopholes..
Ubuntu like a BOSS!

So if this live preview opens at 127.0.0.1, how can I make it so I can connect to it at my actual IP?
(Windows)

(via G+)

yikes
The CSS is too confusing on this template
time to try another

user139252
@Zacharee1 on a home server?

Yeah
I want you guys to be able to see the live preview

user139252
1:58 AM
Find your public IP, copy it, register an A record with your registrar

@HeatherBrown I have port forwarding and No-IP. If I try to connect to my IP thru the web browser or if I try the No-IP address, I get connection refused
heheheh I can remove the attribution heheheh
But I won't, because this is a great template
and it isn't intrusive

user139252
That's NAT. Put your computer in the DMZ

wat
watwatwat

user139252
In your router settings

I think the site's coming along nicely though
erm

user139252
2:17 AM
It's because the router doesn't want internal requests to the external ip

hmm
ok
I think
So I set the DMZ private IP to mine?
It doesn't work locally, so I'm going to give up for now
How do I put two elements on one row?

user139252
?

like columns

user139252
Depends on the element

this              that
this              that

user139252
2:22 AM
Span styles usually work well

Can you give me an example?
Like I said, I'm not good with manual HTML
Got it with tr and td
At least I did have it
there we go

Well that wasn't it...

Hi everyone. I have a problem with my ubuntu upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10. During the update, I had a problem with the octave package, which seems to be a documented bug (bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/octave/+bug/1511022), and it basically told me that my system might be unstable and to run some dpkg reconfigure command. I tried to wait overnight to see if there is some progress as it was trying to "Process triggers for libc-bin". It's stuck at that. What should I do?

TO THE SANDBOX!!! - jkjk

lololololol

@Prabhpreet yikes. Is the HDD light on?

@Seth I have a laptop and it only has three lights: power, battery and caps lock :(

3:04 AM
lol. I was afraid of that. I have the same problem :/

You can "feel" a hard drive spinning as long as it's not an ssd

Interesting Q:

Q: What documentation can I remove from Ubuntu server? (e.g. manpages?)

opticyclicI need an Ubuntu server with VM with networking and ssh capabilities. I have several full instances so I don't need this instance to have any documentation. Can I remove man pages without removing the packages? Are there other docs (apart from man pages) on the server?

I don't know- the cooling fan is making a louder noise. I can access all files though, so hd should be working

@hbdgaf generally they always spin
@Prabhpreet I believe what they want to know is whether or not the hard drive is actually working on something (i.e. processing that libc-bin thing)
@HeatherBrown How do I set up the email thing?

@Prabhpreet Well, this is kind of a tricky situation. I suggest you ask a question on the main site to get more formal advice. That's what I'd do anyway.

3:10 AM
@Zacree1 In that case, I'm pretty sure no. It's not working on the libc thing. The system has been on the libc thing the whole night
@Seth Yeah, I'll try that. I think I found a similar situation though: askubuntu.com/questions/690654/…
Just one last question- any idea on how to abort the upgrade during "Installing the upgrades" process of the upgrade GUI?

I wouldn't
You should be able to kill the process using the killall command, but it might not be a good idea

@Prabhpreet If it's still downloading there should be a cancel button, but once it actually starts the upgrade you can't, you'll break everything.
(unless there's a way it can undo the operation, but I don't think there is)

I think I'll try killall. Thanks :)

You're probably going to break something
If you have no important data, oh well, just reinstall
if you have something you want to keep, don't reboot until you've backed it up
@HeatherBrown @Seth 1st draft: techyteen.net16.net/index.html

ugh, giant hosting ad?

3:24 AM
uh oh
what?

there was a popup hosting add the first time I clicked the link.

oh
well then I won't use that host :p

otherwise looks fine @Zacharee1, besides being obviously created through a service.

