Q: Ubuntu won't boot

Bridget BowersMy laptop ran out of power and when I went to plug it in and power it on, Ubuntu no longer boots. I get directed to BusyBox built in shell that looks exactly like: BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu4.1) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help'for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) When I...

am I the only one that has like 5-10 AU tabs open at once and then you go through them a few days later and you can't remember why any of them are open
was this a problem I had? a question to answer? was there a moderation thing going on here?

@Seth while not for AU
that happens to me
don't forget the additional tabs for research

oh right, research too. haha
at least it's not just me hahaha

@Rinzwind One of those phenomena's I'll never understand.

I'll have random txt docs with snippet ideas for code and they'll pile up over time
It gets confusing

^ That's why I answer questions on AU. It's my database of snippets.

...with a search function, couldn't be better.

I've been floating around AU but haven't really been answering recently

Q: Laptop cannot detect specific Wi-Fi network

luceoscuraMy laptop cannot connect to the WiFi network of the café I used to work. The problem arose when I still had Ubuntu 18.04, I recently installed Debian 9 but the problem persists. Actually, the WiFi's name does not even appear in the NetworkManager (not even as a hidden network).

Q: could not insert 'ip_tables': Operation not permitted

bluetackI used the Ubuntu 16.04 system and had problems configuring iptables. How to solve this problem? modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'ip_tables': Operation not permitted iptables v1.6.0: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or you...

Is there much point mentioning ESM when one encounters a question about an EOL LTS? Is there any clarity on what is meant by $150 per year for desktops with a minimum order of 50 units? So is it $150 for 50 units or $150 per unit? And then there's "$2,500 cart minimum applies". See buy.ubuntu.com.

@DKBose no., and it is per unit.

Q: AskUbuntu background flicker

Jakub FojtikWhen scrolling a page on askubuntu, the background dots flicker visually. It is a minor thing but the fix is so simple, just to set: background-attachment: fixed When i do it manually in the browser it looks perfect. Why is background not fixed on askubuntu?

Q: Alt-tab window list displays Android virtual devices as "Unknown"

PetroCliffI'm running multiple Android virtual devices at the same time. Although all of them have proper names in AVD Manager, on Alt-Tab list all of them are displayed as "Unknown". 6:31 PM
@Rinzwind Why???

I am thinking he actually used sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi {wifi_driver_name} :P

Last line clarifies that: he used wlan0

but rmmod does not take a 2nd argument :P

Yeah, so that's what's confusing me...

@Fabby he's got a realtek >:)

6:38 PM
:D :D :D
People following instructions blindly...
@Rinzwind The whole "I have an Intel processor so I installed I386 instead of AMD64"7

sigh
yeah
I have 8Gb hard disk. NOOOOOOOOOO 8Gb MEMORY
yes that's what I said.
really?

Is it me or are users much dumber nowadays than 20 years ago?

20 years ago computers where a luxury. either you was rich and dumb or smart of got 1 from work and you knew what to do

@Rinzwind Mostly the opposite: I have 1TB memory...

Heard that one too yea.
Followed by "is that a lot"? D:
well see me there complaining
I cant get bloody BT to work on my system :(

6:43 PM
@Rinzwind Although when I say that the largest server I ever installed had 8TB of memory I actually mean RAM...

lol

@Rinzwind What's not working? Too new system? No drivers moduies?

everything is fine except is finds nothing

Sorry man: If you're stumped, I'm likely to be stumped too.

ah well. the headset came with a jack in + cable too ;-)

@Fabby do you really meant 125/27=8? ;)

A: Bluetooth not working in Ubuntu 16.04 with [0cf3:3004] Atheros adapter

Pilot6This problem exists because Atheros re-used the chip VID and PID. See this bug report As a workaround you can patch the btusb.c module and change it from ath3k to Rome. I've built a DKMS package to fix this issue and uploaded it to my PPA. https://launchpad.net/~hanipouspilot/+archive/ubuntu/...

6:55 PM
yeah saw that too :P

@dessert 215.
Rinzwind has 215K rep, I have 27K.

@Fabby ah, I figured

@dessert that's just proof of his statement ;)
@Fabby one thing got me stumped.

indeed

rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$ lsmod | grep btusb
btusb 49152 0
btrtl 20480 1 btusb
btbcm 16384 1 btusb
btintel 24576 1 btusb
bluetooth 557056 41 btrtl,btintel,btbcm,bnep,btusb,rfcomm
rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$ lsmod | grep ath3k
rinzwind@schijfwereld:~$
I am SURE ath3k was in there yesterday :P

chip died?

hmm :P

rfkill?

back., new attempt
nope all it finds is the controller.

@dessert na I am way beyond that >:)
added it ...
$ lsmod | grep ath3k
ath3k 24576 0
bluetooth 557056 42 btrtl,btintel,btbcm,bnep,ath3k,btusb,rfcomm

still nothing ;P
ah well
serves me right for getting an atheros

@Rinzwind ok – it’s just that the bt on one of my machines regularly seizes to function, and then it’s often miraculously softblocked or softblocking and unblocking it helps :)

the "scan on" would tell me if it was blocked ;)

7:10 PM
it would indeed

@Fabby 5.5 already :+)

Q: dd copied UUID - How to make GRUB2 find the correct partition?

dmanUsing Grub2 on Ubuntu LTS Xenial On sda1, I dd the partition to sdb1(which already has GRUB2 on the MBR) with sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M. I found that it also copied the UUID. Q: Ubuntu - Can't execute binaries unless they reside in /var/lib/php/sessions/

bashbinI noticed this weird issue in a Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) box and a couple of other Debian-based systems -- I will take statically linked netcat binary (a unix networking tool) for the sake of demonstration, however the result is the same for any other ELF executable. @UbuntuQuestionsonU&L It should be impossible for /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 to have the same UUID. That said use a different method of cloning other than dd or Clonezilla: askubuntu.com/a/1064000/307523
