Some folks should not be allowed to drive. :/

I concur.

Alright. I'm going to go to the store and get "Bill" something with a flavor and something to use for the bathroom. It involved a fake pout and sad eyes which I'm a sucker for. So, off to the store. Back in a bit.

@KGIII it's an editor kind of like atom or sublime, interesting.
funny, they didn't update the main site on the license...

@Seth Sorry, I was setting up a printer.
The * means that backButton is a pointer to a QAbstractButton.
Python doesn't have pointers, everything is a reference.

💩
(I got a litter box.)

@HeatherBrown That may or may not have happened to us a few years ago. Lost power because a truck ran into a nearby power pole.

On that note. I am going to take a break and bug She Who Must Be Obeyed for a while. I shall return.

@NathanOsman but since there's a type declaration it's being allocated and assigned at the same time, right?

Yes - sort of.
Pointers are a distinct type which always occupies the same amount of memory - enough space to store the address pointed to.
So you're declaring space to store the address of a QAbstractButton.
...and then stuffing the address of that particular button into it.

4:40 AM
@NathanOsman aha! That's the part I was having trouble figuring out. So we're essentially pulling up the address of the backbutten so we can use it?

Yes.

Thanks! That helps. Not sure that can be directly translated to python though :/

But if you're translating to Python, you can ignore the * for two reasons: (1) Python doesn't have pointers (2) Python doesn't have typed variables.

right

So I'm guessing it would look something like this:
back_button = wizard.button(QWizard.BackButton)
(You could name it backButton but Python style guidelines suggest underscore_names for variables :P)

4:43 AM
haha that's funny, because a friend of mine always calls me the python guy and here I am unknowingly following the python style guidelines too xD
@NathanOsman ahh, thanks. That makes sense. QWizard.BackButton is of type QAbstractButton.. duh.
I'm slow today :/
@NathanOsman How'd that go then?

I use three different naming conventions.
- camelCase - for C++ and JavaScript
- underscores_between_words - for Python and Jinja
- InitialCamelCase - Go and QML

printers can be.. tricky.

@Seth It wasn't too bad. It's much easier than it used to be. It's a WiFi enabled printer, so all I have to do is load the CUPS config. page and click a couple buttons to enable it for printing.

oh nice!

Everything else pretty much "just works".
It also lets you email documents to it, so that's cool.

4:49 AM
@NathanOsman so what is your opinion on Hungarian notation? I know an experienced programmer who (figuratively speaking) swears by it. Not because it helps the main developer but because he can walk into a place and understand the project so much better because he knows what type it is, whether it is being passed into a function, what the scope is, etc, just by looking at the names.
ok, you know it's bed time when you aren't completing your thoughts lol.

That was extremely common in the days of Windows API programming :P As for an opinion it does sort-of depend on the language. Go, for example, is very strongly-typed. You can't accidentally assign to the wrong type so it makes no sense there. C/C++, well, I don't really like it but I can see a good case for it.

you know Nathan, SE might be interested in using your script internally..
@NathanOsman Guess when he started :P

Okay, I must confess, I do make one exception to that.
In C++, I prefix class member variables with "m".

He doesn't used it so much to prevent assigning things wrong as he does to just understand what is happening in other people's code. (He works for MS and does a lot of travelling to help customers with their projects)

@Seth "MS" ah, that explains it then.
They're really big on that over there.

4:53 AM
that and he started when MS was.. oh.. well before Windows 3 iirc.

All of their sample code uses Hungarian notation.
@Seth Lol, that's long before I started with the Windows API :P

looking it up, Win32 wasn't even released until Windows NT xD
(although they did have earlier versions of it)
@NathanOsman speaking of Hungarian notation... plus.google.com/u/0/116195714793334351578/posts/eDXM9duvDg5
xD

Random fact: it actually was possible to run certain 32-bit applications on Windows 3.1 using something called Win32s.

okay, bed time now. ttyl!

@Seth Goodnight.

