What to do with this askubuntu.com/questions/360721/… :S
It has some potentially useful information I think, but overall it's pretty icky.

what?

someone itch to use delete votes askubuntu.com/q/196286/169736

@Seth my computer wont boot unless keyboard is plutged in

that's a hardware issue then.
I think I've heard of it.

Q: Please avoid to lengthen existing duplicate chains

guntbertRecent example FInding my IP without using Google tagged as duplicate of Command to know my external IP address? which is itself a duplicate of How can I find my public IP using the terminal? which is a duplicate of Command for determining my public IP?. Apart from the suggestion that mergin...

@basketball thats exactly the situation where GNU screen becomes essential to managing a system (my box is remote)

9:03 PM
@guntbert Good call on the PSA on meta.

@hbdgaf thx :-)

It could be a feature request on MSO to auto-follow chain to root if you're trying to close assuming the system won't let you circular close-vote.

I am not so sure that I want an automatic - but OTH it would maybe be better than such a chain.

I would tend to agree that one dupe might more closely mirror another as opposed to the root question, but close votes should not be the Kevin Bacon game...

unless you are fan of recursion

9:13 PM
whats that game? (english is only my second language)

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is a parlor game based on the "six degrees of separation" concept, which posits that any two people on Earth are six or fewer acquaintance links apart. That idea eventually morphed into this parlor game, wherein movie buffs challenge each other to find the shortest path between an arbitrary actor and venerated Hollywood character actor Kevin Bacon. It rests on the assumption that any individual involved in the Hollywood, California, film industry can be linked through his or her film roles to Kevin Bacon within six steps. The game requires a group of players to tr...

@Braiam, I see :)

BTW: another no repro: askubuntu.com/questions/280859/…
@Braiam: mint?

@guntbert yeah, that's the same impression I have

Q: How to edit to look like code?

SkateguyHow can I make it so this, # The primary network interface auto eth1 iface eth1 inet dhcp looks the same as it appears on the monitor.

9:42 PM
when i plug in speakers it make my computer mute and unmute nonstop causing a poping sound
@guntbert my pc is from 2002 and only has 256 mb of ram and 60 gb of hard drive

@basketball - what desktop are you running on that PC?

@basketball GNU screen doesn't need any Graphics - it is strictly text based - especially useful on servers with no GUI (and only ssh access)

what is it

@Braiam technically you can install cinnamon from ppa on Ubuntu. Not that I ever would or think that makes it on topic. But it is a discussion I'm best off staying away from because of how much I think should stay off-topic to keep the chaff down.
@basketball if you put stereo in a mono jack... or was is the other way around :/ that can happen because the tip and ring don't line up right and it constantly grounds and ungrounds.

9:55 PM
it is a headphone jack

then it's probably just coming unseated from the board or you don't have it quite all the way in so the tip and ring line up (its called tip and ring on phones, I don't know what it's called for speakers...)
either way, read as hardware/gear problem not software problem.

@hbdgaf I'm trying to help him, but if he installed cinnamon and it's using gnome or unity (or something more bizarre) for most that I would try to help I will be unable to

o/ @Nathan
How go things...

Good.

10:04 PM
Any new blobs of interesting or nuggets of wisdom from the great and powerful Oz?
^that was a compliment ;)

Not really at this point.
I'm digging into QML at the moment.

Well it's certainly interesting. I gave it a relatively cursory look, and it's interesting that QML is so JS like and they effectively made a C++ to JS bridge.

It isn't rendering correctly in VirtualBox with 3D acceleration.
I'll try it with 3D acceleration turned off.

Lots of things don't work exactly right in Virtualbox with 3D. There's a question on site about that actually...

I know what the problem is too.
The version of Qt5 bundled in Trusty is from July last year.
This was actually fixed but the Qt5 version in the archives is so old.

10:10 PM
how can i set up a second router in my room

I remember something crossing the Ubuntu-phone mailing list about it too... just saying.

<basketball> ok i have my router and modem in the office
<basketball> but i have a extra router is there a way to hook it up where i can have second router in my room on same modem and same network

I can develop for Ubuntu Touch on Windows thanks to VirtualBox and Xming:

10:28 PM
@basketball The wireless bridge is a separate piece of equipment, or the router has to support it. Easier to just run a cable from the uplink of router B to a host port of router A. Or make buying decisions based on router features instead of buying a router then asking how.

@NathanOsman that's awesome!

do both routers have to

@NathanOsman I've been thinking about trying out Komodo-edit since the code completion on Sublime is a little weak.

asus router rt-n66u

@hbdgaf Komodo Edit is pretty good.
@hbdgaf You should also check atom.io out

10:30 PM
It works quite well with Python in particular.

@hbdgaf could i use a ethernet switch

I have one invite for atom.io left if someone needs it.
It's Mac-only though at the moment.

I really like Sublime, but I also like stronger code completion as long as it doesn't come with the "Holy GOD" lag that came along with trying to open the metasploit source tree in netbeans with the ruby plug-ins...
@NathanOsman I no can haz Mac...

Me neither, so :P
It also requires 10.8 or later, so no old Macs either.
According to the FAQ:
> "Windows and Linux releases are on the roadmap."

@NathanOsman That'd be cool! I didn't sign up for one.
oh wait, Mac only? nvm.

