Back. Well, smoking is not a good habbit and I plan to quit eventually. But so far I enjoy the flavors.
Plus it gets my blood rushing , so helps me shake up a bit

Q: logrotate every 2 hours

yayuI'm trying to make httpry logs every 2 hours. I added this to my logrotate.conf file: /var/log/httpry/*.log { rotate 1 weekly create 640 root admin missingok notifempty } I tried changing weekly to hourly (still need every 2 hours), but it doesn't work. I read to copy a scr...

@Serg Nicotine gum?
@Serg Exercise does the same thing, win win there :D

Anybody in apt-get fixing mood today?
Mine makes problems: askubuntu.com/q/656581/367990

Nah, nicotine gum won't be necessary - if I set my mind to quitting , I won't need any nicotine at all. Just have to choose a day and do it. As for exercise, that's a good one ! I've read Eminem replaced his addiction with exercise , so he both lost weight and got rid of addiction. I'm pretty skinny already, 155 pounds, but i wouldn't mind some extra inches on my biceps :)

Indeed. I need to get going again, this family move has been a real troublemaker for exercise space :P

7:14 PM
@ByteCommander try doing sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* and run apt-get update again

Haha. Owned. I wonder what happened

@RPiAwesomeness ouch . . . . I doubt insurance covers that

@Serg Does not work because of contained directories...

I saw some video once that people had made while intentionally crashing their minivan into a pole to try to collect insurance money...They posted it on the internet

7:15 PM
@ByteCommander contained directories ? you mean the "partial" directory ?

Insurance company (somehow) found it

imgur.com/gallery/I8u2G <-- Yeesh...I'm rethinking getting Windows 10...

user136984
@A.B.: This is probably something for you. :)

As long as you delete files there , it should be alright. This trick helped couple of times when apt-get throws errors

7:17 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I've been asked a few times if I've upgraded to Windows 10 and my response so far has been 'Nope, haven't had a reason to boot out of Linux yet :)'

@Serg So I run it recursive (-r switch)?

@ByteCommander no,no,no, no recursive

but what instead?

@quake120 Exactly

just delete the files. You can leave that partial directory alone.
rm: cannot remove ‘/var/lib/apt/lists/partial’: Is a directory
Ignore that

7:19 PM
If I run your command, it blocks, because it finds that directory. :-(
It does not delete any file.

Hmmm, ok . . . Let me think

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*.* maybe?

user136984
@ByteCommander: I've commented on your question by the way. :)

Microsoft can use your bandwidth to do updates peer-to-peer it sounds like... WTH
This is why I use Linux

rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* && rm /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*

7:22 PM
@ByteCommander those files don't have . and extension

They do.

oO

Most have .tar.bz2 or things like that.
No, just .bz2 or .xz

Most of my files are like : us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-updates_universe_source_Sources

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  8294644 Apr 24 20:39 ftp.uni-stuttgart.de_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_binary-i386_Packages.bz2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  3456337 Okt 28  2014 ftp.uni-stuttgart.de_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_i18n_Translation-de.bz2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  4235430 Apr 23 17:50 ftp.uni-stuttgart.de_ubuntu_dists_vivid_main_i18n_Translation-en.bz2
Just a little extract...

7:23 PM
@RPiAwesomeness so they are doing p2p updates?

user139252
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/ && sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists && sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial maybe?

user139252
Are we trying to get rid of all files in a directory?

sudo find /var/lib/apt/lists -type f -name "*" -exec rm {} +

Crap. I need flash don't I.
RIP ME

user139252
7:24 PM
Why not just delete and remake the directory?

@HeatherBrown that's also an alternative

user139252
@RPiAwesomeness Nobody needs flash

@HeatherBrown Well, for youtube I do :P

So why not recursive deleting then?

user139252
@RPiAwesomeness HTML 5?

7:25 PM
That would be the same.

@ByteCommander yes, just do that, sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists and then sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists
not even mkdir

user139252
I'm smart :)

I removed it recursivelly and ran update again

user139252
Oh, not smart. Suggested extra. Stupid me. D=

lists dir created again
with apt-get update

user139252
7:27 PM
Oh, yeah. Makes sense.

Now apt-get update takes a while...
:-( No change.
Still hanging.

still hangs ?

user139252
So, we have this girl subbing for one of our teachers today... She decided to spend her lunch practicing her violin.... Why? :(

@HeatherBrown because she likes music more than teaching ?

user136984
@ByteCommander: Do you get anything like this when trying to do other stuff with APT?

user139252
7:29 PM
@Serg But music is something you practice at home, away from the public, when you haven't been doing it long.