Is there a way to purge a package withouth installing more? Like I try to remove openssh-client and apt-get says it will install openssh-server and other stuff

@Wally Is there already a question?
Please install aptitude via sudo apt-get install aptitude and run sudo aptitude why openssh-client

[ SmokeDetector ] Pattern-matching website in body: The ears regard acting to armada memory by vemejeen on askubuntu.com

@Wally and give me the output.

i   ssh-askpass-gnome Depends openssh-client | ssh (>= 1:1.2pre7-4) | ssh-krb5

@A.B. Hello o/

6:05 AM
@Wally The package is ssh-askpass-gnome. It depends on ssh if openssh-client is removed. ssh is a meta-package and installs ssh-server
Hey @Neil :)

how can I eject this loop device I created by mouting .img file?
loop0 7:0 0 7.4G 1 loop
├─loop0p1 259:2 0 56M 1 loop
└─loop0p2 259:3 0 7.4G 1 loop

I just removed ssh-askpass-gnome and it solved it

@Wally remove the askpass thing.
Ok ^_^ @Wally

@muru done :)
@muru are you busy?
Or I'm ignored...

@A.B. neither.. Just closed the chat tab

@NathanOsman so quick question on the virtual machines . . . .if I copy the virtual hard drive of my Ubuntu 15.10 , for example, could I theoretically use that copy in another computer running virtualbox ?

@Serg Why not?

@A.B. Well, I am sure it's possible, but i am wondering if there's going to be issues with virtualbox versions , or architecture versions ( 32 vs 64 bit ).

@A.B. 50 comments O_O Boy, that's why we need chatrooms . . .among other things, I've found Nathan's question from long long time ago, where he wanted to install dependencies for a package before installing package. Think that would be a good approach in this case ?

@Serg Yes, I asked for a chatroom, twice
OP had 11 reps
@Serg can I have a link?
@Serg A good approach is the conclusion in my answer.

If only I can find it first @A.B.

@Serg No, it's completely different, I think

@Oli Question on intellectual property : how much are the scripts we write here on stack are our own ? I mean, do we loose ownership on them once we post them here ? Is that a better question for meta than for a mod ?

Oli
8:03 AM
@Serg They remain yours (you can sell them under another license, or publish them under another license, or whatever) but you also issue SE Inc a non-revocable license under CC-BY to allow them to do the same.
Obviously if somebody edits it substantially, that complicates who owns it.

Got it, that's pretty much all i needed to know . . . As long as I still can use my stuff , I'm happeh
@Oli thank you !

@Serg Use a (c) notice in all the scripts you post, like here

Oli
A common example where this applies is that you don't have to attribute yourself if you want to post your scripts on your own blog. This used to be unclear but I asked SE to fix it.

@Oli Good one!

Oli
@Fabby I'm not sure that would apply. An "infringer" could defend themselves because the post was available under a CC license. That's why we're so militant against people posting things they don't own. They're illegally sub-licensing somebody else's work.

8:10 AM
Yeah, I add the GPL only for specific scripts to specific answers...

Basically some people were plagiarising other people's work without crediting it, and through Stack claiming it to be their own . . . .a$$holes !

Actually, all my scripts contain it, just in case I need to share.
@Serg Oh, now I see where you're coming from!
Well, that the disadvantage of open source...
Even Microsoft did that a few years ago with the W2K TCP/IP stack!

<.< what ? what ? I'm all about open source, but you have to give credit where it's due ,right ?

(well, one of their employees did)

@Fabby

8:13 AM
@Serg let me google the M$ TCP/IP debacle

How can I change my home directory name?
my terminal is abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:~$
I want the it to be abhishek@abhishek....:~$

@AbhishekBhatia you want to change what shows up in terminal or actually rename the real , home directory ?

rename the home directory
I tried usermod -l newUsername oldUsername

Ah, well . . .  you'd need to do two steps there . . .

usermod: user abhsihek is currently used by process 2350
and when I kill the process my OS shuts down.
@Serg please do tell.