10:32 PM
Yeah, I know :(

There's an upgrade path for the old free iAtkos if you're in the - maybe I should run that so I can compile for Mac/iOS mode...

Goes back to writing QML...

@NathanOsman Where are you learning your QML from?

^ That's a fair question. There is a distinct lack of examples for most recent... although I saw some for older qml.

Nokia pulled all theirs afaik.

10:35 PM
Nothing fancy but it's a start.

oh, I know about that :-/

can i connect a ethernet switch to router wirelessly

There are some cool tutorials on youtube, (which I'm trying to watch) but the guy is a bit long winded

Yeah, the nokia site had some qml1 tuts, but some of the changes in qml2 broke all the tutorials and most of them aren't updated...

10:38 PM
Nokia, I just... ugh...
They almost killed Qt but thankfully Digia was able to grab it.
And it helped that BlackBerry jumped on board.

Yeah... I thought for a while about trying to port the examples by reading the manual + trial and error, but I didn't think it was a valid ROI argument.
remember when that random guy opened a question about porting the qml guitar tuner example to qml 2 and all he did was change the import statement (or whatever it was) and nothing else... and said something to the tune of I tried porting it and it's broken. fix it for me. ?

Someone wrote a guitar tuner app?
Goes and crosses that off the list of cool Ubuntu Touch apps to make...

It only worked for QML1 so you still have dibs if you port it to QML2.
unless they updated it, it's still too old for utouch qt-project.org/doc/qt-4.8/demos-mobile-guitartuner.html

A: Why are vote buttons on Stack Exchange shown when they can't be used?

Joel SpolskyHave you ever spend 30 minutes searching for a user interface element or menu item that you knew must certainly be there, only to eventually learn that it had disappeared completely because you were in some state where it couldn't be used? Imagine that you don't know that you can't vote for your...

awesome

Nice answer...
I totally thought I had voted on something on UX before... evidently not
@NathanOsman speaking of utouch, have you tried it recently? is the image they're deploying now more functional and less of a UI scaffold now?

10:55 PM
I can't get it to run in my VM.
It starts up but the screen stays blank.

I got a Nexus7r1 with the express intention of writing utouch apps, but the image left me disappointed, and I haven't touched it since developer preview due to my initial disappointment.
And then the r2 came out and it broke all the things... so my hole got a little deeper.

:/

Hi --- is there anyone with experience on chromebooks? This user can't manage to have the kernels header for his running kernel, and I am running out of ideas... see askubuntu.com/questions/431437/…
I have the same tablet and it works ok for me after compiling the recent drivers.

11:12 PM
the part "apt-get update" didn't work makes me suspicious. it has to update and upgrade to get on a supported kernel and rebuild the drivers. update not working makes it a non-starter

He did apt-get install update which is a bit wrong.
I added a comment, let's see...

There's too much oops in there for me. You need to apt-get update. I did apt-get install update. It just makes me ignore the question altogether. It's like someone playing with the site, so I go blank when I see it.
Needs the hammer askubuntu.com/questions/434407/… 6.10 is SOOO off-topic

@hbdgaf 40 minutes
> If this is the case (I'm assuming its is) what are my options?
> Upgrade your system

There are no humans running 6.10... really, there aren't.

I think I was still with Mandrake (or it was even before?)

11:22 PM
It was 8 years ago. I was on FreeBSD, Fedora, and Windows...

Well, could be worst. I have my first Linux somewhere --- a slackware from 1990. On floppies. Archeolinux.se?

1999 my friend David showed me quake running windowed on his BSD box. I was hooked when I saw superior performance of that magnitude. And so, I was introduced to IRC... but times change and I didn't know enough smart people to stay interested all by myself. Then after a gap you come back to things you like.
@Braiam I'm guessing he's trying to run a windows binary as a service on an NTFS disk with permissions issues. Contrived problem for the:
I need a shirt that says: "Are people really this stupid? Or do I just get consistently trolled..."
oh and i missed that the paren wasn't escaped in whatever command line tried to run it...

morning ladies, gentlemen, and anyone I wouldn't accuse of being human.

11:40 PM
@Braiam question title force me to put close vote .

@JourneymanGeek thanks for... the greeting ;P

@Braiam it's not a duplicate. it's no repro if anything.
I voted as no repro to silence it...
4 other people didn't read the question

@hbdgaf and that's why we got review audits...
btw, reopening...

go for it. i think a mod should just edit the close reason though... with a note as to why...
i'm not on board with a reopen. i am on board with an edit of close reason
it really baffles me when you see such a win cast as a fail: cdn7.staztic.com/app/a/391/391551/…

11:50 PM
removing the 31st line from /etc/profile will solves his problem. :-)

@AvinashRaj you have to read the body of the question too...

even if, and that's a strong if, a linux binary was located in progra~1 it would be horribly contrived...

what can you do with a supercomputer

Q: ISP broadcasting all IP-packets, so I can see traffic of other clients from ISP

user3297416Recently I wondered why my router shows a constant downstream of 5 MBit/s, while I am downloading almost no data. I discovered the "packet logging" function of my router, with which I was able to log all the traffic in the wireshark format. And I recognized that 80% of the downstream traffic was ...

@Seth ...
Y U STILL WITH DAT' ISP?

11:58 PM
@Seth The answer is incorrect. You can see downstream on cable if you have the right gear. It's shared circuit.

Interesting.