@ByteCommander Ok, which repository it hangs on ?

user136984
Perhaps you should try to reinstall APT.

user139252
sudo apt-get remove apt-get

user136984
Although that may not go well if you try to purge it with itself... :D

@ParanoidPanda sudo apt-get install --reinstall apt-get ? apt-ception !!! :D i don't think that's a good idea tho, probably he has some bad repository

user136984
7:30 PM
@HeatherBrown: It may be a config file problem, so purging would be better than removing I think in this case.

user139252
@ParanoidPanda I know, I was just showing the paradox :D

@Serg No repository. After that!

user136984
@Serg: Yes, is it possible to purge all config files and then recreate them if you are doing is with the reinstall flag?

user139252
Just reinstall Ubuntu.

@HeatherBrown I haven't been good at chinese, but it helped me to get out and practice it with people on my campus. We all need exposure somewhere

7:31 PM
You know how I can capture that status line at the bottom?

@HeatherBrown Make sure you do sudo apt-get install -d --reinstall apt-get prior to sudo apt-get purge apt-get ;)

user139252
PrntScr

It'll download the apt-get package prior to it being purged, 'cause it sure won't work after :P

@ByteCommander can you run apt-get update and just post whatever you have in terminal to paste.ubuntu.com ? Probably won't be that useful, but maybe someone notices something

No, I mean how can I redirect the output to a file including those updating/disappearing infos.

user139252
7:33 PM
command > textfile.txt

No, that does not work.

user139252
Oh.

It only writes to the file what stays visible in the terminal anyway.
I might have to filter out backspace-like characters maybe?
Don't know how that kind of output works...

user139252
Yeah, possibly. I'm not sure entirely how it handles that output..

@ByteCommander so it hangs on random repositories ? not one in particular, right ?

7:36 PM
It hangs after the repositories.

user139252
Let it sit for an hour.

You know how I can record it to a animated gif maybe?
I think you did not get what I mean...

@ByteCommander yes you can record it with byzanz
@ByteCommander so it hangs after the lines :
Fetched 23.0 MB in 1min 47s (213 kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done

No, before that.
After it writes the list of Get/Hit/Ign.
Then there's in the last line dynamic information about what it does.

7:39 PM
Like "100% [Translation_en]" and stuff like that.

Ooo, python. Somebody get Jacob here

user139252
I feel like they could have shortened it down a bit

user136984
@Seth: When submitting a patch you are meant to provide a "regression potential" section, but what does this mean exactly? How can you test, or know what potential regressions there are? What are you meant to put in this section? Are there any guides on this? :)

Where are you reading this?

@ByteCommander how about sudo apt-get check ? That's supposed to be a diagnostic tool for apt-get

user139252
7:47 PM
sudo apt-get panic-mode

user139252
Don't try that, it's not real

No wonder i didn't find that in the man page, which i am reading right now

user139252
Me too, I just like having fun :).

user139252
@ByteCommander So, how long does it hang on that last line? Or is it indefinitely?

user139252
All of the repo's run through without a problem?

7:51 PM
@HeatherBrown hehe, as long as the jokes don't go as far as making someone remove their root directory - that's all nice and dandy :D little bit of fun every once in a while should be good for health . . .maybe . . .

user139252
I promise to never pull a Terdon :p

@Serg No output for "check" except the standard "reading package list... etc"

@HeatherBrown Ooooh, so you know that story

@HeatherBrown It did not continue yet past that line. AT least 15 minutes or so.

user139252
I was around, though my name was a little different.

user139252
7:52 PM
You could try, like I said, letting it run for at least an hour...

user139252
Maybe.

I tried to byzanz-record it, but I can't.
It creates so heavy HDD access that it slows the entire update down to probably 20x the normal time.
Can't I record to RAM and write when finished to disk?
LANG=C byzanz-record --x=40 --y=40 --width=1100 --height=800 -e "sudo apt-get update" out.gif

@Bytecommander ok, there is alternative. Command called script
so run script first like script record.txt, that will record everything you do in terminal

hold on
$ script record.txt
Script started, file is record.txt
You will pass away very quickly.