8:16 AM
First, change directory for your user in /etc/passwd

kos
@AbhishekBhatia Despite what you wrote I think you actually want to change the prompt, as your home directory's name is not even showing up in your prompt.

Second , mv $HOME /home/newname

abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:~$ pwd
/home/abhsihek

@AbhishekBhatia are you familiar with command line text editors ?

no
can you explain a bit more

kos
8:18 AM
(morning all BTW)

@AbhishekBhatia as @kos said, are you sure you want to rename directory ? Because what you see in terminal can be easily edited , i mean the text can be changed to watever you want
@kos o/

yeah but I also wanted to change the home directory name as well.
`abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:~$ pwd
/home/abhsihek`

@A.B. @Fabby @kos also , trivial question : what's in demand on AU right now ? I mean, what sort of questions should i start targeting ? ( considering they're relatively easy to pick up )

It should be home/abhishek

@kos o/

8:20 AM
@Serg can you explain more now First, change directory for your user in /etc/passw

kos
@Serg Personally I only tackle those I like. Also I have no idea which would require more attention, maybe ? There are lots of them
@Neil o/

any pointers I kind of confused.

@AbhishekBhatia wait so you want it to be home, not /home , right ? That's . . . kind of impossible . . .because it means home folder is inside root folder . . .

8:24 AM
@Serg I just want to change home/abhsihek to home/abhishek

@A.B. Well . . . I should have expected that to happen, package-manager master ! O_o

kos
@AbhishekBhatia Anyway that has an answer here: askubuntu.com/questions/34074/how-do-i-change-my-username

@AbhishekBhatia Oh . . . .I see . . . change letters . . . .

@A.B. package-manager master sounds like a good name :)

@Serg aptitude is a mighty tool

8:26 AM
@kos I have tried that alreadyr
`usermod -l abhishek abhsihek`
usermod: user abhsihek is currently used by process 2350
and when I kill the process my OS shuts down.
I can't understand the issue :(
and this shows me `abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:/etc$ usermod -d /home/abhishek -m abhishek
usermod: user 'abhishek' does not exist`

kos
@AbhishekBhatia I guess you can't do that if you're logged in with your user, try from the recovery mode (fastest way to log in as root)

how can I do that

@kos is gksu installed by default ? wait . . . he can use pkexec right ?

how to switch to recovery

@kos so pkexec gedit /etc/passwd, edit the entry, and then `mv $HOME /home/newName . . .

kos
8:30 AM
@Serg I'm not really sure but I think the user must not be logged in, so sudo and variants issued from the logged in user won't help

@AbhishekBhatia reboot and hold shift advanced options for Ubuntu > and select a kernel with recovery. is that what you are asking ?

@kos you know what ? It's a good question to ask . . .

kos
@AbhishekBhatia askubuntu.com/a/24024/380067, stop at mount -o rw,remount / (do that though) and then try usermod and all the other stuff

okay let me check
abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:/etc$ sudo mount -o rw,remount /
sudo: unable to resolve host abhishek-sve15118en
^erroR

kos
@AbhishekBhatia Or more easily from another user if you have one you can use. However:

8:34 AM
@AbhishekBhatia host

kos
CAVEATS
       usermod will not allow you to change the name of a user who is logged
       in. You must make certain that the named user is not executing any
       processes when this command is being executed if the user´s numerical
       user ID is being changed. You must change the owner of any crontab
       files manually. You must change the owner of any at jobs manually. You
       must make any changes involving NIS on the NIS server.

@AbhishekBhatia out put cat "/etc/hosts"

kos
@AbhishekBhatia From the recovery mode. See the answer I linked you.

abhsihek@abhishek-sve15118en:/etc$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 abhsihek-SVE15118EN

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
okay i will try.

