9:02 PM
@HeatherBrown hey, it it works that is a good start
But yeah, looks like it could be shorter

@ParanoidPanda Have you rebooted yet?

user136984
Yes, twice. :)

What's the output of:
gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action

user136984
@Fabby: 'suspend'

and: gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action ?

user136984
9:09 PM
'suspend'

and gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-suspend-with-external-monitor ?

user136984
true

and gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xrandr default-monitors-setup

user136984
'follow-lid'

Hrmpf
OK: now go to a console (not a terminal)
and type:
showkey --scancodes
then close and open the lid.
gimme a minute, I'm going to do the same...
@A.B.: going for a smoke now...
@ParanoidPanda what did you get???

user136984
9:16 PM
@Fabby: Absolutely nothing...

user136984
Except for the code for the Enter button when I pressed it to execute the command... :D

user136984
@Fabby: Should have I got something?

actually, no...
ACPI doesn't sent keycodes...
(apparently)
My machine went to sleep!
:D
OK now type in a terminal (not a console):
acpid --version

@Fabby is it possible to link lid-closing action with pm-suspend command ?

user136984
@Fabby: acpid-2.0.23

9:22 PM
@Serg First we have to diagnose whether he's actually getting an event!
@ParanoidPanda OK, so that's installed!
now type:
pgrep acpid

user136984
465
974

@Serg When someone can't reach a server, the first thing I check is the cable and then work my way up...
@ParanoidPanda huh???
You've got 2 running????

user136984
Apparently so...

What version of Ubuntu are you on???

user136984
15.04

user136984
9:25 PM
And I am running Gnome Shell.

@serg: what's your version?

i've no acpid running whatsoever oO
$ acpid --version
acpid-2.0.21

@Serg are you running as a user or an admin?

That's on 14.04. I'm gonna need to reboot my laptop from win7 to 15.04. sudo user

@Serg You have 15.04 too?
We"ll wait then...

9:27 PM
Yes. I'm working from 14.04 right now, I'll reboot to 15.04 in a minute

@Mateo: what version of Ubuntu are you running?

@hbdgaf yeah, that one is my favourite xD

@Seth Ah! Another Guinea pig!

user136984
:D

@Seth what version of Ubuntu are you running?

9:29 PM
I'm not :(

Oh, poor you! At work?

user136984
@A.B.: Are you around?

My Linux computer is broken, I'm using family members/extras until I can afford a new one :/

@ParanoidPanda No he's not...

@Seth what exactly did you break there ?

user136984
9:30 PM
@Seth: Oh, that is very sad... :(

(or he would have replied to my smoke msg)

user136984
Ah...

user136984
:D

@Serg That's what I was going to ask...
:D

@Serg The motherboard decided the battery doesn't need to be charged anymore.

9:31 PM
@Serg Have you rebooted yet?
@Seth did you buy a new battery?

yes, acpid-2.0.23

It still powers on with the cable, but it's old and the cable is super loose, one bump and it falls out and bam, there goes everything :/
@Fabby It's not the battery, it's the motherboard.

@Seth Ouch!
@Serg pgrep acpid

same - nothing
nill
nada

user136984
@Serg: Are you on a laptop?

9:32 PM
yes

нічого

user136984
So it suspends when you close?

yes

user136984
Strange that you don't have any of them running then...

@ParanoidPanda The problem is that I'm using upstart and you're using SystemD

9:34 PM
um . . . . @paranoidpanda have you installed laptop mode tools ?

That's why I stayed away from 15.04

user136984
@Fabby: SystemV?

Having 2 ACPI Daemons running is not normal...

user136984
I thought it was a B...

ok, ps aux | grep -i power tells me i have upowerd running

9:35 PM
No, it's D SystemV is much longer ago! Sorry!

user136984
Oh, so I was wrong too! :D

I think your problem lies somewhere there (ACPID), but can't help you with any details on how to stop one of the daemons...
could you try killing the second???

user136984
Which is the second?

(and then do another pgrep?)

user136984
Just the second in the list?

9:37 PM
the biggest number???

user136984
What kill signal do you want me to use?

just kill

user136984
The biggest number = 974

and if it's still there a -9

user136984
Is that safe to kill it?

9:38 PM
@ParanoidPanda no, it's not safe!
Use a 10 foot pole to hit enter!