$ echo hello world
hello world

$ exitScript done, file is record.txt

$ cat record.txt
Script started on Tue 04 Aug 2015 01:54:15 PM MDT
You will pass away very quickly.

$ echo hello world
hello world

$ exit
Script done on Tue 04 Aug 2015 01:54:23 PM MDT

$

user139252
7:55 PM
I don't get that "You will pass away very quickly" bit...

user139252
Are you threatening me?

There is a command like that preinstalled? Cool!

@HeatherBrown I have 'fortune' command in my .mkshrc
it runs on every terminal opening
@ByteCommander surprisingly yes

user139252
@Serg It still does not capture that dynamic line

I wonder if it will capture the dynamic output.
Not?
Damn.

7:57 PM
@ByteCommander what dynamic line are we talking about ?

user139252
I just tried it with a working apt-get update. Nothing showed up. Just the last update on it.

That is what I try to describe to you!

user139252
@Serg the last bit that tells you what it's currently working on.

user139252
Mostly says "waiting for headers"

No, it captures those lines!

user139252
7:58 PM
Mine didn't D=

But it has many ^M symbols in it...
I'm copying to pastebin...

pastebin did that to me too.

user139252

user139252
Pastebin?

>_< i should start learning python somehow , everybody around seems to be using it more and moar

8:03 PM
Gedit crashed when trying to open it...
Had to cat | xsel -ib
You see what I mean now?

I see. Weird

No more ideas?
Can I try reinstalling apt-get with aptitude?
Both depend on apt, but not on each other, I think...

Both depend on dpkg if I'm not mistaken

So you think it's worth a try?

Give me a minute ok ?

8:12 PM
Sure, i'll wait.

Bad idea
$ apt-cache show apt | awk '/Depends/'
apt-cache show apt | awk '/Depends/'
+ awk /Depends/
+ apt-cache show apt
Depends: libapt-pkg4.12 (>= 0.9.16), libc6 (>= 2.15), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1), libstdc++6 (>= 4.6), ubuntu-keyring, gnupg

Depends: libapt-pkg4.12 (>= 0.9.16), libc6 (>= 2.15), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1), libstdc++6 (>= 4.6), ubuntu-keyring, gnupg
libc6 is one of the depends
I suggest sudo apt-get install --reinstall apt
and reboot

apt package provides apt-get?

I did sudo aptitude reinstall apt now and reboot. BRB

Sigh . . . so many fails and so many good moments . . . . and so much trash too -_-' I used to draw and I have like gigabytes of just pictures of other people's drawings that i would just go on google or baidu and binge-save

user136984
8:24 PM
@A.B.: Do you have any ideas about this? :)

Q: Laptop suddenly refusing to suspend on lid close

Paranoid PandaIt was working just fine earlier today, and in fact I have never had a problem with it before, but now when I close the lid of my laptop, nothing happens, when I open it back up again, not even the locked screen do I get... Although when I close the lid it does blank the screen, but does nothing ...

@ParanoidPanda Try looking into file /etc/systemd/logind.conf and uncomment line #HandleLidSwitch=suspend.

@ParanoidPanda I would love to help you on that one, but Ubuntu won't run on my laptop. Stupid video drivers won't work. :(

8:42 PM
So . . .I'm deleting like whole bunch of software from my win 7 . Kinda feel sad, but it has to be done. My win 7 needs a makeover

user136984
@Serg: Why has that been commented out in the first place? Or is that not what would have changed, but a back up option of some sort?

@ParanoidPanda that was commended in 14.04. Now that you have 15.04 , it runs on systemd. Thus, systemd reads that file and goes "Oh, it's commented out, so I'm not gonna do it." At least that's my theory on how it works. 15.04 really breaks a lot of things with the whole switch to systemd instead of upstart

user136984
@Serg: Ok, I have edited that file, do I have to restart now to apply the changes or something?

I'd say yes

user136984
Ok...

8:44 PM
Report back once rebooted

user136984
Be right back then! :D

@ByteCommander any luck yet ?

user136984
@Serg: Ok, I have restarted, and it still makes no difference... :( Any other ideas?

:/ nope . . . . that's all i got for now

user136984
@Serg: Do you know anyone round here who might? :)

8:56 PM
em . . . no . . .only blind guess that Fabby or A.B. might know . . .

user136984
@Fabby: Do you have any idea about this? :)

user136984
:D

8:58 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'll have a look. Looks like ACPI (first thought)
On a call will look afterwards.

user136984
Ok, thanks! :)
