Hello all.
I was hoping if someone may be able to assist me. I'm wanting to gain a deeper understanding of consoles.

7:27 AM
@Motivated Do you mean the command line in general or a shell?
I really like the No Starch Press books: linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
of course there’s also a codecadamy course: codecademy.com/learn/learn-the-command-line

Q: Two Linux distro on one USB stick

Andrew-at-TWI know everyone on the web says use multibootusb to install a multi Linux distro on USB. But it seems like it's installing live version. Since when you're installing normal Linux, you'll first burn iso to one stick and then go through the installation process to install a full version Linux to an...

@dessert - No, i mean consoles, terminals, PTY, PTS, etc. I have attempted to read most if not all the posts and it hasn't been all that clear to me.

@Motivated does this post help at all?

8:38 AM
@Zanna - It's one of the very first posts i read. It may be helpful to have a chat if anyone is open and supportive of it.

Do people bash random commandson keyboards and expect to get intelligible results?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1108094/installation-issue-of-psql-in-ubuntu

I'm flabbergasted by such approaches to computing...

7:51 PM
Computers are supposed to know what you are thinking and not what you are typing...... Geez! =)

@Terrance and it's of course urgent.

Exactly!

Also, pelase don't post images of text. Instead, copy the text directly into your question and use the formatting tools to format it as code. That way, we can actually read it easily (that's tiny and we need to open in a new window), we can copy the commands and try them, and you don't show your email address to everyone... — terdon ♦ 10 secs ago
I wonder how many emails the OP will get... I am half inclined to send them that Bart Simpson blackboard image with "I will not show my email address when posting on the internet".

Only half...?

I tend to skip over questions when they post that it is Urgent. It honestly makes me want to work slower.

yep

It also makes it sound like we are responsible for helping them get their problem fixed.

Well, at least since they removed the Canonical top bar, we don't get as many (any?) people who think we work for Canonical and treat us as though we're the professional tech support.

Here here!
I am so tired of people thinking that.
Under this deleted one askubuntu.com/questions/1107869/… I wrote my thoughts as a comment to it, but tried to keep it as civil as possible.

@Terrance If people have urgent needs at work I get a urgent need for coffee...

those who try with a carrot instead of a stick however...

8:16 PM
@vidarlo LOL! I need to start doing that! :)

Oddly enough, I have spent more hours than I care to admit playing civ6 on Linux...

@Terrance Had a user that had an URGENT NEED for an VM a while back, so I said it would be three hours to configure... oh well, he didn't need it before easter

I need to start playing more games on Linux. =) But then again, it would help if I was a gamer, even though I used to work for a game studio a long time ago.

Games? Oh, you're talking about OpenTTD? :D

games are fun :)

8:25 PM
Oh, I had not seen that one before. I think I had heard about it. I might have to check it out

OpenTTD's kinda addictive
I start playing it, and suddenly the calendar advances by an month

LOL

start on a 2048x2048 map, with a goal of connecting everything :D

@vidarlo Did you get the VM done in time? Unfortunately in my job when they say it is Urgent, I have to move it to the top of all other jobs.

@Terrance I have two kinds of urgent. Those with a PO, and those without a PO.

8:33 PM
Ah
Similar for mine. Without is generally an outage. With means a 24 hour turn around.

Q: Separate programs - Remain at their designated monitor

was woken at the hotel once by the CEO of a client. Early in the morning, with a ferry out of traffic and a government official arriving later that day...
that was somewhat urgent :D

9:16 PM
Sounds urgent to me. :)

@vidarlo Starred! Although I don't drink cofffee, I'm going to use that from now on.
@vidarlo gzdoom: lots of free maps out there...

@Fabby You drink beer? Tea? Water? Coke? I'm sure it works as well.

@vidarlo All of the above.
I'm using Rum and Coke already when people bother me on a Friday-evening...

haha
That's fridays three o clock... have a beer before anyone calls :D

Huh? What??? One moment... Aaargh... I needed to finish my rum & Coke. Now, how can I help you???
@vidarlo I have the record at EMC for procuring, deploying, quality assurance and RTP of a VNX.
9 calendar days...