I had to edit it
It's weird that that ad came up
I'm using 000webhost

@Zacharee1 yeah I know

3:27 AM
@Zacharee1 000webhosts got compromised semi recently

@JourneymanGeek I saw their DDoS warning

@Zacharee1 is this a static page?

I'm only using them because I needed a quick solution
@JourneymanGeek huh?

(if its a static page, and I can remember, I could probably throw you a little hosting. hell, I wouldn't mind hosting php stuff but I'd have to work out how to fix permissions and shit)

Well, I don't know what static means. Static vs what?

3:30 AM
plain html vs say php

I don't see any PHP

user139252
@Zacharee1 what email thing?

Does that look like a good image for the Services section?
@HeatherBrown contact form

user139252
Php

user139252
And you need sendmail installed on your server

3:32 AM
Oh fun
Well I guess I'll save that for another time

@Zacharee1 Killall worked! Thanks!

@Zacharee1 static meaning it's just text/images. You're not running any server side operations.

@Seth I wouldn't know
@Prabhpreet Do you have any important data?

Yeah, but on a different partition

@Prabhpreet OK, that's good. So now, just reinstall Ubuntu 15.10 and you should be good

3:35 AM
@Zacharee1 Will do. Thanks

user139252
@Zacharee1 if you don't have any php or JScript, it is static

@HeatherBrown JS is considered static too, iirc. it's not using server resources, and served directly to the user.

Well, then it is static until I put an email thing in @JourneymanGeek

user139252
I thought some JScript was server side, no? Probably not

user139252
Yeah, @Seth, you're right

3:38 AM
naw, JS is client side :)

@HeatherBrown maybe JQuery? iFrame, password stuff?
what's the point of an image being royalty free if you still have to pay? grr

user139252
Ajax is server side

@Zacharee1 no strings attached.
royalty free != free.

hmm
I know that

@Zacharee1 "Virus/malware removal" - does that include the flu virus? :P
I know a few people who could use that service...

@NathanOsman If it's on the computer
:p

The design is nice, though.

Otherwise I'd have to call up Ms. Frizzle and ask to use the schoolbus
@NathanOsman thanks

Q: Dual boot pre installed Kali 2

Skib RsSalutations - I have Kali Linux 2.0 (jessie) installed as main OS. I want to install Windows 8.1/10 on dual-boot. The problem I am facing is in every tutorial, Windows is the pre installed OS. What should be done now? Can someone direct me to a proper thread?

user139252
@NathanOsman you aren't old. I loved that show, too :p

@NathanOsman did I told you a joke about touch command?

I don't think you did.

@NathanOsman what did touch command said to itself?

I don't know.

5:30 AM
@NathanOsman I cannot touch myself
touch /bin/touch
touch: cannot touch ‘/bin/touch’: Permission denied

user139252
@NathanOsman I started using vim a few months ago, in place of nano. I like vim now :p

I ought to be doing that but haven't gotten around to it.

5:49 AM
See, I knew it would become the eventual successor to C :P

user139252
Go can import libraries that aren't locally installed?

Sort of. If a file imports a package that isn't locally available, "go get" can be used to download it.
In fact, that's the easiest way to compile most Go apps.
"go get github.com/some-person/some-app" will fetch the app's source code, all of its dependencies, and build the binary.
If the package is available locally, obviously it isn't fetched.

Q: Editing the lsb-release information

Marko BlankaI would like to customize Ubuntu live CD and it's mostly done , but after changing the the /etc/lsb-release file , i can't add any new repository ! So , How can i change the lsb-release to have my own id and codename like this: DISTRIB_ID=Marcolinux DISTRIB_RELEASE=1.0 DISTRIB_CODENAME=Blanka D...

6:10 AM
On a completely unrelated note...
If anyone wants a nice 1080p wallpaper for a dual-monitor setup, I humbly offer this.

Hey Everyone - brand new on this chat on here (although have been using AskUbuntu for a while) - are we allowed to ask technical questions in here?