@AbhishekBhatia "127.0.1.1" ? thats not a loop back adress
@AbhishekBhatia chnage "127.0.1.1 abhsihek-SVE15118EN" to "127.0.0.1 abhsihek-SVE15118EN"

8:38 AM
1:37 AM, this guy <------ should go to bed ,because he has to wake up in 4 hours for work . . .Also . . . -____- I never learn do i ?

@Neil no....
"Some software (e.g., GNOME) expects the system hostname to be resolvable to an IP address with a canonical fully qualified domain name. This is really improper because system hostnames and domain names are two very different things; but there you have it. In order to support that software, it is necessary to ensure that the system hostname can be resolved. Most often this is done by putting a line in /etc/hosts containing some IP address and the system hostname. If your system has a permanent IP address then use that; otherwise use the address 127.0.1.1. "

xieerqi:$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1	localhost
127.0.1.1	eagle

@Rinzwind thanks Learnt something today

It is a hack ;-)

@Rinzwind any suggestions on what I should learn next and target on AU ?

8:42 AM
@Serg have a list of what you already targeted? :=)

why even have this line in hosts file any way "127.0.1.1 ASUS"

@Rinzwind for the most part I do scripting questions, find, awk, grep, bash. My top tag is command line . . .
I wanna learn something new though
Kos suggested wifi . . .I've already put that on my list

hg8
@Serg What is your learning process ? Reading good answers, learn from them, and answer new question on this theme ?

Good morning ! :)

@Serg The "boot process" might be a useful addition. Knowing about that got me out of problems a couple of times.

8:45 AM
@hg8 sort of . . . Also, I've been perusing books on scripting and unix in general . . .and just googling

kos
Luckily there are users such as Pilot6 And chili555 who answer almost only questions, otherwise it would be a jungle of unanswered questions

@hg8 tox ?

@cl-netbox Morning my friend =)

@hg8 no i don't use it

@Neil Too bad I wanted to talk to you

@Neil which ubuntu edition do you use ?

@hg8 that means alot :)
@cl-netbox Xubuntu 14.04

sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://pkg.tox.chat/debian nightly release"

sudo apt-get install qtox

@Neil Yes! Give me your tox id when your are done :)

@cl-netbox @hg8 how do i add you or find you.

@hg8 Good morning and thanks! :)

@ByteCommander Morning ! I suppose not. Also ,what are you celebrating there ?

@ByteCommander is your toxbox broken ?

@cl-netbox is this the ID "46A2D8AB"

9:44 AM
@cl-netbox better now? It was just off...

@ByteCommander Congratulations ! You made it, buddy ! Man, I remember when I hit 10k, I was so happeh !

Yeah, well - what should I do now first? I must check out these new powers!

@Serg thanks for NOT saying this to me yesterday ! =)

@cl-netbox Hehe, I did say . gratz = congrats !
Sorry, I shouldn't have used slang

@Serg AHHH - Nice ! :)

9:50 AM
@Neil The ID was what? =)

@A.B. you what to TOX two ?

@Neil tox, yes =)

Or . . . have I already added ?

LOOOL

I use tox too! Will add you as well (have copied ID already)

9:53 AM
@NEil got it
Oh, the good news from the Anonymous put a smile on my face
And it's 3 am already

@Serg What news?

@ByteCommander btw, have you tried the apparmor thing from yesterday?

@ByteCommander They're massively taking down twitters, working on DDoS'ing sites, getting IPs of some of the terrorists

@Serg GREAT

@A.B. No, I thought it's better to have that confirmed by somebody. Seems to be critical stuff to me...

9:55 AM
@ByteCommander Yes, that's right.

@Serg I could not say that I would not be in favour of this...
@A.B. You didn't post it as answer, did you?
You probably should and wait for comments or give links to the masters of this...

@Neil Did you get my messages ?

@ByteCommander I am much in favor of this. Also, they've been publishing noob-guides to hacking and searching for ISIS related sites and stuff

o.O
Okay...

qtox took forever to start in VM

9:58 AM
But I think it's dangerous for those noobs, as that would be criminal to do and they probably don't know how to protect themselves enough?