9:23 PM
haha

Reaction of the Operations director:
I only said a week because I wanted it done in a couple of weeks instead of a month
My reaction to that:
You owe me three weeks of me drinking beers and you paying
(I got a gold or platinum award for that one)

lol

Hi, can anyone help me with installing Ubuntu on a Usb drive?
I have two sticks, one with the ubuntu-livesystem and I want to install it on another usb drive.

@zebleckDAMM Yup. Possible: just do it, BUT:

I have tried so many different setups but nothing seems to work.

9:29 PM
ensure your machine is in BIOS mode when installing and when booting it on another PC otherwise it won't boot on any other PCs
@zebleckDAMM install for one PC or many?

Im trying to install on my surface laptop which is in uefi mode
one pc

@zebleckDAMM Change to BIOS
otherwise, the boot manager will still go onto your HDD or worse: NVRAM.

do you know how?

Welcome to the wonderfult world of UEFI

Q: Trouble in last stage of Ubuntu instalment

Ryan MarrPrior to this I got a message about cdrom needing to be unmounted not sure if this is related to stop. This is the screen that will show for hours without anything being done. I can copy and paste the text from the screenshot if it is useful. https://imgur.com/a/5wexBUK

9:31 PM
i think i can only access uefi on my laptop, not bios

@zebleckDAMM Ah, RTFM the laptop manual or ask on SuperUser unless you have an Acer Predator, which is what I have.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

he doesnt change into bios in that guide or did i overlook somethign?

@zebleckDAMM Do you have an Acer Predator?

no, microsoft surface

9:33 PM
also hes partitioning the hard disk in the guide, i would want ubuntu on an usb

@zebleckDAMM a USB is just another hard disk.
(Partition it too, like in the guide)
@vidarlo sudo apt install openttd I'll have a look over the weekend!
Thanks for the tip!!!

ok I think I have followed this guide before and after it just booted into windows.. but ill try again..

@fabby get latest from their website

also dont you ahve to create like a /boot/efi partition for this to work? he doesnt in the guide

@vidarlo mmmh... Looking for PPA now.

9:39 PM
@fabby if you want to join network games you generally need the newest client, and that's where the fun is. I have one network game going @ ttd.bitsex.no :P

@zebleckDAMM Not if you change to BIOS. Please re-read my comments from the top...

@fabby get from the website, no installation needed, extract targz and run from directory

@vidarlo I generally don't like network games: I want a game to be relaxing, not competitive...

it's not... competetive. But it's fun to see what others build =)

@vidarlo Lemme try the old version locally first.

9:40 PM
hehe
you can play coop as well

If I get addicted, I'll contact you and connect to your server...
SMOKE! BRB...

what do you mean "change to bios"?

@zebleckDAMM Change the UEFI firmware boot mode to BIOS mode
(aka "legacy boot" and a host of other things)
Like I said: I don't have a Microsoft Surface and it's vendor-dependent.

cant legacy boot on surface

@zebleckDAMM Then you cannot install to USB only.
The boot manager will always reside on your UEFI partition.
You cans till install Ubuntu on the USB stick, bit not GRUB as otherwise it won't be able to boot.
Like I said: welcome to the wonderful world of UEFI
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

9:48 PM
"The boot manager will always reside on your UEFI partition." can you explain this further?

Can I post a question about VFIO here? I have my boot screen infront of me and it's frozen on a vfio call.
Shit, mobile I'm sorry.

@sxbrentxs Programming VFIO?
better here: stackoverflow.com

I'm running Linux Mint, and I figured this is a good place to as- No, I'm trying to install PCI-Passthrough.
I'll fetch the tutorial link I'm following, be right back.

@sxbrentxs Linux Mint is totally off-topic here, but on topic there

9:55 PM
Posting a question is better then? The chat rooms there are dead, that's why I came here. Sorry, and thank you.

@sxbrentxs Always best to post a question: we're a Q&A site, not a chat help site... ;-)

@zebleckDAMM However, here is the Question and Answer site: askubuntu.com/questions/ask
