Fixed it by booting with a Live usb, then reconfigured /etc/fstab UUID to match the 188... ID reported. Now can boot into ubuntu, however graphics seems stuffed up haha can't recongise multiple monitors and resolution is wrecked :')

1:35 AM
oops :/

Can not get UFW to open a custom TCP port
$ sudo ufw allow 6666/tcp
$ sudo ufw disable
$ sudo ufw enable
$ netstat -l
tcp 0 0 *:6666 *:* LISTEN
what else am I missing?

what're you trying to access that port with

1:53 AM
an internal applicaiton
@ThomasWard znc

don't run ZNC on 6666

Ok, I can run it on any port just my ufw is not allowing me to telnet to it

and that's not what i was asking, my question was what are you using to get to port 6666 on the target machine (if it's an IRCd you're connecting to, that's one thing, but if you're connecting to ZNC with port 6666 Chrome, Firefox, etc. are all going to complain and yell because it's not a 'web-safe port')
can you telnet to it from that box itself?

Yes, $ telnet 127.0.0.1 6666 works
@ThomasWard I'm testing with telnet but will use an IRC client like LimeChat
I had it working once with iptables but everytime it restarted I had to re-add it.

well that's because you have to install iptables-persistent and save rules to /etc/iptables/rules.v4 so they are autoreloaded on boot every time
:P
UFW is weird
because it has some additional rules and such that aren't exposed to the end user

2:01 AM
Oh good point. Should I $ sudo apt-get remove iptables-persistent?

you should probably stick to either iptables or ufw and not try and mix and match.
do me a favor, sudo iptables-save. Copy-paste the output here or into a pastebin. paste.ubuntu.com works.
I personally prefer iptables because reasons but meh
i do some pretty advanced stuff on my systems too so... can't do that with ufw ;)

ah UFW hasn't added the rule it looks like heh

Isn't it on line 147?

ah yep you're right my bad (I'm really tired)
TBH all that extra cruft ufw adds makes interpreting these firewall rules difficult heh

2:15 AM
Yeah can't I reset it and start over?
@ThomasWard or what can I do to set it up right?

do you want to use UFW or no?
that's question #1 AND determines what my answer is :)

Whatever works
and permanent ;)

anything other than 6666 you also want to accept?
i'm lazy and don't want to read through ufw ;)

2:31 AM
well the standards
22, 53, 80, 443,
53 is outgoing dns

that won't be restricted by my rules i'm writing up
i don't restrict outgoing, typically.
and only need to accept port 53 UDP if I"m running a DNS server.
start by removing ufw. Then keep iptables-persistent installed.
put this into /etc/iptables/rules.v4:
# Generated by iptables-save v1.6.0 on Fri Jan 19 20:03:58 2018
*security
:INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
COMMIT
# Completed on Fri Jan 19 20:03:58 2018
# Generated by iptables-save v1.6.0 on Fri Jan 19 20:03:58 2018
*raw
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
COMMIT
# Completed on Fri Jan 19 20:03:58 2018
# Generated by iptables-save v1.6.0 on Fri Jan 19 20:03:58 2018
*nat
:PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
:INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:POSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
run sudo iptables-restore < /etc/iptables/rules.v4
try that and see if that helps.

Delete everything that's there and replace?

if you want to keep a copy: sudo mv /etc/iptables/rules.v4 /etc/iptables/rules.v4.backup
that way you can then create a 'new' set of rules but have a backup version

@ThomasWard You're a genius!
How can I make sure they stay on reboot?

2:54 AM
they'll load up automatically from /etc/iptables/rules.v4 during the boot cycle, assuming you also remove ufw from the system or disable it in systemd. Assuming you keep iptables-persistent installed.

I did thanks so much

you're welcome.

3:12 AM
@Conor let me know if you have any questions about the rules, too, i'm happy to explain :)
otherwise, enjoy.

Q: No IP Address on eno1

DanielI'm sad to say that although there are a ton of questions about no IP addresses, I can't seem to find a resolution to my specific scenario. I'm hoping that with a few technical details, someone can point this windows guy where he is going wrong. Problem: No IP address on new ethernet PCI-x card...

Q: Naming, and other differences between Canonical's USN pages, and CVE tracker pages

UberhumusI have a question that I don't know if I'm supposed to post it in Ask Ubuntu as it is mostly about Canonical's websites. The question follows: I ran a vulnerability detection scan on some Ubuntu servers. In the scan results I saw references to both: https://usn.ubuntu.com/usn/ and https://peop...

Hello, I am have Ubuntu server enabled on a dualboot setup. Once installed I can get into Ubuntu server just fine, but then I try to enable my wifi adapter and after that when I restart I ubuntu stalls and just sits there on a black screen. If click the reset button my tower then all of a sudden ubuntu can move forward but that point the computer is resetting and so it goes away...
Any ideas?

"$myArg" or ${myArg} --- which one will you say is more common and maybe a "best practice"? Thanks,

@Arcticooling both
it depends what you're trying to do
(there's also the hybrid of "${myArg}" too)

Yes
Hmm,
I desire to expand a variable in a command:
for dir in "$drt"/html/*/;
for dir in "$drt"/*/;
Also this: alias drt="cd $drt"
alias drt="cd $drt/"
Sorry and sorry

Does anyone know if SMART tests work by default with SSDs on 17.10 (they're not supported on 16.04, at least with my SSD)?
Or maybe NVMe support.
Oh, never mind. NVMe support is added in smartmontools 6.5, and that's in 17.10.

Q: What are the limits for answer and question lengths?

Sergiy KolodyazhnyyWhat are the limits to which answers and questions can be pushed ? Ubuntu-based, but UI is different. My indicators still work there though. I was contacted by a guy from Deepin testing team who had an issue with my Udisks indicator. Turns out he was using an outdated version of it