Q: making a private mount

clvxI'm testing shared mounts on ubuntu server 14.04, and I'm having some issues regarding mount propagations. #mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /mnt/tmp/ #mkdir /tmp/foo/ #mount -o bind /mnt/tmp/ /tmp/foo/ #mount -o remount,bind,private /tmp/foo/ #touch /tmp/foo/data #ls -la /mnt/tmp/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 40...

or the daemon might come out of the computer and take you to hell!
or draw a pentagram on the floor using white chalk and keep the computer out of the pentagram and you inside...
If you don't have any white chalk, just use milk...

user136984
Ooh! Sounds fun! :P

so, did you kill it yet???

user136984
No, I couldn't find it...

user136984
9:40 PM
And then I got confused:

huh?

user136984

@Fabby i ran sudo acpid restart , and pgrep acpid, now it has pid there

kill! on the command-line!

user136984
They seem to be sleeping... Are they meant to be?

9:41 PM
@ParanoidPanda Don't think!
Do!
Let me do the thinking!
:P
so you do the pgrep acpid
and then do a: kill iBiggestNumber
and then again: pgrep acpid

huh, now it doesnt work

do you have one number now?
@Serg Don't try do do anything...
this is for our local schizo only: you've got a different config!

@Fabby should be 15.04

@Mateo It's alive! ALIVE!
:D

Huh?

9:44 PM
@Mateo Could you do a pgrep acpid and tell me what you get?
@Mateo Quote from an old Frankenstein movie...
It's what Dr. Frankenstein says when the monster wakes up...

Ah, will take a bit at dinner

look it up on youtube... Very famous to old farts like me...

My suspend only worked on the login screen ,lightdm. When I am logged in - it doesnt. pkill acpid didnt help. Only pm-suspend works. I think I've noticed this issue once I upgraded to 15.04 but disregarded it, because well . . .i only use pm-suspend and not lid

user136984
@Fabby: The smaller one is ktpacpid, and the larger is acpid, are you sure that we should be killing either before we find out from someone else running 15.04 whether they've got them or not? Because what if they are essential and I do something really bad to my machine?

@ParanoidPanda so??? did the daemon consumle you or what???
@ParanoidPanda After you reboot they should be back!

user136984
9:47 PM
The daemon has possessed me, and is telling me not to kill it! :D

What did I tell you about not thinking???

user136984
Ok, well I guess I can always reinstall... :P

No! I wouldn't do such a thing to you!

@ParanoidPanda i don't think reinstall will do it

user136984
bash: kill: (974) - Operation not permitted

9:48 PM
(well, not intentioally, anyway)

user136984
@Serg: Why not?

@ParanoidPanda hold on!
Wait...

@ParanoidPanda like i said, it's probably something about transition from upstart to systemd

user136984
Now you change your mind...? :D

user136984
@Serg: Do you think that it could be a bug?

9:50 PM
@ParanoidPanda Stop thinking and let me think...
;-)

@ParanoidPanda. Can you go to login screen and try to close the lid ?

@ParanoidPanda can you do a ktcacpid --version?

like run sudo service lightdm restart from tty1
and then close the lid once you see login screen appear

user136984
@Serg: Uhm... That's not going to work...

user136984
I don't have lightdm installed...

user136984
9:51 PM
I've got GDM...

well restart gdm then !
What I am experiencing here is that i can suspend on lightdm but not when i am logged in !

user136984
ktcacpid: command not found

user136984
Oh it's ktpacpid...

user136984
Oh...

user136984
Still not working though... ktpacpid: command not found @Fabby

9:52 PM
but it's running?
can you post the output of:
ps -alx | grep --ignore-case acpi

user136984

user136984
It is running...

user136984
And I will just get the output of that command... :)

what does sudo which ktpacpid give?

user136984
> 1 0 67 2 0 -20 0 0 rescue S< ? 0:00 [acp_thermal_pm]
> 1 0 465 2 0 -20 0 0 rescue S< ? 0:00 [ktpacpid]
> 0 0 974 1 20 0 4396 1872 poll_s Ss ? 0:00 /usr/sbin/acpid
> 0 1000 5212 5140 20 0 16140 2176 pipe_w S+ pts/1 0:00 grep --color=auto --ignore-case acpi

9:56 PM
I have that thermal thing too

user136984
@Fabby: No output from that.

smoke brb

@Serg I'm needing one too...
@ParanoidPanda (to think)
So you've got gnome and I've got unity

user136984
Yes

and I've got 14.04 and you've got 15.04

user136984
9:58 PM
Yes...

I can see that acpid doesn't have the same parameters as me, but don't know if that's because of SystemD or if that's the error...

@Fabby could panda be booting with acpi off by any chance ?

OK, try the following:

user136984
@Fabby: Could you maybe put 15.04 in VM and test?

dmesg | grep --ignore-case acpi