Sure!
And welcome to the chat.

Thanks!

I can't promise that I'll be able to answer it but we can try :P

So anyway, I'm trying to do http to https redirects on my Ubuntu 12.04 server - I have two servers actually, and it's been working fine on one for a while, but when I went to try and do it on the other one it just doesn't seem to want to work at all - I'm using this in the apache2.conf file:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName <ORIGINAL_URL>
Redirect permanent / <NEW_URL>
</VirtualHost>

6:18 AM
What do you mean by "it doesn't work" - what happens instead?

absolutely nothing - when I try to browse to the http://<URL> it just doesn't load

You have the correct syntax, so it should work.

but if I browse to the https://<URL> (which is set up with another VirtualHost entry in the apache2.conf) it works fine

Sounds like Apache isn't listening on port 80.

actually that would explain a lot
how can I get apache to listen on port 80

6:20 AM
There should be a directive "Listen 80" somewhere in apache2.conf or one of the configuration files it includes.
Is there a "Listen 8443 https" directive anywhere in the file? If SSL is working, there certainly should be.

I tried searching for "listen" in the apache2.conf file and it's nowhere to be found
maybe it's in another config file?

(By the way, this is mostly from memory since I switched from Apache to nginx a couple years ago.)
@MarcBressman It could be... let me check where the other config files are...

I found a /etc/apache2/ports.conf file

Ah, yes.
That's the one.

oh wait, it looks like it might be misconfigured - it has this: "Listen 80" while my other server has this "Listen *:80"

6:23 AM
Those two are supposed to have the same effect though.

nope, that didn't seem to do anything (after changing it and doing service apache2 restart)

Hmm... let's check and see if Apache is actually listening on the port.

ok - can you advise how to do that?

You can do that with this command:
sudo netstat -nlp | grep 80
If there is no output, it means no application is listening on the port.

I got a bunch of output

6:25 AM
Hrm.

is this what you're looking to see:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1051/apache2

Yup.
So it is listening on the port.
It just isn't responding to requests correctly.
Now try this:
curl --verbose 'http://localhost'

ok - can I ask what that does?

That will print out HTTP headers being returned from the server for a request.
That will help us see what the server is returning when a request is made.

ok, should I enter in to this chat everything it returned - it's a bunch

6:29 AM
Maybe try this: paste.ubuntu.com

So it's responding to the request with the default VirtualHost.
And opening http://localhost:80 in the browser doesn't display any text?
It should say something like "This is the default web page for this server..."

so this server is located in a remote location - but I'm VPN'ed into it - if I do http://<local server IP>:80 it works and brings up the default text

But not when you enter the domain name, correct?

let me see if I have any domain names set up that will just use the default virtual host

6:33 AM
What's in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled? Those are the VirtualHosts that are currently enabled, including the default one.

000-default -> ../sites-available/default

Is that the only file in there?

under /etc/apache2/sites-enabled, yup

Hmm... I'm afraid that's all I can think of to try.

i had used webmin initially when I was learning ubuntu, and it seems to put all the <VirtualHost> entries in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

6:36 AM
Oh...

do you think it could be a firewall thing?
like the router firewall that the server is behind isn't letting http traffic through?

Is the server publicly accessible?
(Can it be reached directly by IP address?)

not on port 80, but on port 443

Some ISPs block port 80.

yeah, i was just thinking that
it's optimum (cablevision) and I vaguely recall when I had it a while ago I had to enable port 80 somewhere - am looking through their online settings right now - i wonder if that's it

6:38 AM
If you can access the port through a VPN but not publicly, that would be a good guess as to what's causing that.

i think that might be it - it says port 80 off - i'm turning it on right now - give me a min for it to reboot the remote cable modem

Sure.

damn, its not letting me make the changes from a remote location - maybe on the PC that is VPN'ed in it will let me - give me another min - and thanks for all your help!

No problem. Glad to do it.
